Japan or BUST! That is the attitude of every racer that participates in the Tamiya North American finals held at Tamiya America's first class facility in Aliso Viejo, CA. Now in its 14th year, to participate in the North American Finals, you first have to qualify in the top 10 of any of the regional races held across the U.S.. There could have been a regional race next door to where you live and you didn't even know it! Positions fill up fast at this race, but Tamiya still accepts sign ups days before the race at a first come, first serve basis until race capacity is reached. Its a free race to enter and what are the rewards you ask? Well, if you're the winner in the GT1 (10.5 turn), GT2 (13.5 turn), or the Mini Class (Mabuchi Silver Can), you win yourself a trip to Japan Mid-November to compete in the Tamiya Worlds. To go along with the Japan trip, every racer in the top 3 of every class get car kits, plus a National Champion title. Spectators got into the action as well with the spectator raffle making it a fun atmosphere for all. With so much on the line for the racers, the racing action was intense! Lets see how it all went down!

Every year the Tamiya North American Finals are held at Tamiya USA's track. As many of you know, the Tamiya property was up for sale and we all thought we saw the last of this awesome track. The property the warehouse is on was sold, but the property the track is on is still Tamiya's and I was told they are going to try to keep the track for as long as they can! :D

When it was time for the Best of Show portion of the event, it was time for racers pull out all the stops with their best paint jobs and attention to detail to take top honors. Here are some of the Best of Show finalists.

Saturday qualifying was under way after racers had thursday and friday to practice. As the three round of qualifying started, the field was sorted out early as racers figured out the dialed set up to click off some fast laps.

I love scale realism. I wish there was TCS in my area or guys interested in the F103 class at least. Mini Cooper lasted a little while now we run Vintage Trans Am

anyway back on subject- there appears to be no F1 cars? Even TCS isn't running them :(

This was the first Tamiya Nationals where brushless motors and LiPo batteries were used. Orion was the official battery sponsor and provided great deals on their new 2400 and 3400 LiPo battery packs.

Going through Tech
Like all the Tamiya Nationals before, you have to put through the Tech area, to make sure its legal, before you put it on the track. New for this year, racers that used the silver can Mabuchi had to leave their motors in tech and weren't allowed to use their own bushing oil or motor spray. Tech officials supplied everything you needed to install your motor in tech while officials watched.
http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d156/joelchump/RCCA/2008%20Tamiya%20Nationals/Sunday/0612008TamiyaNationals.jpg

http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d156/joelchump/RCCA/2008%20Tamiya%20Nationals/Sunday/0602008TamiyaNationals.jpg

Tamiya's Dave Jun was helping Tech out making sure there was no "funny business" going on.
http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d156/joelchump/RCCA/2008%20Tamiya%20Nationals/Sunday/0582008TamiyaNationals.jpg

After you had run your heat or main, your car was immediately put into post-tech where the top three finisher's cars were checked again.
http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d156/joelchump/RCCA/2008%20Tamiya%20Nationals/Sunday/0572008TamiyaNationals.jpg

So what were Tech officials looking for? There are many things that could be done to extract the most speed out of your Mabuchi motor. The legal ones that I know of are, breaking a motor in for a long time, water dipping the motor during break in, using Brasso on the bushings, comm drops, set your ESC to max punch, and Super capacitors. Illegal ways that I know of, and racers have been caught for, are advancing the timing by using an old pinion gear then sticking a thin screw driver between poles on the armature and advance the timing by turning the pinion gear with vice grips. Another way is by burning out the built in capacitors to cut out resistance they cause. One new way I learned of this weekend was using rare earth magnets to strengthen the magnetic field of the Silver can Mabuchi motors. Its was sort of equivalent to "zapping" the magnets in the motor. Tech checked with body clips to see if there were any rare earth magnets inside the transmission case; the body clip would stick to the tranny case if there was a magnet in there. What was also looked for is if racers had a rare earth magnet in their pocket, where they could simply hold the car's motor against their pocket after Tech, and before the car was put on the track. Trust me when I say that nothing got past Tech this year! Tamiya was so serious about the motor rules that the completely replaced Mabuchi motors for an entire A-main.

http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d156/joelchump/RCCA/2008%20Tamiya%20Nationals/Sunday/0622008TamiyaNationals.jpg
In addition to motor and minimum weight rules, racers were also checked to make sure their LiPo batteries werent over 8.44 volts. If they were, the batteries were put on light bulbs to bring down the voltage before the car was put on the track. A lot of LiPo chargers play it safe when charging and charge LiPo's to 8.35 volts or so. The secret to putting your battery to maximum voltage or over was to use a charger where you can adjust the peak thresh hold in the LiPo mode. Another secret that racers learned was knowing a LiPo battery runs better when hot; in turn racers used heat guns or some kind of home made battery warmer before they brought their car to Tech.

The Mini Triple-A-Mains got off to a start with new Mabuchi motors were issued to all the racers when Tech suspected someone wasn't playing by the rules.

The White brothers, Deven and Dylan were the dominant team this weekend in Mini. You may remember Deven won the Mini class in 2007 and that November did very well at the Worlds in Japan.

It was complete domination from Canadian Native Steven Bortolotti in the GT1 class. No other racer in GT1 could touch him as he consistantly ran 21-lap runs to take the TQ spot; as well as the ONLY racer to run 21 laps in the mains. In the mains, Bortolotti had super clean starts which allowed him to take the win in the A1 and A2 mains.

Going to Japan! Tony Tam, Steven Bortolotti, Dylan White.

Congrats to all the Tamiya Champions, and especially the ones on their way to Japan! Best of luck to them! All racers and myself, are happy that the Tamiya track will be sticking around for a while. The Tamiya staff did a great job of making a great race happen and making it run smoothly. Kudos to Tamiya for supplying all the great prizes for the raffle, as well for all the Japan trips. A big thank you to all the sponsors for supplying LiPo batteries and donating extra swag for the raffle. Make sure to check the Tamiya USA site to see if there is a TCS race near you. Maybe you could be the next Tamiya Champion to go to Japan to race in the Tamiya Worlds! Thanks for tuning in to the race coverage! We'll see you all next year! - Joel Navarro
