Best Paint Competition – June 2007
Please read carefully!!
The Best Paint competition will be open for entries for the first 3 weeks of the month and will close at Midnight (EST) on June 21st, 2007. At that time I will create a poll which will last for 7 days. Each forum member can vote once for a body in each class. Please vote in all 3, not just the pro. The member receiving the most votes at the end of 7 days will be declared the winner. When voting, please take into account the design, the difficulty, and the execution of each body.
Restrictions: None
(See accompanying thread for this year’s schedule.)
The best paint competition is an opportunity for people to express their unbounded imaginations on an R/C car body. Realism is not required. Let your imagination loose on a piece of plastic to create a work of art.
RULES for Best Paint competitions:
1) Any body may be submitted to the competition (Truck, buggy, touring car, etc).
2) Any body submitted may NOT appear in another RCZone Paint Competition.
3) Photo editing the pictures (other than cropping and adjusting brightness/contrast) is highly looked down upon and may result in disqualification.
4) Anyone may enter a body (professional painters and Modelers are welcome!)
5) Insulting entries or painters in any way will not be tolerated.
6) Restrictions: None
7) A maximum of 3 entries per person.
8) Recommended 3 photos per entry are submitted.
9) Cars must be painted within the last 6 months.
10) Imagination is key and fun is a requirement.
Each submission must include the following:
Body and chassis manufacturer and size.
Paint used.
Masks used (hand or precut)
Class entered
Failure to follow the rules or failure to submit the required information will result in a disqualification.
Classes of entry:
Pro – This class is for those of us who are truly the professionals, the guys who are sought out for their exceptional skill. If you make a sizeable yearly income from airbrushing car bodies or anything else, regardless if it is your full time job or not. If you paint a few bodies a month for local guys at the track or sell to a few people through the net you fall into the Intermediate class. If any one person wins 2 Intermediate class competitions they are moved up to the Pro class and people who have previously won 2 Pro classes are required to be in this level. I want this pro class to gather the best talent around to build their reputation (and customer base) and show off their skills.
Intermediate – If you paint or have painted for money, you must enter into the Intermediate class. If you have won 2 contests in the amateur category, you are automatically moved up to the intermediate class. If you’ve been painting for years (not for money) and people look at your work and say, “how’d you do that” or "holy crap, that’s awesome!”, then you belong in this category. This shouldn't be a guessing game.
Amateur – This class is designed for beginning to slightly below intermediate painters. If you have been painting RC bodies for several years and people ask you “how’d you do that” or “holy crap, that’s awesome! Do one for me”, then you don’t belong in this class. 90% of rattle can users qualify for this category. If you are confused, the masses will speak out and place you accordingly. Be honest with yourself and to your fellow painters.
Things to think about when voting:
1) Design: How well does the design fit/flow on the body? Is it visually appealing? How are the color choices? Originality does not count, but naturally something that every painter has done will not score as high as something unique and new.
2) Execution: Regardless of how complex or difficult it is, how well is it executed? Are there paint bleeds? Are the lines straight (or correctly curved)? Are their obvious mistakes? Fingerprints in the paint or paint bleeds? How well executed are the fades and other basic painting techniques? etc.
3) Difficulty: How hard was this body to paint? Is it one color? Is the entire thing 5mm checkers with 4 different colors in each square? Are the mask lines through difficult areas of the body (i.e., wing mounts or stadium truck beds)? It may be 2 colors, but is one marbled? Is one color a candy that requires a special backing technique? This is where experience as a painter helps the most.
If contestants have problems, discrepancies, or disagreements with the competitions or other participants, contact Mab_man20 via PM. Do not post in this thread, it will be deleted.
Viewers of this competition are encouraged to keep their comments to a minimum. Negative, derogatory, or inflammatory comments will not be tolerated. If a contestant makes the aforementioned comments, their entry will be disqualified. Additionally, they will not be permitted to enter the contests for a period not to exceed three months.
Let's show off your talents and above all, have fun. Let the competition begin!!

that is your first body?! Holy cow is that awesome, and I really think you have gobs of skill if you can paint a body like that right off the bat. Most people take years and lots of practice to reach that level (im not even close to there yet). Great job man, and good luck with the comp.

Just a little advice on the Liquid Mask, put it on heavy because if not it's a bear to peel up.They say 2 heavy coats but I would lean towards 3 because I used 2 and it didn't work to good and it required a bit of flash clean up after pulling it up.The Chrome is the newest paint job they surprised Dennis Anderson with on the 25th Anniversary Grave Digger that debuted in Vegas. The chrome really is some cool stuff.

Ok I call this one take 2. This body came brand new and painted with my used Losi 8ight I bought and it looked pretty bad so I stripped it with EZ Off and started over. This is my first attempt at using liquid mask and I really enjoyed it...other than the fact that the bottle of Fasmask that I used looked like it was from the 90s. it was a little chunky but it worked good enough. I have a brand new 16oz bottle being shipped to my house right now. Sorry the car looks like poop right now I will try to clean it up a bit and take more pics soon. Enjoy!

On the Mustang GTR I went for a color scheme that just seemed to "fit". I didn't want to do anything crazy or unreal because its not something you would see on a real car. I LOVE doing the crazy stuff like the joker face (really cool) but that just wouldn't fit with what I was going for. Kind of like the old mustang that won last month, simplicity with beauty.

