The 2008 ROAR Electric Modified Off-Road Nationals were held August 15-17 at Hot Rod Hobbies in Saugus, California. The race program was run by shop owner and internationally known announcer Jimmy Babcock. Hot Rod is best known for its hi-bite blue groove surface and scorching temperatures. This past weekend was no different with a visible 5 foot wide blue groove around the entire track and temperatures in the high 90’s all weekend long.
Team Orion Factory Driver Ryan Cavalieri was on hand to defend all three of his Modified National Titles he won last year when he swept the Nats in Albuquerque, NM.
Throughout qualifying Cavalieri proved he was the man to beat by Tq’ing all three of the modified classes. This was also the first race where Ryan chose to run Li-Po batteries in his 2wd buggy and truck. Ryan chose the Team Orion 3600 Race Spec Battery and Team Orion Vortex line of motors to power his way to the top. RC only used 1 battery in each car all weekend long, never having to balance his packs once! This is nothing new with the high quality Kokam cells that Team Orion uses.
In the Modified Truck Class Cavalieri went on to take full advantage of his Tq position by checking out on the field in the first two A-Mains giving him his 1st National Title of the weekend.
In the 2wd Modified Class Cavalieri was on fire. In A-Main # 1 RC pulled out a big lead on the field and never looked back taking the win by over 6 seconds. In A-Main #2 Cavalieri suffered a DNF after a big crash on the tabletop jump in the middle of the track. This would mean the National title would come down to the third and last A-Main. At the start of the tone Cavalieri started out with a fast pace pulling out a small lead on the field. RC drove perfect for the entire 5-minute run making no mistakes. Ryan Maifield who won A-Main #2 put on a charge at the end of the race, but Cavalieri stayed cool and took the win only one corner ahead of Maifield for his 2nd National Title.
In the 4wd Modified Class RC ended up finishing a very respectable second overall. Cavalieri won A-Main #1, then ended up finishing a very close second place to teammate Ryan Maifield in the last two A-Mains by less than 1 second in both mains.
Since joining Team Orion 3 years ago, Ryan Cavalieri has won 7 ROAR Electric Modified National Titles out of 9 possible!
