View Full Version : Radio with the most Range?

What type of radio has the best range. Ive read that 2.4ghz radios seem to have less range than lower AM or FM radios. Is this true?

I have a Jr XS3 currently and I cant seem to get over 100ft away with my brushless pede. I tried everything under the sun to correct the problem other than buying a whole new radio. Ive tried the receiver from the pede in other cars and I can drive as far as I can see. I guess its just the interference from the brushless...

Nomadio. Crazy long range.:teacher:

Yeah, Im stuck between the React, Mx-3FHss or the 3PMFhss. The only thing I dislike about the React is the cheap toy like feel, plus it looks like a toy. I wish they would put all the features of the React into a Mx3 case. That would be the ultimate radio IMO.

Has anyone ever had glitching issues with 2.4ghz radios with high-power brushless systems?

What kind of radio and what kind of battery?
My buddy's stampede gets about 75-150 feet depending on where we are with his spektrum.
Try turning the battery around so the leads are away from the receiver, and relocate the antenna up right next to the receiver. That seems to have done it for me. The other option appears to be to get a cheap 27MHz AM radio like a TQ or something.

Radio: Jr xS3
Battery: Maxamps 3s 6000
Motor: MM 5700 combo

The receiver is up front right behind the servo, the antenna leads directly from the receiver up to the antenna tube. The motor wires are shortened and twisted.

Castle reccomended a ferrite ring, didnt work. They also reccomended to ground the black motor wire to the chassis, also had no effect. I also tried switching receivers and servos. All had no effect. The same receiver/radio in my T4 or Revo have near infinite range it seems!

150ft w/Spektrum, that sort of shatters my hopes for 2.4ghz...

Ferrite ring doesn't work, grounding doesn't work. Promise. Neither will a capacitor. Even twisting the wires didn't do much for mine.
Did you try turning the battery around? Your problem is most likely the huge magnetic field produced by the battery wires. Getting them away from the receiver should reduce their effect on your range by a square of the distance that the wires are moved away. It helped mine more than you could ever possibly imagine.

Actually, the battery wires are toward the back right where the ESC is mounted. Im just lost now. Im pretty sure that my pede being all aluminum has something to do with it. When the FLM chassis was my only upgrade, I could drive further. I just dont get it

I swear, Stampede's have more trouble with glitching than any vehicle I have heard of. Especially when brushless is involved.

I have the Futaba 3PM 2.4ghz radio. I can run my Brushless T4 all the way down to the end of the block where i can barely see which way it is pointing, and it is under perfect control. Haven't lost signal once. This is under power lines and around chain link fences also!
I have not been disappointed with this radio at all!

The best raido I have ever had is an old Acoms Technicplus which was made in Japan. All of my new ones, Airtronics, Hitec (in particular), Futaba have all had range problems at some point. They are all made in China or Taiwan now, so I'm thinking that's the problem. They are also all made cheaply by comparison. My old Acoms, and when I say it's old, it came in my ORIGINAL 1980's Grasshopper kit, is still going strong and I have never had it out of range and no glitching whatsoever. They are limited in their features tho, like no servo reversing, or BEC, but yeah. It's got GREAT range and quality!!!

I guess I need to break out the old Futaba (forgot model #) with the analog voltmeter and the "clip" type battery and give it a try.

I've got the MX3 FHSS in 2 cars, RC18R brushless mamba and an Mi2 with a Brushless Mamba. I can take both cars about 400 feet away and have no problems with control. I researched and optioned for the MX3 FHSS over the spektrum stuff as it's got a faster frame rate. Had the 3PM been the same price I might of ended up with it, but since I've had an MX3 FM for the last 6 or so years, I figured I'd stick with what I know. Now my 10yo is running the FM stuff in place of the stocker in his RC18T.

I have had no problems with my spektrum. I can run my brushless e-maxx until I cant see it anymore and still be in control. My reciver is mounted right next to one of the two 8 cell packs in it.

My Spektrum has the longest range of all my radios. I run my trucks in a street that is almost 1/4 mile long in a industrial zone.

i think an m11 or3pk with spektrum pro module mould be the best for range or a 3pk with a fasst module

Yeah, that's the sort to try. If it costs nothing to try it, why not give it a go. I haven't tried my old analog voltmeter Acoms one with any high power setup, BUT, all my other sets of radio gear I have used in an equally low power setup, and they have glitched like mad, or had terrible range problems from one reason or another.

To clarify, it's about 400 feet to the corner of my street, I'm sure they'll go further, I just haven't had any place to check it, and it's pretty far at the corner anyway. The MX3 FHSS has more power and faster framerate than the spektrum also.

What about the React? I like the telemetry.

I would imagine that the range would vary much more greatly depending on your personal situation (setup in vehicle and area that you run in) than what mid-range radio you choose. Get the one with the features you need.
