Does what happens in Vegas, stay in Vegas? Well apparently not so much with the International Indoor Championships, because the world is definitely watching the racing action going on here! Now in its 4th year, the IIC is definitely going strong and has built a reputation of being the premier on-road race of the year. Racers from all over the world, that include many World and National Champions, flock to this race, and its no wonder, it’s in Sin City! For 2008, the IIC made it back to the strip and is being held at the Riviera Hotel & Casino which allows racers to enjoy Vegas in between their races and after racing concludes for the day. One of the anticipated classes of this year is the World GT class, which see’s the return of 1/10th scale pan cars to major racing and they look awesome going around the track. Thanks for tuning in and lets get to the action!

The IIC crew always does a great job of constructing the carpet track which is flat as a carpenter's board and the barriers have done a great job with very little racers breaking their cars.

Here are some birds eye view of the track and the pit area.

If you needed to true your foam tires, you had to go outside in the 100 degree weather as you see Tamiya's Victor Wilck doing here.

The crew from England's RC Racing TV made it out and made their way around the pits interviewing racers.

AMPDRAW has been the IIC's official hobby store for the past few years. They carried car kits, batteries, and every part you'll ever need if your car broke. I even spotted Associated's new SC8 CORR truck.

Both bodies are molded after the real full sized racers. The R8C is a High downforce body, that gives your 1/12th scale neutral handling. The R10 is a medium downforce body. One of the key features of these bodies are that the side fins run through most of the length the body giving it excellent lateral stiffness. The front end has a radically scooped nose to give you extreme front downforce. This lightweight body is made of 0.20 thickness allowing you to meet minimum weight requirements. Best of all, these bodies come pre-dimpled for body post hole patterns to match your CRC, Corally, and Associated cars! Bodies are ROAR Legal! Street Price – approx $15.00

New Modified Brushless Motors (They have no name yet)

http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d156/joelchump/RCCA/2008%20IIC/Friday/New%20In%20The%20Pits/DSC_2796.jpg
It looks like Trinity is stepping up again in the Brushless Motor dept. These new modified brushless motors are a whole new design from the last line of motors. These new motors feature a milled out can to shave grams from the over all weight. Vents have been added to keep running temperatures down. The end bell of the motor features an innovative design that makes it a cinch to change the timing and eases motor maintenance by allowing removal of rotor. These motors will come in half winds 3.5-turns through 10.5 turns. Whole winds 3.0-turn through 7.0-turn. Also available will be a 13.5, 17.5, and 21.5-turns.

iP3800mAh 25C LiPo
http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d156/joelchump/RCCA/2008%20IIC/Friday/New%20In%20The%20Pits/DSC_2798.jpg
These packs are the same as the newest LiPo packs in Trinity’s line up, but they feature a blue rubbery type case. When mounted in a car, the case felt like it had a more grip on the chassis to keep it from sliding out of a car in a crash. These LiPo’s will come in 3200, 3800, 4200, and 5200mAh capacities.

I-Balance Charger

If you can think of any battery in existence, the I-Balance charger can charge it! This charger has a built in AC power supply. Charge anything from a receiver and transmitter pack, up to a 4 cell LiPo. Of course, it also charges NiCd and NiMH battery packs. Cool features of this charger are that it has LiPo balance plugs built in on the side that match most found on popular LiPo packs, a plug for an external heat sensor so your packs wont overheat, and a 12 volt DC out plug to power up 12V accessories.

Be sure to check the Trinity website for all prices and availability.

The 2008 IIC was a great success and the racing action was the best I have ever seen! Here are the Modified Class Winners. Hupo Honigl from Austria took the win in 1/12th Scale Modified with his CRC Gen-X. Carpet specialist, Paul LeMieux, took the win in Modified Foam Sedan with his XRAY T2 '008, as well as winning the King of the Hill award that netted him $750. Taking the win in Modfied Rubber Sedan was Tamiya Factory Pilot and former World Champion Marc Rheinard, wheeling his TRF 416 sedan.

