My question concerns lubrication ( 0il %) in a Gasoline /oil, spark ignition, conventional (bushed con rod) R/C engine. I am running a ST. 51 and an Evolution 61 on gas / oil with the STOCK carb and muffler pressure. Both engines run GREAT using a SAM type ignition with hall sensor, a CH ignition or a lightened weed eater coil / 3 oz "flywheel" with a 1/4 - 32 spark plug. I have used various lubricants from outboard to air cooled types and have found subtle differences but over all judicious use of the needle keeps everything working just fine. Considering the byproducts of gas combustion making its way into the crankcase, if my fuel mix is 18%, 105 oz gas + 23 oz oil = 128 oz for the bushed rod engines should I expect a significant difference in the life of the con rod compared to that of an engine using conventional model fuel?
Thank you,

Gary

Dear Gary,

Your 2-stroke and 4-stroke outboard, chain saw, etc., oils are intended for engines with ball bearing crankshafts, needle bearing rods, etc. You would not want to use these oils in an engine with a bushed rod. You must also remember that when burning gasoline the air/fuel ratio is 14,7:1 stoichiometric and with methanol 6.5:1. So, only half as much oil is passing through the engine to begin with. I would recommend that you use Klotz synthetic at the ratios you are using. Otherwise, you may experience rod failure.

Yours,

Clarence Lee

I realize that this post is old, but I was wondering how well the ST & Evo are really working and what you did to convert them to a good, working gas engine? Thx, Allen
