Hi Stephen, most all internal combustion engines will leave some oil residue on the water. Since you're talking nitro, it has a fairly heavy oil content and not all is burned, therefore exiting the exhaust & into the pool.
Next thing... is the pool olympic sized? Thats about the smallest body of water I'd even consider running a nitro boat in. They get speed pretty quick:D

You need some speed to make sure that the engine gets enough cooling water to the head otherwise you can kiss the engine good-bye.

If I was to use the garden hose (at low pressure) to cool the motor, could the boat then be tested in a pool? If the boat was held still in the water just to get a handle on the basic tune for the motor, or would it just sit there and cavitate?
Or does the boat HAVE to go to the open water, to better load the prop (like wheels on the road is a different loading compared to the car being up on blocks)

How big is the boat??? Some of the small stuff running .15 to maybe .20 engines might be run in a pool, anything much larger will require a bit more open water than your pool can provide. I have a couple of boats that have .40 size engines and I know there's no way to run them in a pool-- not that I haven't thought of that, though. It would be convenient.

You will have a hard time geting the oil out of the pool

Maybe a wading pool? You can't let the boat run free, to be sure, but cleanup afterwards might be a bit easier. Dump the water out, then get busy with the detergent and scrub brushes. In a big in-ground pool, cleanup would be nearly impossible (think "Exxon Valdez") and you might find that the pool's days as a place you can cool off are about over after a couple of runs. It's a safe bet your kids and wife won't thank you for ruining the pool.
Why not break it in at the lake? It's easier after everything is said and done, and break-in will be done under actual running conditions like it's supposed to be, further you usually aren't stuck trying to clean the entire lake after a run.

Man, I have found a salt water lagoon for a test blast. If it stuffs up, I only have to walk out and get it, The majority of this (tidal) lagoon is knee deep.
