View Full Version : Good choice for HPI MT2 brushless conversion?

I have a HPI Nitro MT2 that is almost put back together. I purchased this with the intent on converting to Brushless. My question is: What would be the best brushless system for it?

Mamba Max 4600 or maybe 5700?

Traxxas Velineon system?

Mamba Max esc plus a (insert your idea here) motor?

I'd like to keep the combo below 200 if possible. I have seen some Feigao 380 motors, and some 540 short cans. Would these be enough? Do I need to treat this truck any different from a normal stadium truck since it is 4wd? Or am I able to just stick the Mamba system in and go?

Thanks
Matt

personally i think that the mt2 is a bit heavy for the standard mamba max motors.
I would use a mamba max controller with a hacker c50 or similar quaity motor but if you are on a budget one of the feigao 540c L motors like this one

something like that on 4s lipo would likely get that mt2 moving some.

You're going to need some nice batteries for the convo, so keep that in mind also.

Getting the brushless convo under $200 might be a little difficult. I've seen Mamba 5700 packages running 4s push E-Maxx's, so I'm sure it can be done, but you'll need some conservative gearing and nice batteries, not to mention some good fans/heatsinks.

Consider saving a little more an getting a Neu motor...or saving and waiting maybe a month for the Mamba Monster Maxx, which will be $300 (or at least thats what I've heard) that will have an incredibly powerful ESC and Neu motor.

How about a Mamba Max ESC and a Velineon motor? Relatively low kV, easy for 3s use. Longer rotor than the CM36 motors will ensure lower temperatures. Should keep it around 200 bucks.

I would suggest running 8 cells and a short can feigao motor. I ran the 9L and it was always hot. I messed with the ratio and ran 8 cells with I think was a 4000kv short can 5mm shaft feigao motor. It's not a heavy car at all.

I run a tnx with the same motor and 8 cells and it performs great, wheelies and everything. Don't be afraid of using smaller motors.

I guess I should have explained the set up I already have. I am at the same time converting an Ofna 9.5 buggy to brushless. I already have a MM esc, and a Feigao 7xl for that. I already have batts as well. I have one 3s 5350 Hyperion 16c lipo, and one 4s 5350 Hyperion 16c lipo. They are just waiting on me to finish my conversions. Where is a good place to buy the Feigao short cans, I know a lot of places aren't selling Feigao anymore? As far as the Velinieon motor or ESC, I think I have ruled them out only because I'd like to be able to run the 4s in it when I have feeling like breaking stuff.

Wouldn't the motor get hotter if it was a short can, isn't the 9L bigger? I thought that a larger motor will run cooler?

you can run 4s lipo on the velineon motor its just the esc that cant take 4s lipo running the velineon motor with the mamba max controller looks to me to be a good setup for this truck.

Well, a larger can requires more amps to just function, so it's not that efficient. I suppose the motor was just straining already from the lack of volatage.

I've converted a 9.5 also and used 12 cells. I used a 9L motor and it ran warm to hot if I remember. It's all about ratio though. After experimenting with brushless cars I find that a smaller, lower kv motor will beat a bigger higher kv motor, just depends on the gearing, gear up a lot for the smaller motor and it will outperform the larger motor. Ideal cell count for L can i think should be 14 cells or more. Anything up to 12 you should stick to a short can and run a higher ratio.
