View Full Version : How is the RTR Spektrum radio (Losi RTR models) compared to a DX2?

Just curious how the DSM radio that some of the Losi RTR's come with compares to a DX2\DX3 radio.....besides the multiple car setups?
I'm more curious on distance, and or performance issues as the RTR transmitter seems to run on 6V (4 AA's) vs 8 AA's in the other setups....
I tried to do a search, but the feature does not seem to work at the moment.

These are the radios I was referring to. No frills, but glitch free and channel conflicts is what I like most about DSM.

Dude... it's like $120 for the crap to make a far inferior radio work.
Get an Airtronics MX-3FHSS and be done with it. :)

Will that radio bind with my spekrum SR3000 rx? I absolutely refuse to use analog anymore even with a BEC because my e-maxx broke after it glitched and ran away on me. And I was using a JR XS3i with the Rx powered by a BEC!!. I want to be able to have a second Tx handy in case I've got a friend over who wants to drive one of my trucks.

I don't see why not but it's so cheap it's not worth it.
Plus you have to re-bind every time you change radios and that's kind of annoying.
Airtronics MX-3FHSS. :)

Thats exactly why its worth it, because I won't be using it all the time. I already have a DX3.0.

Well that's not a bad thought then.
Why not just get that little mini rock crawler and bind your DX3.0 to it, and use the radio it comes with as a spare? :D
Then you have a new truck AND a new radio! Good deal right? :D

Indeed, but I already have an AX10 :P Which I like better than that micro crawler.

Got a reply from Horizon Hobby:
Thank you for your recent email. The Losi radios only need 4 cells because of the improved internal electronic components do not have the current drain of the DX2 and DX3. If you are concerned about latency, I would highly recommend the DX3R.
sure, recommend the top of the line $$$ radio

Spektrum's transmitters have a lower output wattage because of the FCC regulations, which means they really have never needed more than 4 cells. However, since they were based on old stuff before, the rest of the electronics needed the 8 cells to operate properly.
Most of the actual new redesigned Spektrum radios will be 4 cells. Even aircraft radios are going that way. The DX6i is 4-cell as well as the DX5e.
They obviously appear to be advertising, but the cheaper radios on the DSM technology really are pretty slow. The DSM2 stuff is fast.

My old DX2 I had (the non angled one) seemed to do me ok....I'd prob get spoiled with a new DSM2 setup

Yup.
It never bugged me much on cars, but I had an old DX6 for my park flyers and the latency drove me insane. There was actually a noticeable delay between input and response. It made doing any type of precision ish flying impossible. Jump to a DX7 and everything flies better. It's like a whole new airplane.
Same thing on cars, but a little less crucial. They haven't released DSM2 tech for the module conversions or let JR have a ground radio yet.
I'm sure they will though. Just give them time. :)
