Anyone thinking of running a mini at Car Action World's Fastest RC Car Challenge?

interested in anyones plans to run a mini and what chassis and electronics they are going to use

dont they use 18ths (i think they are considered minis??" in the WFRCC??

yes, last year an associated driver brought an 18t with a mamba and a 3 cell lipo and almost hit 80

one new thing I would like to see is a micro-t at the challange. I saw a guy with a brushless motor in one on one of the other forums, and it should go pretty fast.

That little car was cool. Once it jumped like 10 feet in the air did a backflip, landed and then kept going.

what was his main problem with the car? I am sure it could have gone faster, but like you said it flipped

ok so im building a car, hopefully i will make it to the event
what i plan on using is an upgraded mini-t with a 3s lipo and a mamba speed control, but i cant decide on a motor
what would be faster, geared correctly, a 8000kv mamba or a 9200kv c4 motor?

fasterthanspeed

If I were you, i would get a lower kv motor, around 5000kv, then run 4s lipo cell.

where do u live about?

GeoVW72

in PA so it would be a long trip, trying to convince parents that it would not be just for the event, we have family in california
also mamba only takes 3cell packs

I know, but it works on 4 cells. just gotta diable the bec.

i am kind of on a budget and i am not exactly trying to set the record, i am just trying to beat the speed that the associated driver reached last year
hey, are the quark speed controls any better than the mamba speed controls

Jayboy

The quarks let you use higher capacity LiPo's than the mamba, so may be better for your application. They are also very programmeable. I have one in my RC18B, and it rocks!
My Quark 33A Universal can support up to 5 cell LiPo...

With a 2wd mini T & 3 to 5 cell lipo, your biggest problems will be;
Flipping under acceleration , Stripping the gears/diff in that transmission & gearing it tall enough.
Solve those, and your golden.

No matter what-----It's a blast!
Pick a motor/ESC/battery that you can use, after the competition.

Hope to see you there.

i guess i will go with a quark 33a and a mamba 8000 and a 3 cell lipo, will higher miliamp make that much of a diffrence in speed

bishop power products has a pretty good sale

now, about ceramics, do they make that much of a difference in speed vs. standard metal ball bearings. the kits i have seen online are all close to $100

fasterthanspeed

Its not worth it, If i remember correctly mod man uses standard baerings. The only place i have them on my cat is the clutchbell, and thats cause those have a high failure rate with the internal parts failing to got it with just ceramic balls in it without retainers.
But u dont need to woryy about that.

Ceramic bearings are good for a couple of extra MPH I found in my RC18B cost wise it's up to you?

The 8000 Mamba is fast on 2s lipo's on 3s lipo's you can gear the 6800 to be just as fast on 4s the 8000 is a torqless heat pump. :(

If you want speed the key is higher voltage and lower kv motors to pull larger pinions.:)

GeoVW72

the biggest problem i forsee is gearing a motor high enough with the transmission to get a high top speed, the guy with the mini last year had i'm guessing around a 1:1 ratio or something close to it. the only way i can think of to get as close to that as possible is to use mini lst gears(50spur,25pinion) an large touring car tires(trinity adapters)

IBJAMMIN

It's not that hard to gear it to run those speeds with stock spurs run the numbers here is a link. The RC18 has the same diff ratio as the TC3 use that and enter the rest of the data and you will get the MPH with various tire sizes and gears.:)

the chassis i am using is a mini-t which has a geared transmission, i have seen several videos of other people with brushless motors gettting them up to about 50, but none of them mention the gear ratio they use

placed order today, 33a quark, 8000kv mamba, 11.1 2000mah thunder power(hope it fits in graphite chassis), and heatsink (bishop power products, thank you for all the help)

did a test run the other day, i would say that i hit about 30 with a 7.2v 1400mah Ni-mh pack on the setting ni-mh normal with touring car tires and conservative gearing(60 spur 15 pinion), speed seemed to pulse, anyone have any idea why, was it timing or something.
Any one have advice on programming a quark 33a?
i have an 11.1 2000mah li-po rated a 12c and 20c burst would li-po normal or extreme be best
have pics next post(if i can figure out how:confused:)
bit of advice, never order from dinball(took them a solid week to dig their head out of their ***** and figure out that the chassis i wanted was not in stock)

Sounds like a kewl setup! Look forward to seeing some pics of it ;)

Sounds like possible cogging? What type of Nimh pack are you using? Like others have stated the 8kv motor does not have a whole lot of torque. And I think both the Quark esc and Mamba esc need really good batteries to work properly.

I say try out the lipo pack and see if the speed pulsing goes away? I would also start off on the lipo normal setting first.

GeoVW72

the speed did not exactly pulse, at full throttle the car slowed down and the speed up
how the heck do you load pics from computer:confused:(have them loaded on computer as jpeg, just don't know how to load it on post)

Also are you going to the comp

Ceramics are not worth the money. They are only effective above 60,000 RPM.

You may be overdriving your high KV motor. I have a 50+ mph mini T that is running a 5800 KV motor on 3S. Yes, you have to get creative with the gearing. But, they are alot of fun. I have spoken to a number of people about minis. They are super innexpensive to setup compared to a 10th scaler. Heck, my motor/ESC combo alone is more expensive than a completely tricked out 18th scaler. ;)

Cost per MPH is best with smaller cars.

ran it with the 11.1 li-po today, don't think i hit full tilt, but it was going fast id say aroun 40 at least i don't have a radar gun(with same gearing)
hopefully i can try the new gearing tommorow(54spur22pinion)
the only problem i am having is the fear of hitting something and the fact that the flatest spot i could find was a semi active parking lot
oh yea, pulsing completly stopped

did a few runs with new gearing
absolutly flies(id say at least 50 maybe 60)
encountered a new problem, car flips over just when i hit full throttel
porbebly is an aero problem, try and fix it
motor was pretty warm and speed control was slightly warm

Mount a wing to the front of ur car. that should keep it down.

GeoVW72
07-23-2007, 11:01 AM
found a solution by accident, the front lower spring retainers on the shocks fell of and after that the front was low and no air got under the chassis
i am trying another body and if that fails i will try a 1/12 body because they seem the most aerodynamic, i know it won't fit perfectly but atleast it will hopefully kep the car on the ground

GeoVW72
07-24-2007, 11:21 PM
ran with new body today, fast as usual
never fliped except for the one time, hit a pebble, very stable and straight
the only problem i have now is stopping the thing
prettty mutch locks up, spins and cartwheels, but the car is built strong
hope it is fast enough, i can always gear it higher
hope to see you at the event

Well I was trying to make it I got my lipo's today and just as I finished getting them in the cars I got a call from work and they need me to come in tomarrow:(

Here is my cars I was going to bring a 5s RC18 and a 3s Scalpel oh well there is always next year?

Good luck

nice looking car
i could not make it to the event:(
my father was too busy to book a flight out there
oh well there is always next year
i will just have to see what speed is achived this year and try and beat it next year

Sorry you couldnt make it to the event, your car looks like it would have done well if you could have handled the low grip and the wall!

Try to get a way to measure the speed and post a time here. I would love to know how fast it goes.

Cheers

what i have been running on so far was a completly unpreped parking lot that had daily traffic, so i don't think traction would have been a problem
to find the top speed i am not exactally sure what to do
radar guns are, for what i have seen $100 which i dont have to spend
does anyone know if the cheap hotwheels one is any good?
i know about the whole 2 lines speed trap, but to get it up to speed and some how have an accurate time seems impossible
