Clarence:
I have questions about 2 stroke engines. What is the difference between ringed engines and ABC engines? I'm new to the hobby, so I'm just now learning about the different engines. I know ringed engines have a piston ring, but which is best? Is one type more powerful than the other? I've noticed that most of the Supertigre engines are ringed? Are Supertigre engines better quality than OS 2 strokes? Are they more powerful?
I have a new GMS .47 that I plan to use on my trainer. I've read your review on the engine on RCM magazine's website. I've thought about buying a Supertigre for my next engine. The Tower Hobbies .46 looks pretty good too.
Thanks for the help,
William
Dear William,
Generally an ABC type engine will develop more power when run at higher rpm than a ringed engine - hence their use in high performance racing engines. When it comes to general sport flying porting, timing, compression ratio, etc., enter the picture so a ringed engine may be stronger than an ABC engine of the same displacement size. ABC engines, due to the lapped aluminum piston, do not stand up well to dirty environment as well as a ringed engine. Generally speaking a ringed engine will have a longer life expectancy than an ABC type engine.
Your Super Tigres, that are now made in China, are well made engines, but in my opinion, not quite up to the quality of the O.S. engines. However, they also sell for less money.
The GMS 47 and Tower 46 are made by the same Chinese manufacturer and are both of excellent quality. You couldn't go wring purchasing either one.

Clarence Lee
