Best Paint Competition – November 2007
Please read carefully!!
The Best Paint competition will be open for entries for the first 3 weeks of the month and will close at Midnight (EST) on November 21st, 2007. At that time I will create a poll which will last for 7 days. Each forum member can vote once for a body in each class. Please vote in all 3, not just the pro. The member receiving the most votes at the end of 7 days will be declared the winner. When voting, please take into account the design, the difficulty, and the execution of each body.
Restrictions: Concourse
All bodies should be painted (or should I say modeled) to appear as a real life car. The more realism the better. This includes not only paint, but added features like tail pipes, rear view mirrors, seating, dash boards, etc.
(See accompanying thread for this year’s schedule.)
The best paint competition is an opportunity for people to express their unbounded imaginations on an R/C car body. Realism is not required. Let your imagination loose on a piece of plastic to create a work of art.
RULES for Best Paint competitions:
1) Any body may be submitted to the competition (Truck, buggy, touring car, etc).
2) Any body submitted may NOT appear in another RCZone Paint Competition.
3) Photo editing the pictures (other than cropping and adjusting brightness/contrast) is highly looked down upon and may result in disqualification.
4) Anyone may enter a body (professional painters and Modelers are welcome!)
5) Insulting entries or painters in any way will not be tolerated.
6) Restrictions: Concourse
7) A maximum of 3 entries per person.
8) Recommended 4 photos per entry are submitted.
9) Cars must be painted within the last 6 months.
10) Imagination is key and fun is a requirement.
Each submission must include the following:
Body and chassis manufacturer and size.
Paint used.
Masks used (hand or precut)
Class entered
Failure to follow the rules or failure to submit the required information will result in a disqualification.
Classes of entry:
Pro – This class is for those of us who are truly the professionals, the guys who are sought out for their exceptional skill. If you make a sizeable yearly income from airbrushing car bodies or anything else, regardless if it is your full time job or not. If you paint a few bodies a month for local guys at the track or sell to a few people through the net you fall into the Intermediate class. If any one person wins 2 Intermediate class competitions they are moved up to the Pro class and people who have previously won 2 Pro classes are required to be in this level. I want this pro class to gather the best talent around to build their reputation (and customer base) and show off their skills.
Intermediate – If you paint or have painted for money, you must enter into the Intermediate class. If you have won 2 contests in the amateur category, you are automatically moved up to the intermediate class. If you’ve been painting for years (not for money) and people look at your work and say, “how’d you do that” or "holy crap, that’s awesome!”, then you belong in this category. This shouldn't be a guessing game.
Amateur – This class is designed for beginning to slightly below intermediate painters. If you have been painting RC bodies for several years and people ask you “how’d you do that” or “holy crap, that’s awesome! Do one for me”, then you don’t belong in this class. 90% of rattle can users qualify for this category. If you are confused, the masses will speak out and place you accordingly. Be honest with yourself and to your fellow painters.
Things to think about when voting:
1) Design: How well does the design fit/flow on the body? Is it visually appealing? How are the color choices? Originality does not count, but naturally something that every painter has done will not score as high as something unique and new.
2) Execution: Regardless of how complex or difficult it is, how well is it executed? Are there paint bleeds? Are the lines straight (or correctly curved)? Are their obvious mistakes? Fingerprints in the paint or paint bleeds? How well executed are the fades and other basic painting techniques? etc.
3) Difficulty: How hard was this body to paint? Is it one color? Is the entire thing 5mm checkers with 4 different colors in each square? Are the mask lines through difficult areas of the body (i.e., wing mounts or stadium truck beds)? It may be 2 colors, but is one marbled? Is one color a candy that requires a special backing technique? This is where experience as a painter helps the most.
If contestants have problems, discrepancies, or disagreements with the competitions or other participants, contact Mab_man20 via PM. Do not post in this thread, it will be deleted.
Viewers of this competition are encouraged to keep their comments to a minimum. Negative, derogatory, or inflammatory comments will not be tolerated. If a contestant makes the aforementioned comments, their entry will be disqualified. Additionally, they will not be permitted to enter the contests for a period not to exceed three months.
Let's show off your talents and above all, have fun. Let the competition begin!!

Thats true. I keep that there for all the new guys. It hardly ever changes from month to month. If it does change I usually will highlight the changes in the 2nd post of the thread so the regulars see the changes without having to reread everything again.