I love custom mixxing faskolor, it always turns out nice. A few days ago I made my own faskolor blue that I am awaiting use. It consists of fasescent blue, silver, faschange blue, a little black, and a TINY bit of fasgold. It looks like a deep blue that is VERY metallic with a little color change to it.

"This class is for those of us who are truly the professionals, the guys who are sought out for their exceptional skill. If you make a sizeable yearly income from airbrushing car bodies or anything else, regardless if it is your full time job or not. If you paint a few bodies a month for local guys at the track or sell to a few people through the net you fall into the Intermediate class. If he is truely that good and wins 2 contests (consecutive or not) the class rules will require him to bump up to the pro class.

I agree but with bodies that are as good as his are and how he has a website devoted to selling his bodies, he should be a pro. It gives the other intermediate runners little chance at winning when a "should be pro" is in the intermediate. I bet the others in the intermediate class including me, have put HOURS of work into a body only to lose to a "deranked" painter.
I don't have anything against him, I love his bodies, but I think it would be fair to everyone if he was in the pro class.

From the point of regulations, I fit intermediate class as hell ;) I have no idea when the contestand may become PRO, so please don't treat me as someone unfair. If you want me to belong to PRO class, I will, that;s not a problem for me. I will treat it all as a kind of flattery. I thought I am not as good as ADRCRACING even in one percent!

Not many pros are as good as ADRCRACING. Believe me, your good enough to create some tough competition in that class. We arn't bashing you about anything, we just wanted to give the other intermediate entries a little better chance. I guess thats a good problem to have : )

Wrobcio: I commend you on taking the leap to the pro class. Its a tough step to make. However, the way your bodies have been looking recently you would probably be forced to move up in the very near future. (Im calling PaulO right now for you to find what the deal on the prize is)
Everyone else: Lets not get too over zealous and send all the good intermedate guys to pro. If a painter is good and wins a competition by a huge margin over some other quality bodies then the process can be expedited. Keep the great work coming, only a few more days to get them in this month.

I use rubber non-skid drawer lining from Walmart.
Here's an example of what I've done with it:
http://rc.jeffjassky.com/temp/Car%20Bodies/Hyper%207%20Crowd%20Pleazer_files/IMG_1653.jpg
There are several different types. I'm using the flat rubber kind and NOT the fluffy foam kind.

Next time I go there I will note what it is and let you guys know. The wonderliner is very similar to what I have but I believe slightly different.

Class: Intermediate
Body: JCONCEPTS Revo body
Paint: FASKOLOR- Fasescent blue, Pearl Silver, Black
Mask: Hand cut-MasterMask
Pictures: Use pics #1,2 and 3
This is a body I did in about 1 hour. A friend of mine wants a Revo body for himself and one for his dad since they both have Revos. The father will be getting his shortly because I havn't finished that one yet. Nothing really special even though the body turned out really nice, the pictures don't show the true sparkle of the colors. Think Metallic blue, near chrome silver, and the plain gloss black. Everything is free hand cut.
The colors and design are on customers strict request.
I never thought it would turn out this well in only 1 hour of work.

Guys, there are some awesome bodies in this month's contest. Too bad so many of them are not mounted on a chassis because I would put them in Readers' Rides. So, if you want to be considered for Readers' Rides mount those bodies!!!
PS: Great paint work guys!!!

Ian,
No, I am not talking about just the pro bodies, but all the bodies. Not sure if you have seen a recent issue of Radio Control Car Action or not, but every month in Readers' Rides I feature one of the bodies from this Best Paint Competition. But all of you who participate on this online competition should also email me directly so they can be picked for Readers' Rides. You car might not be shown under the Best Paint heading in Readers' Rides, but it can very well be in the regular section of Readers' Rides. Just make sure the body is mounted, the pictures are as high res as possible, you include you complete name and mailing address and include a brief description of the vehicle.

You have to understand that most custom painters are doing the shells for customers, and don't have the actual trucks or cars the shells are going on. Why not feature some of the better shells in the paint section of the magazine, unmounted?

I totally understand that some of you guys paint these bodies for customers and you might not have the actual car or truck to mount the body on, but it does not have to be on the correct vehicle. Or you can even fake it with having the body sitting on blocks of wood and placing mounted tires in the wheel wells (That is as long as it is not obvious that it is faked). As far as showing the bodies without a chassis in the magazine, it just looks odd. Putting a body on a chassis is not a big deal, you don't have to drill holes for the body mounts and you have the option of faking it as I mentioned. All I am saying is if you want to be selected, mount the body!!!

Sorry, but I read the other mags first (I just can't stand it when the downgrade the mag to cheaper paper, and expect you to pay the same price (but I still read RCCA, I just don't subscribe to it)).
Also I don't know how you can say the others are "second rate" as every mag is just as informational as the rest of them (it's also a good thing, as you get to read what other people thing about a car ;) )
Also don’t reply to this post, as we don’t need an argument about what mag is better, when they are all equal (it becomes an opinion based to which one you like more, as RCCA, XRC, and RCC all have very good writers and knowledge about RC cars).

Let's just wrap this convo up with saying this (since this is a Paint forum)- carbon, I completely agree with you (what I was saying was sarcasm), and I have a lot of respect for what other mags do. I do, however, feel like RC Car Action is the mothership and is simply the best of the best.
