Best Paint Competition – October 2007
Please read carefully!!
The Best Paint competition will be open for entries for the first 3 weeks of the month and will close at Midnight (EST) on October 21st, 2007. At that time I will create a poll which will last for 7 days. Each forum member can vote once for a body in each class. Please vote in all 3, not just the pro. The member receiving the most votes at the end of 7 days will be declared the winner. When voting, please take into account the design, the difficulty, and the execution of each body.
Restrictions: Racing Dont feel restricted to only full scale racing paint schemes. Be creative and post how your creation is inspired by "racing"
(See accompanying thread for this year’s schedule.)
The best paint competition is an opportunity for people to express their unbounded imaginations on an R/C car body. Realism is not required. Let your imagination loose on a piece of plastic to create a work of art.
RULES for Best Paint competitions:
1) Any body may be submitted to the competition (Truck, buggy, touring car, etc).
2) Any body submitted may NOT appear in another RCZone Paint Competition.
3) Photo editing the pictures (other than cropping and adjusting brightness/contrast) is highly looked down upon and may result in disqualification.
4) Anyone may enter a body (professional painters and Modelers are welcome!)
5) Insulting entries or painters in any way will not be tolerated.
6) Restrictions: Racing
7) A maximum of 3 entries per person.
8) Recommended 3 photos per entry are submitted.
9) Cars must be painted within the last 6 months.
10) Imagination is key and fun is a requirement.
Each submission must include the following:
Body and chassis manufacturer and size.
Paint used.
Masks used (hand or precut)
Class entered
Failure to follow the rules or failure to submit the required information will result in a disqualification.
Classes of entry:
Pro – This class is for those of us who are truly the professionals, the guys who are sought out for their exceptional skill. If you make a sizeable yearly income from airbrushing car bodies or anything else, regardless if it is your full time job or not. If you paint a few bodies a month for local guys at the track or sell to a few people through the net you fall into the Intermediate class. If any one person wins 2 Intermediate class competitions they are moved up to the Pro class and people who have previously won 2 Pro classes are required to be in this level. I want this pro class to gather the best talent around to build their reputation (and customer base) and show off their skills.
Intermediate – If you paint or have painted for money, you must enter into the Intermediate class. If you have won 2 contests in the amateur category, you are automatically moved up to the intermediate class. If you’ve been painting for years (not for money) and people look at your work and say, “how’d you do that” or "holy crap, that’s awesome!”, then you belong in this category. This shouldn't be a guessing game.
Amateur – This class is designed for beginning to slightly below intermediate painters. If you have been painting RC bodies for several years and people ask you “how’d you do that” or “holy crap, that’s awesome! Do one for me”, then you don’t belong in this class. 90% of rattle can users qualify for this category. If you are confused, the masses will speak out and place you accordingly. Be honest with yourself and to your fellow painters.
Things to think about when voting:
1) Design: How well does the design fit/flow on the body? Is it visually appealing? How are the color choices? Originality does not count, but naturally something that every painter has done will not score as high as something unique and new.
2) Execution: Regardless of how complex or difficult it is, how well is it executed? Are there paint bleeds? Are the lines straight (or correctly curved)? Are their obvious mistakes? Fingerprints in the paint or paint bleeds? How well executed are the fades and other basic painting techniques? etc.
3) Difficulty: How hard was this body to paint? Is it one color? Is the entire thing 5mm checkers with 4 different colors in each square? Are the mask lines through difficult areas of the body (i.e., wing mounts or stadium truck beds)? It may be 2 colors, but is one marbled? Is one color a candy that requires a special backing technique? This is where experience as a painter helps the most.
If contestants have problems, discrepancies, or disagreements with the competitions or other participants, contact Mab_man20 via PM. Do not post in this thread, it will be deleted.
Viewers of this competition are encouraged to keep their comments to a minimum. Negative, derogatory, or inflammatory comments will not be tolerated. If a contestant makes the aforementioned comments, their entry will be disqualified. Additionally, they will not be permitted to enter the contests for a period not to exceed three months.
Let's show off your talents and above all, have fun. Let the competition begin!!

Painted inside as usual but 1000 grit wet sanded to remove the outer gloss. The decals were applied and freehand airbrushed to have the same "aged" appearance along with the grill and mirrors.

