Great planes IS duratrax. That's their cheap proprietary car line to make a few extra bucks.

Yes, Duratrax has a sister... and she's not pretty looking either. HAHAHA. Sorry, I couldn't help but say that.

Great Planes also owns tower, which is why there's all sorts of duratrax stuff being sold through tower.

Seems to me that the two large hobby giants (Tower and Horizon) own their own RC companies now or are owned by larger RC companies.

so duratrax and tower are subsidiaries of great planes?

I kinda was thinking that duratrax owned tower hobbies... its kind of obvious when you see things like this:

http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXTSA4&P=7
http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXCLD5&P=ML

they are the exact same thing, only one says tower hobbies and one says duratrax... but I never knew that great planes and duratrax were the same thing...interesting...

I believe its Hobbico that owns them. Hobbico owns GP, Tower, Omnimodels, Duratrax... and I'm sure others

Tower Hobbies is the storefront for great planes model distributors.
Horizon Hobby is also a storefront for Horizon Hobby distributor.

this is what kills RC shops.. RC shops have to sell at towers price or cheaper to make money.. since great planes is the main distributer of all of the shops, they make money by jacking the "store cost" of the goods up, then making towers price slightly higher than that. they both make money because people go to tower to buy the stuff, and distribute to all of the shops at high prices.

support your LHS, dont buy from tower.

I agree about supporting your LHS, but whenever I buy something big, I usually order online (not always from tower). Sometimes I will also order small stuff online, only because my "L"HS is a hour and a half away, so I only go to the LHS like once every 2 months or so. Plus I like talking to people at the LHS:D

I order online most of the time, but now it's from amainhobbies.com, which is someone else's LHS...:D I too only order larger things through the internet though.

When I first got into the hobby though, everything for my first vehicle (including the truck itself) was purchased at my local hobby store.

GP was once a model air plane company before it was bought up. Not sure how the ladder goes or where things fall in line now but it appears both tower and omni are retail divisions of GP.

Usually, we're cheaper on big items than they are online.
Everyone assumes it's cheaper because it's on the internet... even if we're lower. It's really annoying.

yeah we are selling most products cheaper oer at online cost. its annoying when people want something that is slightly over online cost.. for online cost. we usually say sure pay me now and come back in a week to get your stuff.

nice that there are still come LHS actually staying competative out there. Unfortunately that isn't true for the majority of those out there that obviously like to mark things up 25-50% higher than internet sales. It pays to be a smart shopper.
