View Full Version : Novak 10.5 "clicking"?

I've got a Novak 10.5 that seems to "click" when spinning the pinion gear. I can feel it do this on other brushed motors, but with my MM5700 it spins freely and I wonder if the Novak is supposed to do the same? There's certainly something wrong with it as it sounds like a baseball card in bicycle spokes. It should still be under warranty if there is a problem, but I'm wondering if anyone else has experienced the same thing? It's been run for about 10 minutes and it seemed to start happening after a few hard brakes.

if the motor is in your truck with the pinion and spur meshed then it is most likely a piece of sand that is stuck in one of the gears...I just keep running my truck and it gets thrown out or smashed up. Some times I take a needle and clean the gears.
Or it may have a bad bearing. Other than that I don't know what it could be. I would suggest just taking the motor apart and checking it out, they aren't complicated to disassemble.

To put it simply, don't worry it normal.
Novak motor like many "legal" brushless motors and brushed use a Iron Core and teeth to hold the cooper winding, this create a magnetical cogging that keep the very strong magnet into several position, this is the cliking sound.
This does not happen on slotless motor which rely on cooper winding hold by pressure and glue, the magnetical circuit is mount around and does not affect directly the rotor.
Anyway check if you pinion isn't too tight against the main spur gear

Like Mister-T said, if it feels like it's "pulling" itself into set positions, it's normal.
If you have the motor disconnected from the transmission and it actually makes a clicking SOUND, you probably should at least have someone else look at it just in case.

Yup. Normal thing (especially with a sintered rotor).

Nice. Thanks guys.

My only question is, if this is normal why did it seem to happen after hard braking...hopefully just a coincidence.

Yeah - I'll keep playing around with it and probably give Novak a call. It seemed pretty quiet for the first few minutes, and then got noisy so something ain't right.

Noise = bad

magnet might be damaged ....

ok when people talk about clicking in a slotted motor (such as the 10.5) it is only when you take the motor out and spin the shaft by hand, on the track you shouldnt be able to tell by the sound that a motor is slotted... or at least i dont think you should.
Take care,

That's a pretty accurate explanation.
If you hear clicking while the motor is in the car running, there are issues with the drivetrain, gear mesh, or the motor itself is messed up.
I have an SS5800 with a sintered rotor (8.5 turn), and it does the clicky jerky thing when it's out of a car due to the neo magnet and iron stator. When it's in the car, it sounds just like any other brushless motor.

Can you make a sound clip of your problem?