Stay tuned for more photos, results and video!

Barry Bakers E4
As you may have recently read in RCCA, The Fabulous Barry Baker just switched to the Team Magic race team to run their E4 electric and nitro sedans. Barry let me borrow his E4FS (foam spec) for photographs. His E4 was tricked out with all the K Factory optional parts. This was Barry’s first major race with this car, and as he worked on the set up through out the weekend, his E4 ran at a blistering pace! Look for my review of the E4RS (rubber spec) coming soon!

With the World GT class is gaining in popularity, there’s no better way to show case it than in one of the worlds biggest electric on-road races in the world. When asking racers for feedback on driving a 1/10th scale pan car versus a 1/12th scale, the response I got was that the bigger pan cars drove like Cadillac’s. I’m personally fond of this class because it’s the class (235mm pan cars) in which I got my start in competitive racing with fiberglass and graphite Associated 10L’s, Trinity Evolution 10’s. There are several companies now offering World GT type cars that include Team Associated, CRC, Speed Merchant, and CEFX. Here are a couple I had a chance to snap photos of.

Team Associated www.teamassociated.com
Walt Henderson's 10R5
Associated's Team Driver, Walt Henderson, set the TQ with his 10R5, which looks to be box stock. You can see that Walt, as well as all racers, slammed his Protoform Corvette body down to minimum body height.

CEFX
Phoenix-10 1/10th scale Pan Car for World GT Class www.cefx.net

Here's CEFX's World GT offering, the Pheonix-10. It features T-Bar construction with dampener tubes to take care of side dampening, while a shock takes care of forward dampening. Up front there's a Associated Pro-strut type suspension. The rear motor pod can fit any of the brushless motors out on the market with ease, while a ball differential helps you carve out perfect turns. All the aluminum parts are anodized green and look sick!

This is EA Motorsports, Eric Anderson's, Phoenix-10.

Sophia World GT Body
Master lexan body sculpture, Dale Epp of Protoform, brought this new Sophia body fresh off the mold and it looks awesome! The design is simple and fluid, at the same time its bold lines make it look fast while its sitting still. I cant wait to get my hands on one! Dale said the Sophia will be available soon, but remember that you saw the first images of it at RCCA first! :D

So you're asking yourself how I'm shooting these studio photos at a race? With a make shift studio of course! haha Here's a pic of my set up...
http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d156/joelchump/RCCA/2008%20IIC/Saturday/2322008IICSundayMains.jpg
1) A Nikon 70-200mm f2.8 VR and a Gary Fong "Whale Tail" flash diffuser taking a break after shooting the racing action.
2) Simple Green in an old school Trinity Zip Grip bottle with Joel "Magic" Johnson on it to clean my white photo back drop (sponsored by SMC haha) of Jack the Gripper traction compound.
3) A "Snoot" that attaches to my Norman 400B to direct strobe light on a certain area of the track, and not towards the eyes of the racers on the drivers stand.
4) My white photo back drop is a SMC track banner. Thanks SMC! :D
5) A Photoflex 48 inch silver surface photo umbrella.
6 & 7) A Norman 400B (400 watt) battery powered strobe triggered by Pocket Wizard Multi-Max transceivers.

Photos were shot with a Nikon D200 with a Sigma 18-50mm f2.8 and a Sigma 105mm f2.8 macro lens. My camera settings where ISO 100, white balance set to flash, Aperture set to f11, shutter set to 1/125th of a second. All photos were edited using Photoshop CS3.

Great reporting, Joel. It's nice to see your photo setup shot.

Not that it really matters much - but the white balance is a little warm on all of the photos except for the Sophia World GT Body. Though it might not be so much a white balance issue as it is a colorcast issue from the warm walls and carpet... Anyway.. nice photos :) I wish I had your photo setup.

