New from XRAY (http://www.teamxray.com):

The unique XRAY Active Differential is a high-performance, adjustable front gear differential for XB808 buggies… vastly improving the buggy’s speed and handling characteristics. The special design of the internal components using different angled segments allows the diff gears to engage on-power to increase the forward traction and stability to the buggy, making it faster and easier to drive.

While the XRAY Active Differential is a performance option for serious racers who want to gain an edge on superior speed and handling, it is also of great benefit to any level of driver that wants to a more predictable and easy-to-drive car in any racing conditions.

Feature Summary:

High-performance adjustable front Active Differential for improved speed & handling
Designed for XB808 models
Fully adjustable on- and off-power performance using different internal segments and gears
Improves diff action and increases traction
Easy and consistent steering
Designed for serious racers, benefits all levels of racers

Feature Descriptions:

Lighweight Composite Diff Body

Moulded from XRAY's own special composite mixture, the body will not expand when temperatures rise inside the diff. The diff body is hand-ground on a precision grinding machine to ensure maximum roundness, and features a molded-in hard steel diff outdrive ring with a high-tolerance, precision-ground inner hole to ensure super-free turning of the outdrives.

Diff Outdrives

The diff outdrives are CNC-machined on precision German long-turn machines and are manufactured from self-developed, world-renowned HUDY Spring Steel™ – the toughest steel material available. The diff outdrives are additionally ground and strategically lightened to reduce rotating weight. The diff outdrives are then further hardened to ensure maximum strength and longest lifespan. The diff outdrive shafts are additionally precision hand-ground to a very high tolerance to ensure an ultra-smooth tight fit in the diff body and diff gear.

Internal Gears

The internal gears of the Active Diff are die-cast and pressed from high-grade steel material using very high pressure to ensure a very strong core, and then are specially hardened to ensure minimal wear and longest life.

Diff Gear

The diff gear is machined from special HUDY steel material which has been specially developed for gear-type products, additionally hardened and precision ground to fit the tightest tolerance requirements for perfect fit with the diff outdrives. The gears are individually machined on a precision German gear machine and every gear is individually tested and inspected. The diff gear is then laser engraved with “Active 43T” for easy and instant recognition. An optional 41T gear is also available.

Active Diff Segments

The Active Diff segments are CNC-machined from very tough steel, and have very precisely-machined “V” ramp grooves with different angles for easy engagement/disengagement adjustment. The segments are hardened to ensure high life. The Active Diff comes with standard with a 90° segment, while a 120° segment is available optionally.

Active Diff Action

The action of the Active Diff is easily adjusted using different internal segments: standard 90° segment, or optional 120

Apparently, two different companies had exactly the same idea at almost exactly the same time.

Not at all. Xray has had this for a couple years I believe. Fioroni has also made one for awhile. Another company had it before Xray, however I do not remember the company or product name.

As far as this being news, several companies have decided to re-announce products to get them in the public's eye again. This has been going on for quite some time.

The Losi active diff is a new product to Losi for the 8ight 2.0. However the concept and design is far from new as rezendlowd3 said. Losi will announce just about anything and attempt to market it as something new or revolutionary. A lot of people are getting hot and bothered about Losis diff and xray is just trying to save some of the market share that Losi is trying to take with the 8ight 2.0. If I was xray I would have done the same thing. Maybe even a bit sooner. (like a few weeks before the 8ight 2.0 started shipping)

Great idea! I would get one, but I need the car first:(. Can this fit in the RC8?

I just assumed that Losi had ripped off someone's design. I have never really seen Xray copy from anyone else, but it doesn't really matter anyway.

The design looks pretty brilliant really. It's new to me. All I had really seen before were the TorSen diffs, which are a little different if I remember right.

This looks simple and reliable. If I was racing currently, I'd give one a shot. I always liked super thick front diff fluid on power but hated the lack of off-power steering. This should take care of that nicely. Not sure if I'd be faster or not, but it would sure make me think I was. :D:D
