Well after no one has answered my first question i thought i would try again.
Can you run li-po's on a brushed motor? and if so what cell count? Could i run a 3 cell with 11.1 v? The motor on my easy star is a permax 6v. but the ni-mh 6 cell is 7.2v

Jumping from 7.2 volts to 11.1 will probably work for some time but will burn out the motor. It depends on the speed control also, you most likely will have to upgrade that.

2 cell lipo will be more realistic, but again without having a esc with lipo cutoff you run the risk of over discharging your pack.

Brushless will be a better investment, you will see the benefits with the same 6 cell battery and then you can upgrade to lipo no problem.

You can run that motor on 2 cell with no problem. If you go to 3 cell you probably need to prop down a touch to keep the amp draw tolerable. But it will shorten the life of the motor. Max on a Speed 400, with reasonable motor life is 9.6V

Then again some people run their 400s on 3 cell lipos all the time. They just replace them more often.

How long can you expect a speed 400 motor to last? And how can you tell if it's going bad?

I have had Speed 400 motors last for hundreds of flights on 8.4 v packs. They can usually handle 9.6, but 11.1 is just too much. You could burn it up in 50 flights or less.
