I've follow this column for many years, however, at 58 I never really expected to be a participant.

I have a plumbing question. I’ve acquired a YS 2 stroke engine and it hasn’t been run for a long time. The needle side has YS 45 FS on it and the carb has a square butterfly instead of the more common rotating barrel. The head is the older style round top and it is dark grey or black. There is not a fuel nipple on the carb but there are two nipples on the crank shaft housing and something that appears to be a small pump or diaphragm on the bottom of the same housing.

It has what I’m assuming is a tuned muffler mounted on it with a pressure nipple at the header. I also have a standard YS muffler but it has no pressure nipple.

If one of the nipples (which one) is a fuel inlet, what does the other one do?

Thanks in advance for any information you can provide.

T.

Dear T,

Your YS 45 FS uses a pressurized fuel delivery system. The unit on the bottom of the crankcase is a pressure regulator. The forward nipple connects to the fuel tank pick up line. The second nipple connects to the tank vent tube. A one-way valve must be used in the pressure line. If you use the tuned pipe, the pressure nipple on the pipe is not used.

If you want a copy of the operating instructions that came with the engine send me $2.50 and a self addressed, stamped envelope. See my add in the Classified section for business address.

Yours,

Clarence Lee
