Me and my father built an electricub back in 1990 but didn't cover it. I decided it's about time I finished it and learned to fly. My question is does anyone remember flying one of these, and would it make a good trainer. It has the original goldfire 550 with a Li-Po battery 7.4V. I also added an ESC.

Don't know the plane but in general cubs are good trainers. Unfortunately I don't know anything bout the plane.

Chances are you would want to replace that old motor with a modern brushless motor.

What is the wing span and the finished weight of the plane and tell me if that includes the electronics or not. A couple of photos would help.

What is the capacity of the battery and the C rating?

The cub has a wing span of 59 inches and weighs 2lbs. I only had a bathroom scale. I weighed myself, and then me and the plane. The battery is a 2100 mAh and a 15C cont/24C burst. The manual says the cub should weigh in and fly good at 3 lbs (back in 1990). But I have saved some weight with the Li-po and a small receiver. Hope that helps.

Sorry I forgot to put down that the 2 lbs is electronics included. In a ready to fly state.

The 550 motor should be fine, assuming it still works. That is a long time for a brushed motor to sit. Corosion and dirt can build up on the brushes and commutatior and reduce efficency. It may even go bad quickly because of this. But you might as well give it a try.

You went lipo but you don't say if this is a 2 cell or 3 cell.

Is your ESC lipo friendly? Will the LVC be set properly for your lipo pack? Run that lipo down too low and it will be ruined.

The lipo is a two cell 7.4v. My ESC is lipo friendly. It is sized correctly for my current draw.
