View Full Version : Thinking about getting into brushless, questions about 13.5 setups...

so i love racing stock 27turn. I hate motor maintenance and would rather focus on gearing/car maintanance....

been holding out a long time, but i think its about the right time to switch to brushless. My motor has no power because i dont have any access, even through friends, to a lathe and dont want to waste a pair of brushes running them on a worn comm...and im pretty much tired of that. Brushless is the way to go for me, and its also more cost effective at least. So, a few questions...

1. I took interest in the XBR 13.5 EX BL system...how is it compared to the GTB+13.5 Pro? I ask this because i know what the differences (on paper) are but im really concerned about torque. I dont want too much torque because if i try to get rid of it by gearing higher, then i have to deal with motor heat issues and such...or do these motors not have that problem even when geared tall to dial out extra torque? This is gonna be for offroad, then i want a second system for onroad...and again...not too much torque because spinning out or breaking traction is lame....especially on dirt.

2. How are these systems on pretty good matched 6cell packs?

3. Do these systems add weight, keep the same weight, or reduce it a little?

The cars in question that the systems will be going on are a B4 and TC3.

Any help is MUCH appreciated. Thanks.

btw these caught my attention greatly...

i dont plan to run lipos anytime soon by the way.

subtotal is $180. My jaw dropped. I have an RMF cyclone Tc2 and its been AWESOME so this really got me going, though i can probably get a 13.5 motor used for less than $60....but that only makes the deal nicer....

so in addition to my original post....what do you all think?

I think the SS Pro will have much more torque and be able to handle much taller gearing. I'd also say that the SS Pro's GTB ESC is MUCH better than the XBR ESC, and also lends itself to future upgradability (in case you want a faster motor for bashing around, or if you decide to race mod).

I'd say go with the RMF combo too! I got an RMF HV4400 a year or so ago and it was great. Works flawlessly to this day. :) Plus it comes with a warranty.

Well yeah definately the SS pro when racing onroad, but i already have issues (which were recently nearly resolved by switching to a lower torque motor) with torque with my B4 when racing offroad. Just wondering if the motors with the sintered rotor will produce "too much" torque for offroad purposes. Breaking traction in turns and/or spinning out is lame...

Something to consider when purchasing a BL Novak motor. The versions---Velociti and SS Pro---with sintered rotors were designed and intended for racing.

The EX motors, with bonded rotors, are not advised for racing applications. They are presented as "entry-level", sport motors. At the time we released the EX series, some tracks did not yet allow the sintered motors to be run with brush motors. Therefore, we wanted to continue to provide motors with the bonded rotors for those individuals and events.

Right, & since my local track has been one of those that began to allow it at first only with the bonded rotor(like the EX motor comes), I can speak with some confidence on both(we now allow the sintered rotor to be used, all of us had it anyway, so it's not like anyone'd have an advantage, & we can save our best brushed motors for big races when they'd be needed). Even with the bonded rotor, the 13.5 makes quite a bit of torque(more than any brushed stock I've ever used), but it does make even more with the sintered. The big thing between the two is that the bonded rotor under race conditions will run VERY hot, even if you're just a bit off on gearing(I burned through 2 or 3 bonded rotors because of improper gearing, too many thermal shutdowns, I just pushed 'em too hard), while the sintered rotor allows you to gear it basically any way you wish(it'll take just about ANYTHING & just keep chugging without getting too hot). But both can produce plenty of wheel-spinning torque(& when geared to stay cool, the bonded rotor actually make a car run VERY similarly to what you'd see with a good stock brushed motor, we got some VERY close racing mixing brushed stocks & 13.5's with the bonded rotor). I also agree that you should go ahead & get the best you can afford, & those RMF deals are VERY sweet, trust me, you will NOT regret getting it(& honestly, I'd go ahead & get the SS Pro if you can, will save you a little money in the long run, & you can adjust a few things to deal with the torque, like playing with your transmitter settings to soften the throttle).....

I guess im still noobie with my MX-3 and wouldnt know where to begin to help deal with torque. But since i am also not the greatest as far as gearing goes so it sounds like the sintered rotor would be best. I heard it can handle up to 200 degrees C which is totally nuts!

Yeah im likely gonna get that RMF combo...

and NovakTwo...you're stalking me! j/k glad to see you on boards other than Rctech, seems really helpful :)

You can also find me around there alot, though a good deal of my time there is spent in the Mini/Micro forum, since I'm a Moderator there....
