I bought this used Aftershock 3 weeks ago the truck ran great the last two weekends and was very fast on top end, come to find out it was stuck in second gear on both weekends. I pulled the 2 speed gears and adjusted the clutch shoes every way they can be adjusted and now I can't get it to go into second.I replaced the clutch shoes on the engine and the bearings in the clutch bell and also replaced the owb. Should I replace the slipper clutch shoes next, could this be the problem.

Thanks

We had one a while back with a nasty burr or two in the holes where the screw heads are located in the clutch shoes. To fix it, we had to go in and clean it out with a drill bit. To check for a sticking situation, you'll want to pull the shoes out and pull on them as if they're being expanded to engage the 2-speed. If they move freely (no binding) then you're okay. If you feel anything other than spring tension that feels even slightly significant, get that taken care of.

Thanks Eric, I tried that the other night still with no luck, originally it would shift into second, then the shoes would stick and it wouldn't come out of second, that why I was wondering if the shoes might may be worn down too far.

Another thing I've seen (in extreme cases of large amounts of wear), is that the little round bushing things in there that keep the shoes from rotating around the hub will actually rotate past the flat spot and force it all stuck in 2nd gear.

It looks like that may be happening here, I can hold the shoes and move the hub, I don't think I should be able to move the hub or the shoes. I ordered new shoes , hopefully this will work, I don't know what else it could be. Until the shoes come in i'll shim the shoes apart so I can run in second gear for better top end.

Another thing that I fixed this week on an LST...

The shoes were too tight on the hub. The part of the shoe perpendicular to the little round roller things in there was too small, and it was holding the shoes in shear tension against the adjuster screws. This would not allow the shoes to be pulled apart freely while on the hub.

I figured it out by pulling it apart, and assembling the hub/shoes by themselves. Then try to pull the shoes apart. There should be no resistance other than the spring. If it feels notchy like it's rubbing on the threads inside, file out where it's rubbing on the hub.

I ended getting new clutch shoes and a whole new LST 2 clutch upgrade system.

Is it working now? The problem I had last time was a brand new set not clearanced properly from the factory.

No still no luck, I was able to tune it a little better today,I have pulling wheelies every time but still no 2nd gear, everything is brand new and upgraded, could the tune be preventing it from it from going into 2nd? What clearances were you talking about? We're going out early tomorrow to the place where we run the trucks and see if we can't tune it better to get the rpm's up faster and higher to try to catch 2nd. If that don't work I have other new slipper clutch shoes I can try How many turns out do you have on the adj. bolts on your slipper clutch shoes?

I have no idea what the factory setting is, but it should be on their site or in the manual somewhere. That part was done for me.

Take the whole thing apart and see if they pull apart smoothly (with the screws/springs still in there so the shoes don't actually fall apart). If they pull smoothly, put it on the hub (still off the truck) and try to pull them apart. If it's ANY more difficult, you're binding. You should be able to see where it's hitting and can file it down until they don't grab.

If they do feel notchy or tight while the assembly is off of the hub, drill out the part that slides a little more so that the threads don't grab the shoes.

It's annoying but this is pretty much how it goes with these things.

Hey Eric, I think your right about the shoes, I just pulled the shoes apart and took the springs out and re inserted the bolts into the shoes without the springs and put them back on the hub and they bind on the thread of the bolts.I'm going to drill the holes this morning and see how it goes, i'll let you know

Well I ran the truck for 2 hours today and i'm finally getting 2nd gear ,drilling the clutch shoes was the way to go, thanks for the advice. When it hits 2nd it hits hard to where the tires almost break loose from the pavement. Thanks again,
Randy
