I have a KB .40. Its kind of old, but it perfomrs well - or is has. When I run the motor while mounted on my workbench - it starts easy nad runs great. But - when I mount it to my plane - it is incredibly hard to get started and it stalls after about 20 secondds. I think the gas tank in the plane is too low and its having a problem sucking fuel - at least that my theory. Can someone give me some guideline on how high the tank should be in realtion to the motor. Is there some other suggestion re: troubleshooting this problem. Thanks.

i have always heard to mount the fuel tank in line with the carb

With the airplane level, the ideal position is the top of the tank even with the carburator fuel line connection. If moving the tank position is not practical, consider a Perry pump. They operate on motor vibrations and can be mounted almost anywhere close to the engine.
For a troubleshooting method try tilting the plane until the tank is level with the carb. Then, while at that angle, start the engine and see if the problems go away. If not, then its a fuel supply ( pinched, pin hole, blocked supply/vent etc) in the lines. If it does, move the tank or buy a pump.;)