New requirement.
All pictures must be posted using the [img] tags. A tutorial expaining how to do this can be found here (http://forums.radiocontrolzone.com/showthread.php?t=240038)
When pictures are "attached" instead of linked to, they appear in the polls as links and not images. It is a lot of work and I dont have the bandwidth to upload every attached image to my own accounts in order to post them as images each month in the polls. If a random one sneaks by i will gladly put it up, but I will do my best to hound people during the month. Please feel free to PM or email me with any questions or if you need help posting the links. I am glad to help and host a few peoples pictures, but I cant do 10-15 pictures a month.
edit: if someone attaches their entree, I will contact them and have them send me links. I will then edit the post with said links so that everything is ready to go for the polls.

Details to point out: The roof on a 914 is textured fiberglass, so the model's roof has been wet sanded to remove the gloss. All of the race decals and license plates were hand lettered using a magnifing glass and custom trimmed brushes. The chrome trim and hood pin plates are spazstix chrome. I found the hood pins and rear trunk pins and tie downs were found from other models sticker packs. The Cubie lights were supplied by the owner and were imported from the UK.

Wow, great entries so far.
Zues, nice salvage job! I saw the before pictures on your monstrosity thread. Very impressive turn around. Of course, they call it a T-Rod, even though it is clearly a Thunderbird (though you put a Chevy bow tie on it it looks like!)
Wrobcio, your work continues to impress. Your stuff always looks really great and you manage to make sure it has just enough and is never too busy.
Stan, very nice job for a first time paint job. I'd be pretty juiced if I could pull one off half that well when I get around to my first one.
Airboston, I really like the color choice. Since I went to U. of Illinois, I have this disgusting affinity for orange that just seem unnatural. The scheme and style are a great fit for the body, great work!

I do hope that this is repeated on the voting polls too so that people voting will keep in mind that the bodies entered this month are to be graded on their details as well as the paint.

Thanks AB.
Im hopping on a flight to Australia in a few hours, but when I get there in like 2 days from now ill send out some messages to a few painters this month. There are some awesome entries though!
COOL! It's nice to find a place to show off some artistic skills. I hope you guys like this one...
Body and chassis: Tamiya Avante Carbon Chassis Kit (Egress) with Vanquish body
Paint used: Pactra lacquer for polycarbonate (airbrushed) & Tamiya acrylics for driver & cockpit (brushed & airbrushed)
Masks used: hand cut (3m blue painters)
Class entered: Intermediate
Details: Intakes cutout & filled with aluminum honeycomb mesh, interior pieced together from various Tamiya kits to work with this body. Lots of time spent air-brushing, sanding, polishing & detailing the drivers head (photos don't do justice). Flames each cut from 1" wide strips of masking tape. Then layered so they roll continuously across the body. Oddly enough, the black outline around the window was the absolute hardest part...

Thanks for the nice comments guys. I really appreciate it. I think he kinda looks like Harrison Ford from certain angles...:D
This is actually my first Driver figure I've ever painted for R/C. I did a few anime figurines with my buddy back in the 90's, but there is a lot less detail & shading in those. I semi-followed a face-painting tutorial found on TamiyaClub.com and I think it went pretty well. I also found that making my own pinpoint brushes by splitting toothpicks down the grain probably works 1000 times better than buying expensive fine brushes. You simply make a new one every time you change colors, the tip wears down or you need a slightly different size...

Is everyone entering here simply choosing to not follow the rules, or are they either stupid or inept at painting? Only one person (with the sweet orange roadster) has actually entered in honor of this month's realistic concourse concept. People on these forums must have mental handicaps running in their families; if anyone is still wondering why the forums are dying here.....:roll2:

I understand how you guys are offended, but hes not all wrong-I don't really care whether you guys are following the rules by the letter, but there are many differences you did not mention including the headlights, wheels, tires, windshield wipers, mirrors, window tint, etc. I think Adanmtxt1 is saying that in the past, concourse comps have been of cars where you look at it and say "wait, that isn't real!?!?!?" :)
Quebec, your buggy has a great paint job, but Adanmtxt1 is right, its just not concourse, you know?
I'm not a mod and I don't run the contest, so if the mods think its alright then it is:)

There are a few bodies this month that dont quite make the concourse theme. I will PM those members when I create the polls and they will be able to reenter their bodies next month.
Having said that. Im currently working on my tan and my accent down in Australia. Tomorrow (the 21st in the US) I will be heading totally out of internet range and will not return until the 27th (26th in the US). I dont want to cut the competition a day short so instead of making the polls right now I will wait until I return to Sydney.
