View Full Version : Details regarding speed trap?
Hi,
I’d like to enter the contest but would like to know how the speed going to be measured. I know there will be a speed trap, but I’d like to know more details. How will it be arranged?
Where will the speed trap be located?
What is the spacing between the sensors?
How accurate is the speed trap?
Thanks!

Hi prc,
This year RCCA has contacted our drag race organization with a request to utilize our timing system in conjunction with their radar guns.
Our system has sensors spaced 10' apart to determine trap speed. The mph is calculated from the time it takes the car to travel between the 2 sets of beams.......just like NHRA. The accuracy is .01 mph. For additional information, and a sample of our time slips visit www.socalmhra.com . Our system also measures elapsed times for the 132' scale 1/4 mile, but of course this would not be used during the speed record runs.
Hope this answers your question.

Hey Jim!
Congrats on the 104 mph run.
Absolutely phenominal. :)

Hi Jim,
Thanks for the info!
Do you know where on the track the speedtrap will be located? How many passes, two-way or one-way, and how much prep time between runs?

I imagine the traps will be somewhere near the end of the full scale 1/4 mile to allow up to 1300' in which to accelerate. You will be able to start closer of course.
Last year the sponsors allowed us to run as often as we wished. Just get in line & be ready to go.......rather informal but it worked well.
Don't know about 2 way passes as the speed traps would need to be turned around.....and moved back down the track too.
It will be fun for sure. Bring shade if you can.....we were lucky to have cool weather last year. It's usually very hot in July in Fontana.
Thanks Mod Man.....I was very nervous to run in front of all those people, especially considering the track was just temporary (and slippery).
See you guys in July.

Rainman - am I correct in believing you're using a Dp3000 timing system?
If thats the case and you'd rather not use a PC Trackmate has a standalone speed trap system that uses the same DP3000 beam boxes and can output the speed to an LED signboard.
