I can't say for sure if they programmed in anything odd, but a brushless system by nature can produce the exact same current in either direction, and there is no reason it needs to have less performance when reverse is allowed. I turn on the reverse with 2 sec lockout on my Mamba Max when I am practicing without marshals. There is certainly no change in performance with that. And it is sure nice being able to back it off a pipe without walking off the driver's stand.

In the brush mode, there is a higher current setup for forward only and the normal power mode that can do reversing. There is nothing like that for brushless operation.
