I’m new to glow engines most of my experience is with electrical power systems. Just bought my first Saito 4 stroke 125a and installed it on Hanger 9 P40 60 size Warhawk. It's got spine tingling vertical performance just as Gen Saito promised. But I've had a couple of dead sticks.

My question is can you constantly supply the glow plug with voltage while the plane is flying. This seems to make sense to my electrical background. I figure you would get less flame outs at idle and lower RPM’s if you had an on board cell providing voltage to the glow plug on a continuous basis.

Is there any downside to doing this ??

Would the glow plug burn out ?? if so why ??

Thanks

they make on-board glow drivers that you can mix with your throttle if you have a computer radio so that it only comes on at lower throttle settings. This way, it's not on all the time, but if you drop the throttle down to say about 1/3, it comes and keeps the dead sticks away. There are several brands out there, but none come to mind right now.

About the glow driver,I just put one in my sig rascal with a 52 4 stroke, seems to work good comes on at idle and goes off at quarter throttle, its also adjustable so you can set it how you like, its also good because you dont need an igniter.Tower hobbies sells them its called Jomar glow driver EM00037GD-Futaba J, www.emsjomar.com

I would have someone at your club who is familiar with Saitos check your engine. It may not have enough time on it (broken in) to have the needles set correctly. The low needle may need to be adjusted or your tank placement may need to be changed. Does the engine die when the fuel in the tank is at the same level? or when the plane is inverted? You may have a pinhole in your fuel line or clunk line.
You shouldn't need an onboard glow to solve this problem. It adds weight and will affect you planes performance.
Have a Saito or engine guru look over your set up and hopefully you will find and solve this problem without have to go to on-board glow.
