Dear Clarence Lee,
I read with interest your author's note in connection with your
review of the O.S. IL-300 Dia-Star engine. It is perfectly
understandable that you do not choose to continue to doing routine
engine reviews. However, there is something that you haven't done and I
think it would make for a great article. What I have in mind is a
comparison between a premium make like an O.S four stroke and a cheaper
competitor like Magnum for example.
My first four stroke was an O.S. FS 90. I also had the first
Saito 1.20. Since then I have been using Magnums. I'm completely
satisfied with the performance and handling of these engines and find it
difficult to justify paying more to get an O.S.
I also learned the replacement parts for the Magnum are much
cheaper. I ruined the exhaust threads in my Magnum .91 because of a
crash. A friend had a similar problem with his O.S. .91 so we both
ordered new heads for our engines. The cost of my new Magnum head was
only 2/3 the cost of his new O.S. head. Furthermore, the Magnum head
came complete with the valves, valve springs, and the valve keepers and
the O.S. head did not. My friend had to transfer the valves, etc. from
the old head. In terms of appearance, I thought the Magnum head looked
every bit as good as the O.S. head.
I think it would be very interesting to see a side by side
comparison of these engines in terms of performance, durability, and
value. I'd like to know if you feel O.S. engines are really worth the
difference in price.
Sincerely yours,
Herman G.
Mr. G.,
Thank you for the suggestion. I will take it into consideration. Incidentally, you might check my ad in the Classified section. I could have repaired your head and your friends for $28.50. You might keep this in mind if a repair is required in the future.
Best regards,
Clarence Lee
