Hi Clarence, how are you? I have e-mailed you before about a Cox .049 engine problem and your advice worked out great! I read with interest your Febuary 2007 article about the RJL .049 heads that would accept standard glow plugs. And you're right! I can't find glow heads anywhere. I plan to buy an RJL head ASAP, but I have two quick questions before I do:

1. I use a Black Widow .049 (newer model, with plastic tank and backplate/carb), should I use the head that takes a long reach or short reach?

2. Should I use a cold, medium, or hot glow plug?

I guess I should also input that I use 15% nitro fuel.

Thanks for any help,
J.

Dear J.,

The 1/2A size engines seem to work best with short reach glowplugs. With 15% nitro fuel, you should use a hot heat range plug. Actually, the 1/2A engines work a lot better with 25%.

Clarence Lee

As Cox fuel is not available anymore I would recommend you contact Sig and purchase their fuel for the Cox engines. As far as I know they are the only supplier of high nitro fuel that is 100 percent caster based.

The Cox engines do not have a reputation of lasting long on sythetic oils.

Hello Clarence,
I've been racing an LA 15 in a delta wing this past year and the high nitro spins these the best, good for 800+rpm.Problem being is I can't get fuel with enough oil content. One or two guys have found Byron 33% and added oil, but don't explain what oil or how ? Cold you or would enlighten me? I do know the hih nitro shortens engine life but if you can spin these LA's at 17/18000, (With a modifies 7.5x4 apc prop)then you can't keep up with the pack .We can't modify the engine and any add ons has to be stock OS parts, But no rules on fuel,,so far,,LoL

PS I did very well I though as this was my first year Pilon racing, placed 5th over all for the year out of 65 racers...I would like to chase the front runners next season.
