View Full Version : Hardened oil?

I recently purchased a Webra Speed 40 from ebay. The seller said it was never run and when I received the engine it came in the original box, there was no varnish on it, it didn't smell like fuel, and the piston looks good so I believe him on that. However when I turn it over by hand it feels like there are rough spots in the front bearing...it definitely doesn't turn over smoothly.

I'd like to know what, if anything, is wrong with the engine before I install it in any model. What do you recommend?

Dear Ben,

Assembly oil in the bearings has probably hardened. Remove the backcover and prop drive washer and try injecting a penetrating oil such as 3 in 1 or Marvel Mystery Oil into the bearings.

If this doesn't help, submerge the lower end in some methanol, acetone, or lacquer thinner for half an hour or so. Then blow dry and lubricate. If still rough, then the only alternative

is to remove the bearings and wash in methanol. acetone, or lacquer thinner. If you run the engine with the bearings feeling rough, they could be damaged, the ball retainer come apart, etc.
