Overview
The Mini-Slider is an amazing detailed scale model of a full scale dirt oval sprint car. Featuring a longer chassis than the Mini-T or Mini-Baja, the Mini-Slider is designed with unique handling characteristics while sharing many performance and upgradeability features from other Losi Minis. The 4-piece body with headers, street tires, chromed wheels and realistic roll cage configuration all add to the look that parallels the real thing. There is no other vehicle quite like it on the market today and it’s only available from Losi.
The Mini-Slider comes completely ready-to-run with the Losi DSM radio system for crystal and interference free precision-control at all times. This vehicle also offers coil over, oil filled shock for better handling for oval racing or everyday bashing. The functional top wing is completely adjustable and removable to suit the needs of the driver. Whether it is dirt or asphalt, the street/dirt oval tires mounted on chromed wheels give the Mini-Slider the right amount of traction for a variety of surface condition.

NICE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! They just built a new dirt oval at my local track, and I can't wait to get one or two or three or four of these things out there. Whether you like dirt oval or not you have to give it to Losi for thinking outside the box in a very "me-too" world.

I ran my touring car based Late Model on the new oval and it was a lot of fun. I could see that class taking off and these new sprints. Besides being cool, they're inexpensive and almost every hobby store will stock them. Any hobby store can now have fun racing on a 10'x15' slab of dusty pavement.

Dirt oval is EXPLODING in popularity in the midwest it seems. We have several tracks now whereas a couple race seasons ago, there wasn't one to be seen within several hundred miles. Now there's like 3 within a weekend racers' driving distance.

Can't say oval racing is big around here at all...but this is a sweet little rig. I wouldn't mind seeing a 1/10 version since it'd probably be easier to control, and that's always a good thing when people are trying to learn something new...but the advantage of the smaller size is that you don't need nearly as much real estate to set up a track.

This thing does look KEWL!!!
Have to admit though that reading the title I thought Losi was coming out with a 4wd Mini TC Drifter!hehehe ;)
rccardude04
06-08-2007, 07:43 PM
1/10 would have made more sense, because around here we have lots of dirt oval 1/10 scale size. The 1/18 stuff is kinda limited to 4wd rc18 vehicles.
Maybe it's not as popular around the country as it is here. Perhaps we'll start a trend for once! :D

The only thing I'm worried about is how fragile this thing is. The Mini-T was notorious for breaking in an instant. The Mini Slider is basically Mini-T front and rear ends with a stretched chassis and a rollcage (from what I can tell). I look forward to seeing how this little guy takes off

Would gyros or whatever they are called (drift assist?) be a good match for these little cars then?
It would certainly add to the realism if racers could manage controlled drifts during races....something I only saw in 4wd classes when my old track raced oval. The 2wd drive classes were always obviously lacking in control when things went sideways.

It's really cool to see the industry finally embrace the dirtoval scene. It's the largest form of motorsports in the US.
I hope that industry does something in the 1/10 or 1/8 scale. More exposure to this kind of racing will do nothing but make it grow.

I agree about the 1/10th scale. The 1/18th thing seems like a bit of a gimmick. I realize it's not just losi who's doing the whole 1/18th thing.. but it just seems like a fad. I can't see 1/18th being around anywhere near as much in 5 years. They seem impractical unless you just want to drive a nicely designed car around your studio apartment, or get one for your 6 year old as a starter car. Otherwise, they just seem silly to me :).. maybe that's just me.
Anyway, looks very in-capable from the photos.. I don't see the point :)
Looks pretty cool with the body on, though! I just wish they would produce some more race-quality stuff instead of these silly drifters and mini toys. But - I guess the market is speaking for itself and I'm probably a minority.
Bring out a more capable, 1/10th off-road oval car and you'll have my vote!

I'm not sure whether I like it or hate it.
I like the DSM technology but that transmitter looks a little low end, even for me. I'm still on FM and looking to upgrade, but going from a digital screen and buttons to a DSM radio with trim knobs is kind of going backwards.
I'm not a big fan of oval, but I do like the roll cage on this thing. It could be the starting point of a basher buggy project for me.
Oh ya, those shocks in the pictures look like stock mini-T shocks (not oil dampers). Not sure if the error is in the picture or the list of features, or maybe it's just me.
Here we have had off road tracks closing and ovals come in. At the indoor bull ring I race at the absolute track record is held by an Assoc 18T mamba lipo combo, very fast. This Losi car will be readily accepted I believe. Videos are on www.dirtoval.com under Electric Dirt Oval.

