I recently switched from a Futaba 27 mhz AM dinosaur to a Spektrum DX3.0 I like the Spektrum, but the response is slower to the point I am having some issues with control. Sure the delay is not much, but when you add it to my already mediocre reaction time, OOPS! After messing around with settings and linkage, and having other drivers try it, we came to the conclusion that a faster steering servo will help ALOT. My 15+ year old Futaba FPS131SH is a good servo, but at 0.18 second for 60 degrees (I think at 6.0 volts and I am at 5.0 now) it is pretty slow my modern standards. So to cut to the chase, what is a good moderate priced servo that will react faster without over shoot on just 5.0 volts (thanks Castle :-( )and fit in the Losi XXX-T servo holder? I have heard good things about HiTec and Airtronics, and even some mentions about JR and KO. What do you think? And model numbers I should look into? Ball bearing would be nice, metal gear is not critical, I have never stripped a servo gear.

i use the airtronics 94362z for steering in all my vehicles. i'v had the jr 8800s and 9000s and they had problems. never had any problems with airtronics. and specs are .06 for speed at 6v and .09 at 4.8 so its fast. it will cost you some bucks though; bout 120 or so, but well worth it.

Just searching specs and poinions from local racers, I came up with this for a lower cost somlution. Hitec HS-6965HB This is a very fast digital servo for only $85, but it has carbonite gears (tough plastic). Specs are 0.10 sec / 60 deg. and 92 oz in. It is coreless motor and dual ball bearing with great response, resolution, and holding, especially for the price. I like the specs on the Airtronics 94362Z, but from talking to a couple people, the really like the digital servos for the tighter dead band and zero overshoot. Though they agree that the 94362Z is excellent, probably the best analog amp servo made for RC steering. I also found the Airtronics competition digital amp servo (94758Z) with even better speed than the "rock crusher" at just .07 sec (vs .09) but a tick less torque at 92 (vs 100) I am using the 4.8 volt numbers since my ESC BEC is 5.1 volt. Funny thing is, the faster digital servo is cheaper $105 vs $125 at Tower Hobbies. I am realy torn here. The Hitec for $85 is right there except for the plastic gear, but I have NEVER hurt a servo gear. and the replacement Hitec gear set is $7. I know, I did ask for the "best" and now I am arguing cost. I know, "you get what you pay for" but I amon a budget as well.

maybe if you miss 1 week of racing you can fit it into your buget....i know i should be killed for such a thought, but sometimes it helps; that way you can go through your truck and make sure nothing is worn out also...

If I smoke a pair of tires a race that would be $30 or so and the entry fee is $12 so if I miss 2 races, that would be an $85 servo, or miss a 3rd race and ge the $120 Airtronics...
If they wet the track good, then I can run the tires a bit longer, but it is something like 2 to 3 sets of rears to each set of fronts. When they ran it dry "Blue Groove" I went through 3 sets of rears and 2 sets of fronts in one event, but it was 4 qualifying rounds at the Shootout.

I get to expense my lunches from tiem to time. I go to 7-11 instead of Starbuck's. I don't smoke, and I only drink soda, no alcohol. Not much left to shave there.
R/C racing is my toys for fun when I want to excape my family.

Little known secret that Hitec/Hobbico/Tower Hobby Servos are made at the same plant.
I believe these two are the same? Could be wrong but these are the servos I have been replacing my old JR/Futaba/Airtronic servos as the begin aging over the last 5 years
