Best Paint Competition – April 2007

Please read carefully!!

The Best Paint competition will be open for entries for the first 3 weeks of the month and will close at Midnight (EST) on Saturday, April 21st, 2007. At that time I will create a poll which will last for 7 days. Each forum member can vote once for a body in each class. Please vote in all 3, not just the pro. The member receiving the most votes at the end of 7 days will be declared the winner. When voting, please take into account the design, the difficulty, and the execution of each body.

Restrictions: Themed (Like a sponsor car, but without numbers. This can be existing companies, made up companies, sports teams, cartoons, video games, TV shows, etc. No pretty abstract designs!) Please post what the theme is if it is not obvious.
(See accompanying thread for this year’s schedule.)

The best paint competition is an opportunity for people to express their unbounded imaginations on an R/C car body. Realism is not required. Let your imagination loose on a piece of plastic to create a work of art.

RULES for Best Paint competitions:

1) Any body may be submitted to the competition (Truck, buggy, touring car, etc).
2) Any body submitted may NOT appear in another RCZone Paint Competition.
3) Photo editing the pictures (other than cropping and adjusting brightness/contrast) is highly looked down upon and may result in disqualification.
4) Anyone may enter a body (professional painters and Modelers are welcome!)
5) Insulting entries or painters in any way will not be tolerated.
6) Restrictions: Themed.
7) A maximum of 3 entries per person.
8) Recommended 3 photos per entry are submitted.
9) Cars must be painted within the last 6 months.
10) Imagination is key and fun is a requirement.

Each submission must include the following:
Body and chassis manufacturer and size.
Paint used.
Masks used (hand or precut)
Class entered

Failure to follow the rules or failure to submit the required information will result in a disqualification.

Classes of entry:

Pro – This class is for those of us who are truly the professionals, the guys who are sought out for their exceptional skill. If you make a sizeable yearly income from airbrushing car bodies or anything else, regardless if it is your full time job or not. If you paint a few bodies a month for local guys at the track or sell to a few people through the net you fall into the Intermediate class. If any one person wins 2 Intermediate class competitions they are moved up to the Pro class and people who have previously won 2 Pro classes are required to be in this level. I want this pro class to gather the best talent around to build their reputation (and customer base) and show off their skills.

Intermediate – If you paint or have painted for money, you must enter into the Intermediate class. If you have won 2 contests in the amateur category, you are automatically moved up to the intermediate class. If you’ve been painting for years (not for money) and people look at your work and say, “how’d you do that” or "holy crap, that’s awesome!”, then you belong in this category. This shouldn't be a guessing game.

Amateur – This class is designed for beginning to slightly below intermediate painters. If you have been painting RC bodies for several years and people ask you “how’d you do that” or “holy crap, that’s awesome! Do one for me”, then you don’t belong in this class. 90% of rattle can users qualify for this category. If you are confused, the masses will speak out and place you accordingly. Be honest with yourself and to your fellow painters.

Things to think about when voting:

1) Design: How well does the design fit/flow on the body? Is it visually appealing? How are the color choices? Originality does not count, but naturally something that every painter has done will not score as high as something unique and new.

2) Execution: Regardless of how complex or difficult it is, how well is it executed? Are there paint bleeds? Are the lines straight (or correctly curved)? Are their obvious mistakes? Fingerprints in the paint or paint bleeds? How well executed are the fades and other basic painting techniques? etc.

3) Difficulty: How hard was this body to paint? Is it one color? Is the entire thing 5mm checkers with 4 different colors in each square? Are the mask lines through difficult areas of the body (i.e., wing mounts or stadium truck beds)? It may be 2 colors, but is one marbled? Is one color a candy that requires a special backing technique? This is where experience as a painter helps the most.

If contestants have problems, discrepancies, or disagreements with the competitions or other participants, contact Mab_man20 via PM. Do not post in this thread, it will be deleted.

Viewers of this competition are encouraged to keep their comments to a minimum. Negative, derogatory, or inflammatory comments will not be tolerated. If a contestant makes the aforementioned comments, their entry will be disqualified. Additionally, they will not be permitted to enter the contests for a period not to exceed three months.

Let's show off your talents and above all, have fun. Let the competition begin!!

I have a feeling that this one will be a train wreck (now that I said that, I challenge everyone to prove me wrong).

I have a feeling that this one will be a train wreck (now that I said that, I challenge everyone to prove me wrong).

Let me extend the list of ideas:

Dragons
sports
nature

Basically I want to force people away from the abstract design and have people come up with something more than some spikes, flames, and tribal.

Intermediate, at a minimum. Those may be only the 3rd and 4th CARS you've painted, but that skill has been honed on some other artform before you got into painting on lexan, fer sure.

Very nice details, and welcome to the forums!

Well, my background?
I'm just student and I like painting. I bought my first airbrush a few years ago. I don't do (airbrush) it for living, I do it for fun. :) I haven't sell any rc-bodies.
I paint for my self... Some friends has asked me to paint their bikes, helmets, sellphones etc. Sometimes I've done it, but not for money, just because I wanted to. :D

Buggyracer thats reallynice, very clean looking,

but not to be rude, isnt the Intermediate class meant for good painters who dont paint for money? im still not clear on this, because you said it was for a customer so....

davec-nitro-rs4

Intermediate – If you paint or have painted for money, you must enter into the Intermediate class. This shouldn't be a guessing game.

You know you're a PRO when:

Everybody knows your work - Like Nemo.
A Factory team guy runs your bodies.
Your work has been on the cover of a magazine.
Your leadtime on a body is 8 weeks or more becasue you have 30 bodies waiting to be done.
Your average body sells for more than $50.

If you are 17 years old, paint for your hobby pocket money, get 7-8 paying paintjobs a year, you aren't a PRO, in my book anyway.

Any young person/student etc is generally not a PRO painter. Czech is an exception to that. I saw in buggyracers profile that he is roughly 17....

he could be a pro at 17......even though it ant his or hers main sorce of income, hey you got talent, you got talent ya know!if your r a pro painter n you know you r gonna wipe the floor of the intermitette class,y waste your time just go pro!

lol its not that big of a deal.. I put it in the intermediate class because there are obvious flaws that would not hold up at all in the pro class, and it was not a pro paintjob, so i put it in intermediate.

[QUOTE=CarbonMadness]Not everyone knows who Nemo is (sadly it's true). :(

Nemo's the fish, Duh! JK

I like the quality of the bodies on here even if the volume isn't high. Keep up the good work everyone.

My vote goes for DaveC's Bears/superbowl body.

Colors look great and the bears and superbowl logos are awesome. Being a bears fan helps too.:)

Thanks. I may have one for next month, if I decide to enter again. April's just doesn't seem very fair. Unlike what is stated in the poll, I did follow the theme.

Don't take it personal. FESTER, may not be the best painter, but he is a realy good person, and he shines through like no other on this board.

I understand, and I am sure he is a great guy. I just think it should still be fair though. It's not a personality contest. If it was, he would probably win for sure.