I think 1/18th as been around long enough to be past the gimmick stage.
Sure it can't compare to 10th scale and 8th scale but there is a place for it for sure!
From the vids on youtube it looks pretty capable!

Well, they are both sprint cars. The CW is 1/10th scale, the Losi is 1/18th. Quite a gap in price also. The CW has been around for a long time and is a very nice piece.

the only differance between this and the mini t is this thing is longer and has a rollcage theres no real differance. still it looks preaty cool.
Look at an exploded view, quite a number of differences. Not even the same battery configuration.
4DMNYC
06-21-2007, 12:30 PM
It's different enough to be considered a new car.
I really like this one because you can possibly use some of the mini-t hop ups. And again, because of it's size people can get some dirt oval racing started anywhere. I already have one on order at my LHS.
Georgerm
06-21-2007, 02:08 PM
okay there are some differences like the better electronics and different battery configuration but it the front and rear are identical to the mini t.

I like many others are not going to spend that amount of money for a kit where as we can spend 160-180 for a RTR Mini and the mini scene is big. ive seen 179 so far but i expect certain retailers to have different prices

I bet you could do a lot with it. It looks like a dune buggy in that last picture with only the roll cage on. If you fabricated a rear wing and put it on, you'd have a realistic Mini-T based dune buggy with better handling!
This is the first oval offering from a large mainstream RC company in a long time. It is signifigant. A lot of people in my area have left offroad because of the costs involved in competitive 1/8th racing. Myself, I will never go back to it. Too expensive for me, and the number of "big races" has all but killed the club scene. For small oval tracks this little car makes a lot of sense.

The hobby shop in my area has a small indoor carpet track, this little sprint car will be just the thing for indoor winter racing!
JeffEmbracedDC
06-27-2007, 01:41 AM
meh..with all of that plastic it looks like a walmart toy with the body off.. the $299 msrp seems way high.
I think Losi needs to really relax on the "mini" and "micro" stuff. It's nice to have options like the minis, but I think offering the Micro-t, Micro-b, Mini Baja, Mini-T Pro, Mini-t, Mini LST and Mini LS2T are REALLY enough to satisfy the need for minis. I guess the market will speak for itself eventually. I can't see this thing being anywhere near as popular as the Mini-T or the rc18 series.
The radio gear is nice, but nothing about this kit says "racing" to me. And what's the point of a dirt oval car if you don't race? Sure, it's cool by itself. But when compared to the rest of team Losi's lineup it really seems lame in comparison especially considering the sheer number of available options for mini car chassis at this point. Just my opinion. I won't be getting one.

I've never been into dirt oval racing... I lived in Syracuse NY for 12 years and there is a place called Walt's Hobby that had an awesome indoor oval track.... and before that I DID try oval at a smaller, more local track called The Fastlane... but I could never really get into it.... staggering the shocks and wheels... going around in circles... the expense (they started getting as pricey as other forms of racing at the time.) But I must admit... these things look pretty cool... and they just finished a dirt oval track at Sun Valley Speedway where I race 1/5 motorcycles (huge newly paved onroad track) and 1/8 buggy (huge off-road track)... I was running my ARX540 dirt bike on the oval, and I can see where oval racing (when you're actually doing it vs. watching it) can be a lot of fun....
I might try one of these as they are setting up to have an oval race series soon
and yes $299 MSRP does sound high but you seem to be forgetting that street prices are, more often than not, about half of MSRP... so we're looking at $150-$179 street... which isn't too bad if someone wants to just jump in and try it
edit***
Looks like they're already racing them... didn't know they were even out yet

Got mine yesterday...I'll second what Matt said. The car is a blast to drive! I've just driven it on asphalt for now, but it hooks up good through the dust in the street (that's probably just the big honkin' wing). It has decent speed for a mini with the stock battery, but it seems to be geared for speed. The motor seems to take a little bit to wind up.