Scotty Ernst, the creator of the IIC, continues to pioneer all new "firsts" at major races. We saw at his Novak Race was one of the first that was an all brushless motor race, and its here at the IIC again. There were a few brushless motor manufacturers that sponsored the different classes at the IIC and provided hand out brushless motors with your race entry. Here are the motors that were used in each class.

The 1/12th scale 17.5-turn class got the Speed Passion 17.5-turn "stock" motor that was engraved "IIC 2008" on the can...thats cool!

http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d156/joelchump/RCCA/2008%20IIC/Saturday/0112008IICSundayMains.jpg
The 13.5-turn Foam Sedan class recieved a Hacker 13.5-turn brushless motor with their entries. I know from experience that these motors are super fast!

http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d156/joelchump/RCCA/2008%20IIC/Saturday/0332008IICSundayMains.jpg
The 17.5 Amateur Rubber Sedan class received an Orion 17.5-turn RACE brushless motor.

http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d156/joelchump/RCCA/2008%20IIC/Saturday/0362008IICSundayMains.jpg
The new World GT class received a LRP 13.5-turn SPEC brushless motor.

Although I didn't snap a photo of it, but we all know what one looks like, the 13.5 Rubber Sedan class received a Novak 13.5-turn brushless motor. :D

Jaco once again sponsored the Rubber Sedan classes with their line of RUBBERZ pre-mounted tires. Last year, the green compound was used, and for 2008, the blue compound was used. If you were racing on a tight tire budget at the IIC, the rubber classes were the way to go because you only needed one set of tires all your practice and racing.

Jaco also sponsored the new World GT class with their 1/10th scale pan car tires. I dont know about you, but I think the Carbon Fiber rims look sick!

Never make bets you're not sure you can win! Mark Smyka and Brian Wynn made a bet with Carrisa Figelski that she couldn't make the A-main in the 17.5-turn 1/12th scale class. Well she did and the losers had to wear "cute" girly cowgirl hats during the A-main. Funny stuff! :p

Hupo Honigl sits on a well deserved pole position, beating out some of the best racers in the world for the top spot.

http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d156/joelchump/RCCA/2008%20IIC/Saturday/1042008IICSundayMains.jpg
Hupo was pressured by Juho Levanen and Josh Cyrul for eight grueling minutes during the main while he ran tight lines making a pass nearly impossible.

http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d156/joelchump/RCCA/2008%20IIC/Saturday/1062008IICSundayMains.jpg
As you'll see in the video, Josh Cyrul pull out every trick in his bag to pass Hupo on the last couple of laps of the main. Do you think results would have turned out differently if the race had gone one more lap??

As you can see from the photos, no frills here. Hupo's CRC Gen-X is pretty much box stock, proving the car works really well as is.

No surprise to see XRAY's Paul LeMieux on top. This was the first time the Protoform R9-F body was ran at a major race. Can you tell its debut was a great success? All the racers in the A-main ran an R9-F body!

TQ Paul LeMieux had the lead early in the main, but a bobble cost him the position, which he wasnt able to regain.

http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d156/joelchump/RCCA/2008%20IIC/Saturday/0642008IICSundayMains.jpg
The Mod Rubber Sedan A-main was probably the closest race of the weekend. Tamiya's Viktor Wilck capitalized on the leaders colliding. Here he leads over teammate Marc Rheinard and XRAY's Paul LeMieux.

http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d156/joelchump/RCCA/2008%20IIC/Saturday/0672008IICSundayMains.jpg
Late in the main, Marc Rheinard was all over Wilck's tailpipe. The two got together before the start finish line in which Wilck got the worst of it.

No, you're not seeing doubles, Walt Henderson and Stephen Boice must have swapped spots for the lead half a dozen times. Unfortunately, a last altercation cost both of them the lead, allowing Mark Smyka to take the win.

Every year, there is cash up for grabs in the King of the Hill Award. A racer's race times, TQ's, A-main finishes are tallied up, and which ever racer has the most impressive resume of the weekend is crowned King of the Hill. Continuing his winning streak, XRAY's Paul LeMieux three-peats this year and takes home $750!
