View Full Version : Building a plane around a 2.5cc engine

Hi there, I'm new.

I have an old 2.5cc (.15ci) diesel that was my dad's, and I'd like to build a plane around it. I've built gliders from scratch before, but I've never gone near engines so far. I know the engine starts - I clamped it to a bench and got it going. My questions are: Is it even possible to sensibly do R/C with an engine as small as this? Can anyone recommend me a good design to start with and let me know where I might get hold of it, bearing in mind I'm a novice at powered flight?.

Thanks very much indeed.
David.

You say it is a .15 Diesel. Does it have a throttle? I do not remember many diesels that did.

As it is an older engine you may want to look at some of the old timer free flight models that are now flown as RC assist models. They are some of the most attractive models ever built and extremly easy to fly.

An older modeler I know flies them from a chair and we have more than once had to wake him to get ready to land.

I believe the AMA magazine has an ad for a company that still produces them.

I took a moment and looking out on the net found this address for old timer kits.

They show quite a few old kits that could be made rudder elevator with the new small RC recievers and servos.

As to building a small gas RC model this is a .10 size PT 19 that weighs 29 oz flown by Bob Somers in Maryland. I modeled it into an electric using a speed 450 size outrunner that weighs 23 oz.

It is an excellent flyier in gas or electric.