A friend of mine picked one of these up the other day. They are really amazing little cars. We spent some time with the stock electronics, and it is really pretty quick for stock. After droping in a 2100mah 2-cell, the little thing came alive! That was all it took for us to go brushless. I picked one up today and dropped a 5400kv mamba w/ a 2-cell 1650mah. With a 13 tooth pinion, and a little playing with the suspension set up, the car is amazing on coated asphalt.
We did, by the end of the night end up with a 14 tooth, and 3-cell 1900mah pack. If you have a big asphalt track to run on, definately do the 3 cell, there is still complete control, without the anoying spins and wheelies the mini-t is plauged with(thanks to the huge adjustable wing) The wing, by the way, makes a huge difference when you go through the mounting points.
We tested the snot out of these things tonight, and even with the 40mph sprint car carnage, the cars held up great! (they even crash like sprint cars) We broke one ball end, and lost one screw. Not bad for 5 hours of constant use. Everyone needs one of these things! I want to race with a larger number of cars, and of course, I can't wait for a smooth dirt oval.
sorry for the long reply guys...

beware of driving these with the stock tires on the dirt oval when the track is dry.... I tried mine at Sun Valley, and the track was pretty dry... the stock tires wouldn't hook up at all (it was spin out city)... I'm sure if the god of moisture wished to grant the track some well-needed nourishment, the car would have handled brilliantly... but alas the track was parched... once I moved to the asphalt, the car was GREAT... I'll need to keep some Losi Mini-T rear fuzzies handy for when the track dries out

Bought one two days ago, opened it, charged the battery, I didn't even run it. The next day, yesterday, I entered my first race ever. I pulled out the car, put in the battery, and made a few test runs. the brushes kept sticking in the motor and eventually the ESC died after one battery pack. Because I had already paid to enter the race, and because I was so hyped to drive in my first race, I replace the ESC with a Novak Spy, and applied some "ice" lube to the brushes that another guy next to me in the pits had.
I ended up placing 2nd in the b-main and last in the a-main. I would have done much better in the a-main, but a steering tie rod popped off half-way into the main.
A call to Losi today and they said to just send the ESC in with a copy of the receipt and they will replace it.
I had a blast with this car and driving in my first race. There's a good sized group that races here in Indianapolis at Indy Slots http://www.indyslots.com about 20 guys (and a few gals) race every Sunday. It's an indoor track. A lot of good guys there willing to help anyone.
It is a very tweakable car.

the biggest issue with the motors are the brush shunts are too short and hang in the hood after they wear a little. Many have done like slot cars and snipped the shunts off just leaving a tail to pull brush out. Most of the current goes through the hood anyway and these things don`t draw that much.
I have 3 of them . One for me and each of my two boys have one. We have run at least 4 weeks worth of racing with these and NO issues. Even brush wear is doing well. GEARING is a big issue with these little motors. 1/10 scale stuff you can run HOT and get away with alot. but these little motors HEAT WILL DESTROY THEM FAST!!. We run a dirt oval of around 115' center line. I gear it at 14tooth vs the stock 17 tooth. Motors after even a full battery pack run( around 8 minutes or so ) is still only between 80 and 90 degrees. I have treid a 16 tooth and it may have a tad more speed at end of straight but is lazier out of the turns and does run warmer.
Many oval racers need to get a clue when it comes to gearing. If you hear the motor still pulling or reving at THE END of the striaght you are geared TOO FAST!!!. Get a smaller pinion it it. Ideally you should be TOPPED OUT no later than 3/4 of the way down the straight. Anyone ever watch of been around REAL dirt oval full sized race cars???? That is how they gear too.
By still accellerating at the END of the striaght the only thing you are doing is OVERSHOOTING the turn. You see when you HEAR the car keep pulling faster the BRAIN does NOT want to let off for the turn or set up for the turn as you THINK you are going faster!
Even YEARS ago when racing off road I would gear my mods with a smaller pinion than most others would. I LET the motor rev out not let it always PULL thus creating heat and destroying your motor.(HEAT is the worst enemy of electricity operated things) If you run the right motor that is designed for RPM this works well. I could almost ALWAYS after a race grab the motor with my BARE HANDS and a TIGHT GRIP and be able to hang on as long as I want where as others you could not hardly touch theirs without getting burned. I rarely got beat and set many track records in my area. Even now in the slider class I have not been beat( although my youngest son who is going to be 12 soon is catching on REAL quick!!!) I have run 50 laps while dodging wrecks and alot of other not so skilled drivers too to make that. many 1/10 scale classes we run are not running more than this. We run the sliders DEAD STOCK except for batt connectors and gearing change( we can adjust suspension just no aftermarket) even have to use LOSI batts etc.
The tires have been hooking well . many 1/10 scale classes we have run foams so it is laying down a nice groove. STILL you need to know how to finace the throttle at times.( something many younger drivers have a hard time doing - it`s not an on -off switch LOL) I use simple green to clean tires with and let them soak for a while and clean off before racing and keeps the tires working well.
The sliders are fun. I do like 1/10 scale more but I wanted to get back into the hobby and race with my boys and this right now was the cheapest way to get back into racing and we are having a blast!!

