I've thought about putting a 3 speed in my ole Savage.
Is it a good mod, or are they more pain than they're worth?
Thanks

I wasn't sure whether it would be worthwhile, but even when my Savage S25 SS didn't have the tires glued to the rims, there was a profound difference. The 2-speed had decent accelerationg and top speed, but the 3-speed shoots away and reaches a higher top speed as well. Torque was great, translating to WHEELIE ACTION!!!:D After glued tires....loosen the slipper clutch ;).

It is not necessary, but if you want to extract more performance, hear the transmission shift twice, and have something only a couple other RCs have, go for it. I got the unassembled set, which includes parts to replace the internals on an existing tranny, but you can throw down a little more money and get a fully assembled one.

I'd rather just buy the gears because I have a brand new 2 speed setup in the toolbox. I've just heard some people complain about not being able to change the shift points and such.

3 speeds arent that great, my friend has a three speed savage and i beat it in a drag race with my 2.5 t-maxx when it was stock. 3 speeds arent worth the hype, or the money. save your money for something else.

you only get like 2-3 mph more but acceleration is superb . if you race(who races a savae?) ti isnn't that great because you have too much torque

Unless you dump a monster engine in it, the Savage will never be very fast, so I suppose it might be for naught, but it is cool and fun. The second shift point is easily adjustable from outside the case, but the first is not easily accessible and requires pulling the tranny and taking it apart :(. But that shouldn't be a surprise, as nothing is easily adjustable on a stock Savage :D. That's why I love the Revo.

After driving a 3 speed Savage you'll wonder how you ever lived without one.

My brother races his Savage. He's got the 3 speed, and an OS30VG. Top speed is about the same as my 18TM Revo, but he does get off the line quicker. The OS30 has lots of torque, and doesn't rev real high, so the 3 speed is a good matchup, but did require a lot of suspension setup changes to keep the wheelie monster at bay on the track. His Savage has the rock concepts short shock towers, powerstroke shocks, and handles better than any other Savage I've ever seen.

Of course, it's still a Savage, so my Revo handles the high speed turns a bit better, but that OS30 has so much low end power that he can recover from bobbles on the jumps a lot easier to regain his rthym.

In the end, I think the engine you're using will have the most to do with how much you like the 3 speed. Keep in mind that the 3 speed gearset adds quite a bit of rotating mass to the tranny, so if you want to get the best of all worlds [acceleration, and top speed], you better have a stout mill.