The realism is great!
I like the crack in the windshield.
I had one of these (1:1) and this looks like a direct copy of it.
Great work!

This month's theme is racing. I dont want to just start deleting entrees because those things look awesome. At least I need a description why your body meets the racing requirement. If you wish you may enter next month when there is no restrictions.

Do you mean racing like 1:1 DTM cars or RC racing theme like those above?

That is why I said that this is the most pointless theme for the comp (back when it first came into consideration). Why you ask, because each paint job can be for a racer of an RC car, and each person has there own view to what a racing theme would look like. In other words this comp is open, execpt you have to say why you are entering it.
edit:
I'm not saying you are wrong to do this, but just think it over

I think the first entry (AirBoston) caught that idea right off.
I believe he did a valid explanation for why it should be considered a race car

Hmmmm, my body's will be raced !, no doubt !
So a racing body has to be visible from a distance, and everybody has to recognize is as yours ..(not only by the number)
But you're all right, how does a racing body look like ?, some like to race in black, others race in neon yellow ...i guess there are no rules in racing colors and graphics

You are all right.
The above bodies do fit into the classic RC race schemes and, if people wish to justify it that way, are elligible for this competition. I am still holding out that people will come up with something new, will stretch their imaginations beyond the obvious and come up with the next style that will be seen at every race track around the world. As with any themed competition, there are the obvious methods, and those which take some thinking and creativity.
Dont look at the themes had hinderances, think of them as challanges that force you beyond your comfort zone.
:)

Okay then, mine is inspired my "racing" because they have checkered flags and this is on my racing truggy.
This is a perfectly valid explanation. Your body is a perfect example of what im trying to illustrate. Its a well painted body with a checkers. What is more "Racing" than that?
On the other end of the spectrum, we have an old beater alfa that has seen better days, in this case around a track. Again "racing" but 180 degrees from the black and white checkers.
Think of the word racing, think of what racing means to you and come up with something. Sit down with a piece of paper and brain storm word associations. Im going to post the explanations with each entree and encourage people to consider the explanation before they vote. You can paint a body and use an obvious explanation, or come up with something very creative and partner it with a well executed body. In an ideal world, the creative take on racing combined with a quality body will win.

Here's my entry for the month (another Mini Slider). This paint scheme actually is inspired by Steve Kinser's 2004 Quaker State Sprint Car. It was a tribute celebrating everybodies favorite sailor,Popeye on his 75th anniversary (Popeye's annivesary, not Steve's). Being a fan of sprint cars and having spent seven years in the Navy a Popeye theme only seemed natural. I had to simplify the design from the original car due to the contours of the mini slider body and the small scale.
Body: 18th scale Losi Mini-Slider
Paints: Parma FasKolor and Createx
Mask: Tape, Hand cut vinyl and Stika cut vinyl

Hi guys,
heres something to remember the 9/11. The paint job is not just a simple paint job. It has a massage to it. The blue color with the stars stands for your american flag. The skyline is obviously NY on 9/11 at sun dawn. And the window frame is there to represent the fire. I hope you dont get me wrong with the scheme. The Body in association with the Rock Crawler is to represent the new America with its relatively new scene of Rock Crawling.
Greetings from Germany.
Body is a F350 to fit normally the MGT. Paint is Faskolor, Pactra and Createx Auto Air.

Its nothing I have against you. Most people post their pictures as a link from another website (ie photobucket). If you (or anyone else for that matter) post the images as an attachment RCzone will not display that image when I post it with a [IMG] tag. It will only post the link. This month I will save your images, put them up onto photobucket and display your pics, but that is a lot of work to do when there are 3 pictures per person.
I encourage everyone to use outside picture hosting sites that I am able to copy the image location and paste it into the poll using the img tags.
Thanks
Polls are on the way.

All I ask is to keep spreading the word and keep painting! As the number of hits and entries increase it will be easier to get even more cool stuff from Team Novak, RCCA and who knows who else!

maybe when you do the polls you'll actually post my image. It seems that everytime there is a poll i get a link while everyone else has an image posted. Not very fair wouldn't you agree
Respo could you check your PM's please? Thanks.
