View Full Version : 64" Bonzi Fountain torque roll correction

I bought this boat 2 years ago and it handled fine with mild torque steer, now something has changed, the boat now pulls hard to the right and leans badly to the right.I've tried trimming the prop up and down and also trimming the right trim tab down with the left trim tab in the neutral position, not much difference. I did notice the rudder which is directly behind the prop has some play in it, when I brought it home I tightened it and was able to get most of the play out. Would the play in the rudder create this uncontrolable situation or could there be another problem.My buddy bought the same identical boat with no handling problems.

Hey Scott, glad you got a new hard drive, now I can let you know what I found out was wrong my boat.... first the steering speed and sensitivity were set all of the way out to 100% which was making it over steer and therefore making it hook and spin out.... second the rudder was loose again, moving about 1/16"-1/8" each way and third there is definatley interference in that lake, both servos were twitching periodically. This Sunday we should try the other end of the lake where there are no electric lines and see if this works, if that doesn't work we can try Joppatown at Mariner Point Park. If that doesn't work i'm going to try another hull, maybe a Bonzi 51" baja hull, I heard that hull has no handling problems. Is everything ok with your exhaust manifold, did you get it bolted back on?

i did get it back together today. im going to run it tomorow and see what happens. also i put a smaller gas bag in it(250ml) so that will help. im glade your getting your boat set. dont wory we will get it right. i just been trying to get my boat setup right. it feels good to be back on the net for sure. i just cant belave how much the hard drive was. and also i could only get a 160gb drive. i was looking for a 30gb but could not find one that small so owell all is well. did you find out how much that elec. boat is?

Let me see if I can get the Bonzi straightened out first,if I can't then i'll see what Bonzi can do for me on another hull, probably a shorter one, they told me that the 50"-54" have no handling problems, Sunday will be the last test at the other end of the lake, hopfully it was just radio interference.

Hey Scott, Just ordered the new prop,prop shaft and drive dog for the fountain,this time they suggested the Prather 270 because it's smaller than the m 575, he said my engine will turn more rpm's, the m 575 was too big and put more strain on the engine trying to push such a big boat,he told me they just tested a 64" with the 270 and it flew with a stock zenoah. All of the parts will be here on wednesday so she will definatley be ready for Sunday if weather permits.

maby, the only thing you my have to deal with is the prop slippage because of the smaller dia. but it will give you more rpm's. now you my have to give the prop more pitch. we will see what it does and go from there.

well your going from a 75mm prop to a 70mm prop so it can make a big difference. so the smaller prop will give you more rpm's but it being smaller it my cavitate allot meaning it will be spinning and the boat going slow. now don't get to worryed yet lets see if your boat likes the smaller prop. it my or my not and just because bonzi sead it works on there boat does not mean it will work on your. remember if you have 2 of the same boats one mite like it the other one may not. now if it does cavitate alot it can be cupped to give it more pitch to grab the water better.
big boater
11-11-2008, 03:06 PM
o i forgot to say is p270 means ..
p= pranther
2=2 blades
70= its 70mm dia.
so you get a p270 prop.
now if you had a p275
the 75 means 75mm in dia.
but remember the the 270 and 275 have diffrent pitch. as you would geuss the 275 has a little more pitch. so if your 270 prop does not work you can give it more pitch. we will see.

knowing the pitch is only half the battle. lets see what it does I'm hoping it will be fine but it seems that every prop needs something to run good. now you now not to run it the way it is meaning it needs to be balanced. because if not you could have the same thing happen or worse. did you get the stainless steel or the beryllium prop? and man i cant whate till this Sunday to run it was a blast..

I'm not sure what one he is sending me, which one is better, there's only a dollar difference between them.
Im going to try to get some time this week to make the hood pins for your cat,figure out how long you want them and what diameter the should be. The threaded end of the pin will be 10/32, that part will be inside of the boat with a nut on it, you need to figure out how long they need to be to be able to go through the hatch and lock, let me know, i'll probably start them tomorrow.

No problem, we may have have to drill the pins after we fit them to the boat so the clevis pins hold the hatch down tight.

i was just looking at the cat and lets hold off on the pines right now. I'm going to put a latch on the front of the canopy and redo the rubber band idea. the reason is theses cats are very picky on anything that sticks up and may make it flip. now I'm not sure on that but I'm going to try this first. i think with the latch and the magnets it will hold.

I think i'm going to wait until this spring, what I want to do is buy a new Bonzi 51" Baja hull and put my mod 4 in it and all of my hardware and then buy a new stock Zenoah and then mod the hell out of it for the fountain. From what I hear the 51" Baja really moves on the straight aways with a mod 4 in it and is slippery in the turns, this is what i'm looking for.

Scott, I just finished milling the aluminum block for your props, it's 2 1/2" thick, that's the closest I could get without going too thin and to mill an 1" off would take forever, the length x width measurments are 5" x 6". Being 2 1/2" thick this thing stands up without moving at all.

I don't have a bender that big plus you need to flare the end of the pipe at the manifold, that will take a big flaring tool. Can you make it out of copper pipe. I may be able to flare a piece of copper pipe that big. Paint it black or silver with some high temp. paint.

Copper will bend easily especially with heat added,but I still think you will need a pipe bender,I believe the header pipe size is 7/8" and it's made from steel or aluminum. A conduit bender will definatley do the job you may be able rent one at Home Depot, then you can just use steel conduit, a lot cheaper than buying a new header.There is one other thing I almost forget about, it a flexible one piece copper pipe used hot water heaters, you can put any kind of bend in it to make it work, real simple

Take a copper 45 degree off the 90 degree that you already have and aim it towards the center, this should get you pretty close.

i was going to do that but it will throw my pipe tune way off and was trying to tune this pipe setup but its not looking good. buy the time its tuned the pipe will be inside the hull and thats not what i want. so i may just put the other setup on it for now untill i can get some money to buy a good(racing) pipe that will work with the canopy.

We can get some copper pipe, some 90 degree elbows and some 45 degree pipe and make the pipeand solder it all together,it should work.
I Used copper pipe to make the entire exhaust system on my boat. I've got a 25cc weed-eater engine running it. I first used normal solder for the joints and it melted and blasted solder and oil all over the inside of my boat within 2 minutes of running the engine. I would suggest using brass brazing rod to seal the joints. Brass has a 1200 degree melting point compared to the 400 degree melting point of solder. you will have to use an oxy-acetylene torch to do it though because of the high melting point. You wont even need to take the solder out of the current joint you can just sweat the brass right into the joint. I figured i'd let you know before you get as frustrated as i was when i had to tear the my boat apart to fix all the holes in the exhaust

Map gas will also work, it comes in a portable bottle like propane, I use it all of the time with brazing rods on refrigeration lines, it works pretty well.

Hey Scott, sorry I didn't get back to you sooner, my modem on my computer at home quit on me last week, the new one is supposed to be here today, so I had to wait to get work to get on the computer. So you say you found someone in Baltimore that boats also, where at in Baltimore? I have some time off work around the holidays, maybe we'll get a decsent day to run the boats. The Fountain is totally ready to go and I also got the nitro running by cleaning the thrust bearing like you said.
