With the new version of this GTB out with Lipo cutoff, and also the XBR esc, is the original version of the GTB worth getting for $120? I won't be using lipo so I couldn't care less about the lipo cutoff. I will no doubt at some point use some brushed motors to just test them and I would like to have reverse with the brushed motors.
For about $120, would you say the new features of the XBR make that a better buy?

I think the old version of the GTB is much more worth it than a newer XBR. You'll get much more versatility out of the GTB (future upgrade potential if you want a faster motor for example). The XBR is a nice little ESC, but the GTB can simply handle more motor.

That's my opinion just looking at specs and stuff.

Unless he's rock crawling or buying two for a clodbuster, then I still vote GTB.

Nahhh, I ain't rock crawling. Not in my little B4 :D
Is reverse rotation handy? I mean, what popular chassis needs the motor spinning clockwise? In the photos of the GTB it looks huge with the fan on it. Could someone give me the dimension of the height WITH fan and also without it (in millimetres or centimetres, none of this old skool inch stuff ;)) The novak site doesn't have height for some reason. I'd hate to get it and it doesn't fit in my buggy.
Also, if you put a 5800 novak motor on that esc, the esc wouldn't even be working a sweat would it? Compared to the same motor on the XBR that would be shifting into hyperdrive just to run that motor and consequently heat up a lot more.

the xbr also features auto detect brushed mode, you dont have to change the profile....

reverse rotation is only needed when your drivetrain goes the other way around or let say opposite..

the gtb handles any novak brushless motors and also can handle orions and peak racing sensored brushless motor...

gtb height is about 1.5" or less w/fan
