(i hope Mab dont get mad at me for doing this..)
yes 2008 is fast upon us and I wanted to start a thread to generate some ideas for the paint comps coming up!
yes....you ask we do 1 of these every year, lol!
i will shoot some ideas:
1)a paint comp where you you have to use xxx main pic glue, fascoat or watered down elmers glue.basically you have to paste some image/work a image into your paint job!i think this would be awesome to see what people come up with!
(yes i pushed the same idea last year,lol....i think its a awesome idea):D
2)i think we should have another themed contest,i think it works well!
3) best muscle car paint job
4) best paint mask.you have to work a store bourght paint mask into your paint job!
5)best flames
anyone have any other suggestions?

i don't remember if its been done but how about race car replication? you find a race car that tickles your fancy, rather it be something you found at a SCCA race, a CORR event a drag race a nascar race or whatever, as long as its an actual race car. and you have to replicate the paint it as closely as possible on what ever body you want

5)best flames
be more specific. there's lots of different kinds of flames. traditional flames, tribal flames, ghost flames, real fire and probably more i just cant think of off the top of my head at the moment.
i kinda like that idea
how about drips. that used to be popular back in the day but no one does it anymore, time to bring that back.
or tagger style body's, aka graffiti influenced type stuff.

Hahahaha, I once made a cardboard AE86 body. It wasn't exactly profesional quality. I read in a magazine years ago about a guy who used a plastic decoy duck as a body.
Might be a little too far outside the box perhaps?

I like the muscle car idea, as well as the drift/tuner theme idea. In general, I like to see what people come up with completely on their own, but sometimes it is fun to set your sights in a specific direction and see how it shakes out.
How about a theme of "anything but a car"? It is kind of like the duck decoy idea, but you could use a regular body and just paint it in an irregular way, i.e. painting a touring car body as if it were the space shuttle. People could do other machines, like airplanes and such, or maybe pick an animal, such as a tiger. Might lend itself to some creativity? Might also be a stupid idea, just thought I would toss it out there.
I hope everyone keeps up the great work. I don't post often (I don't even own an R/C car yet...hopefully a Christmas bonus will remedy that!), but I always really enjoy seeing everyone's work!

All Great ideas !!.. also like the "girly pinky" idea.. (can also be painted by men !)
I would also like to see a "freehand" competition !...
I guess 12 month's wouldn't be enough next year !??

I like these:
-all flames
-Girlie (see 914Gurl below)
-Wildlife
-replica
-freehand (only window masks and freehand shields)
I'd also like to add Old School to the list too. This could include onld school flames, scolops, pinstripes, rat rods, etc. The body needn't be old style as these schemes look just as good on a new Civic as they do on a 30's Ford.

how about a “weathered” theme
do up a body as if it was a car that was a field find or a barn find. kind of weathered and maybe a bit rusty.
like this

Do Candy Theme's. Snickers, Butterfinger, Heresy’s, M&M, etc.
I think it fits R/C's like Ferrari and F1.... a bunch of mini race cars with candy sponsors.
Maybe you could get the candy companies in on it.

also i know we had in the past but what about using only 3 colors?
-best marble effect
-"brushes only"-you cant use a airbrush or rattle can,you have to brush on your paint job, think Bob Ross
-replica paint job- you have to replicate another paint job

More ideas:
-Camoflage (there's a lot of different styles)
-The Masters Inspired - Monet, Picasso, DiVincci etc

Limit the job to three colors. That's it. Three bottles of paint.
Sounds easy right? Consider how many colors go into trim around windows, and backing coats....now you see my point.
3 bottles.

Mini scale 1:18 bodies

Monochromatic

Three colors or three bottles? Given the right 3 bottles of paint, I get the feeling that some of these guys could still come up with quite a few different colors!
One of my ideas was to limit the people to 2 colors, but I guess I've sort of been beaten to that punch.
I also had another awesome idea that I came up with in the shower this morning (don't worry, it could just have easily come to me while I was driving or doing anything else), but alas, I have forgotten it. It was really good too :(. Hopefully it comes back to me.

The biggest problem here is that many people who enter the contest don't like or don't bother following the restrictions. So, no mater what some people think is a cool idea for a contest, my feeling is that these will receive a lot of flack. It seems to me that most people just enter what they've painted recently and don't paint for the contest. Just my 2 cents.

11-27-2007, 02:39 PM
yeah that happens a lot. i don't see why who ever's in charge of the contests doesn't stand up to it. if a body doesn't abide by the guidelines for that month then it shouldn't be judged. no matter how nice it is
davec-nitro-rs4
11-27-2007, 04:17 PM
yeahyeah, three colors. They can be mixed or blended, of course. But if you back with white, that counts as a color. Makes it so you really have to plan your work before you work your plan.
YeahYeahYouWere
11-27-2007, 04:42 PM
Ah ha, I was thinking more in terms of visible colors, and didn't really think about limited what you would back them with.
Of course, the next problem then is what is to stop me from using as many colors as I want and then just claiming I managed to mix them up?
Either way, I don't even own a ride yet o.O! But I've got my first paint job schemed out in my head right now, even if it is going to be a 2 color spray can wonder. I am hoping it'll score for (what I think is) originality! Never seen one like I am thinking of doing, but I've not really been looking long!

-best sponge paintjob or saran wrap usage
-also if anybodys mom,g/f,sisters etc is into scrapbooking, etc, crafts stores sell sissors with diffrent patterns on each sissors.cut blue painters tape with these and you have some interesting homemade paint masks!i believe you can pick up a set for around 15 bucks or so,i know Sams club (walmart store) carries these in the office supply section!

I'm not sure if it was mentioned before and I don't feel like searching...
To build on Fester's idea, pick a technique (CarbonFiber, Marble, etc) and have the painter use this somewhere on the body. This was done in a compitition a long time ago and it forced me to try something new that I wouldn't have tried before. It was fun.

Another thought.... Country (or maybe even state) flags, Pick a flag and use it on a body, It's up to the painter to descide how to use the flag's design and colors. Also the country or state must be specified in the description of the paint job.
