View Full Version : Guess the Speed...............
Hard Case
07-02-2007, 12:24 AM
Just did a test of my 3 cars ----
& this is the video of each of their fastest runs.
What is your guess on each of their speeds?
Each car was recorded with a radar gun & a on-board speedometer.

Holy crap!!
Questions....
What tyres are you running?
Whats the radio gear and is it modified?
Was the IC car 2wd?

I won't dare to guess, but I do think that that third car had the fastest pass. Or maybe I was just awe-inspired by the first two.

OK
good guesses ,,,,,,,:)
The first car went 115mph, (with a Neu 1105 motor!--- thier smallest)

Come on Matt.......work with me.............LOL
The answers are..................
115mph with first car. 12th scale GMS dragster
130mph with a Schumacher Fusion
Both of these had consistent readings with a Venom speed meter.
The Last car we estimate about 150mph. The speed meter actually read 250mph, but that is obviously wrong. It was mounted on a "slave" wheel. I think the way it was mounted caused the discrepancy.
With all this in mind, "How Fast do you think the last car was?"

I am really curious to see how fast you go on a decent prepped and treated track.

So if it clocks in at that speed you predicted for the 3rd run, wouldn't that mean a new record?

The problem with those spedd meters, is that it doesnt take in account for wheel spin, and if u accidentally miscalculated something.

Try and get the 3rd one radar gunned by a cop or somebody who has one.

We were using a radar gun all day... but it was inconsistent. It is also one of those cheap Bushnell radar guns. There is a possibility to have a police officer out there next time.
fasterthanspeed
I like the Venom speed meters. On 2 of the cars they were very consistent. I believe the reason - is How they were mounted.
The right way-- magnet on a disk, passing the sensor in a "sheering" way. With the sensor mounted vertically.
The wrong way--(like on the last car) magnet mounted "flat" on the axle, with the sensor mounted horizontally.
BTW fasterthanspeed, they were mounted on slave wheels.;)
I think next time I will put at two Venom speed meters (mounted correctly, of coarse)

I have had the same experience as Nic regarding the VSM.
They are generally very consistant. Nic and I spoke at length numerous times about this. He is running the VSM in the best possible way, on non driven wheels. So, wheel spin is not possible.
Also, radar guns are not the best option partly because of the small size of our cars. Radar guns will aquire the car, then lose it, then reaquire it, then lose it again, and so on. The VSM is always active. I have even found that wheel spin is detectable when using the VSM on the driven wheels once you get very familiar with your car. I can go out and get run after run at an extremely consistant speed, then I have one run that is about the same top speed, but my VSM shows a huge increase (30 to 40 mph increase) and the tires are very hot after that run. Well, that run was obviously done with alot of wheelspin.
The absolute best way is running it on a non-driven slave wheel, though. ;)

Has anybody tried the Spektrum telemetry system? I am putting one in my car so can see the speed of the car during the run. I will have 4 wheel drive so the lay shaft should not spin unless all 4 wheels are off the ground (Solid axle on the back and one way on the front)
I have also looked at sensors that trigger a timer but they are a bit expensive for an individual, around $1000-$1500.
You said the Schumacher Fusion was 130 but that was the last car in the vid right?
How long was the run up before you got to top speed? I will be doing my run at a drag strip so will have 1/4 mile to run up.

You're on top of it!
Spektrum telemetry system may work. You just need two pick-ups (theoretically)
The Schumacher Fusion was the second car.
The run-up was 1200'

1,320 ft is 1/4 mile so sounds about right for the comp. I saw a pic on Google Earth of the track. Is the comp on the straight section in the middle of the oval?

I haev found that accelleration requires about twice as much distance as braking. So, I would say that about 2000 feet is great for this.

The 1/4 mile drag strip is on the back side of the track by the RR tracks it is not on the speedway.:)

Oh I see hmm wow I can't belive every fast car is electric now they def need to make a class for gas and electric cause its not fair the gas car will never be able to keep up with the new brushless motors

Oh really! I admit its a lot harder to run an IC car at speed and the hardest of all is multiple engine!! This is because an electric motor does what it says on the tin. If it says 2HP thats what you get and its just a matter of shoe horning it into a chassis.
With a nitro engine (.21)the makers claim 2.86 HP but getting this power from the engine requires a PHD in engine tuning. You then need to setup the clutch and gearing. Then try this with 3 different engine and you see why all the speed records are electric.
Well I have a car with 3 .21 engine in and its capable of 150 Mph. Building it is one thing. Setting it up is another and driving it at 150 is yet another... They are not slower just much more complicated.

Just did a test run on July 15th & speeds are picking up a bit........
The Dragster is now at 135mph
& The Fusion is up 141mph

For the Prototype car, I’m still having trouble getting a reading from the Venom speed-meter. This time, I think we my have figured out what the issue is....
****EMF -&- a low voltage receiver pack ****
So the solutions I'm going with are, a lipoly 2-cell receiver pack/with a Novak regulator. Repositioning my reviver so that the wires are not over the motor. & One last thing,,,,,,,,, use a separate battery pack , just for the speed meter.
