View Full Version : Dual rate springs on a Maxx truck?

My E-Maxx came with four blue springs and eight red springs. The blues alone make the vehicle way too bouncy, but a combination of one of each at each corner still leaves a lot to be desired when moving over bumps at high speed. I was considering cutting them in half and fitting the softer reds on the bottom and stiffer blues on top to get the desired rate of bounce. Has anyone carried out a similar modification?

How about some slash rear springs? They are dual rate.

shock oil viscosity will make a much bigger difference in handling than dual rate springs

Will 50W do the trick or do I need something heavier?
Edit: I just changed to a single hole piston in 4 shocks and filled them with 50W oil and mounted the blue Trinity springs. The dampening has improved somewhat, the truck no longer bounces off a jump. However I'm still not satisfied, so once I blow the shock caps off of these I'll invest in some alu bodied big bores and use the same springs with 75W oil.

i have used 75w oil with stock shocks the ride is always ultra plush the big bore shocks will do a lot for handling

75W with what kind of springs on the stock shocks?

As long as you are not getting BIG air that combo should work. If you plan on hitting some big jumps though you will be looking at some bent shock shafts. I have never ran anything heavier than 60wt and that has always done what I needed.

i was running hpi blue stiff or red soft

So I ran it today with one blue spring shock with 50W oil and one hole piston and a stock shock with the red spring, and I seem to have reached a good balance when running 12 cells. Made some 3-4 foot landings and ran over some uneven terrain at speed, doesn't bounce as much as it used to. If only there was a way of using the losi LST/2 shocks. Those huge shocks would be perfect.

Pasan; i race my maxx and can tell you that 50 wgt is the most you want to use on a 90 degree day. On cooler days i will run 40 wgt oil. I run red springs all around which are different than your red springs. If you want to learn a lot about using your emaxx and how to optimize its chassis and supension then go over to
