That's part of the mechanical speed controller. If I were you I'd invest in a half decent electronic speed controller. You'll notice a bit difference in the smoothness of acceleration and stopping, and the car won't go out of control on you if it gets out of range from your transmitter. 50.00 would get you started.

thanks mate, 50.00 damn... ahh well im sure ill get it sorted
Also when you get rid of the mech speed controller you can get rid of the 4 AA batteries. The electric speed controller "ESC" get's it power from the main pack.
Make sure you look for a ESC that has reverse not all do. Here is a low priced basic one for $35. (http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXD523&P=ML)
This is a really good one but not cheap. Tekin Rebel $85 (http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXKYN6&P=7) I have the older one and it's really good.

Another good one is the Novak XRS. Its got a 15t motor limit, forward and reverse, and novak reliability. As with all esc's, it will be MUCH smoother than any mechanical speed control. Its only $46.99 at tower. http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXGNG5&P=ML

Well the silver part is just a cage over the resistor. That is mainly to keep people from grabbing the resistor which can get very hot. If the car isn't working then it's the resistor that is broken. You might try taking the resistor to an electronics shop and seeing if they have one. They used to be found all over at hobby shops but since electronic speed controllers have become so inexpensive most stopped carrying manual speed controls and parts long ago.
