What are looking to power? 10th scale? 18th scale?
For 1/10th scale, try the Traxxas Velineon or the Mamba 4600.

Novak recently released its 17.5T SS Pro motor. (http://www.shopatron.com/product/part_number=3417/135.0.15996.22023.0.0.0) This motor was specifically designed and tested for beginning users and for inclusion in the BRL racing program and spec ARCOR events featuring brushless motors.
It is slower than the 27T brush stock motors and is rated at 2200Kv (RPM/volt) We had many request for motors slower than the 13.5T and this is the most recent release for those customers.

Some of the manufacturers are using a comparison of their brushless system with a brushed motor - which makes it a little easier when choosing a brushless motor.
It depends if you are going to just bash or be racing on a club level where some type of rules are used. Most of the racing organizations allow the Novak, LRP speed controls, only the Novak or Orion Motors or maybe one type of motor for one or two classes.
Novak seems to have a nice variety of brushless motors for all types of uses, some are inexpensively priced for bashing. The two I used are the 4cell version the 10.5 (19turn class), and the 13.5 (27T Stock). Even in those classes the difference aren't close, the brushless system has been more consistant without the need for maintenance after every run.