UPDATE: I lowered it significantly today. The chassis sits only about 3/16" off the floor. I won't have a chance to try it out at the track for a couple weeks.
Something else, I am a little disappointed at how much slop there is in the steering and the front wheels. Anyone have this problem as well?

ya unfortunatly there is alot of slop in many parts on these. I took a small rubber band and doubled it over and wrapped around the two bell cranks and it helps with wandering around from slop. we can`t use after market pats at all in our class so you need to be creative;)

It's amazing how dead this thread is when at the local track near here that the Losi Slider is definitely the highest interest car right now.
So far, I have broken nearly everything except the diff.
shredded tires
burned up ESC
burned up brushes in a single race
front bulkhead
broken shocks
broken turnbuckles
worn out outdrives
steering servo saver
...
And I am still having fun.
I have put in a Mamba 5400k brushless and mini-t shocks.
And now I am getting ready to put foams on the tires.
We run two classes, "under 4 sec" and "over 4 sec." We did just have only a stock class, but a large number of us got tired of replacing motors and brushes, or simply of having a brand-new broken-in motor die in 4 minutes.

What size track are you running. Sounds like you need to regear. if you are tearing up brushes in a single race you are geared to tall. Me and my two boys have raced our sliders for 6 race weeks( 2 heats and a main) and still on original motor and brushes on ALL of them and have only raplace the diff gears. They were not greased well enough out of the box. Otherwise no breakeage. I do have to replace shock oil every week as they leak like fairly bad.
BTW my boys are 12 and 14 and have not run a RC for over 4 years.

The track is 65' x 34' oval. The guys with the best times are running the 16 tooth pinion. Running anything less than that and they are blowing you away on lap times. I tried a 14 tooth gear, but I only ended up with ~48 laps and the other guys were in the upper 50's. The 17 tooth gear is way to high for the track.
A lot of guys go through diffs. It just takes a solid hit from behind and it seems to strip them. That, and front bulkheads seem to be the most common breakage parts. I saw one guy go through 3 in one night. 2 heats and a main.
RE slider stock shocks: The are junk. Most guys have switched to aftermarket mini-t shocks. I just bought the stock mini-t shocks and have had very good luck.

I wish we could run other shocks. Our rules right now only allow BOX STOCK. only changes are battery connectors and can regear and tune the suspension. otherthan that we can`t touch a thing.

We're racing tonight at Indy Slots here in Indianapolis. We race at 7pm, doors open at 5pm. We race every Thursday and Sunday. Sunday's race is at 1pm, doors open around 11am.
It should be pretty wild tonight. A lot of guy bought Mamba brushless systems and foam tires. I am going to compete in the over 4 second class. I was running consistent 4.3s/lap on practice Tuesday.
I also got the sloppy steering mostly ironed out. The screws were loose that connected the two arms together. Tightening them up reduced about 50% of the slop. I wish the tires ran truer on the front. They wobble all over the place.

ya these things are fun but have plenty of areas that could be better. the 3 of mine are not as sloppy as others I have seen. We have 5 more races to the points series then I am putting up all 3 sliders for sale with a BUNCH of new parts and chargers and all the batts. it will be a very good price.
We will run 1/10 next year if we race.
