I used to think there weren't any tracks where I live, but a mini-z track is only two blocks away!

Man that sucks... Tracks are VERY difficult to keep running. That's why they're almost always either out in the middle of nowhere, or in a very questionable area where you will definitely leave your doors locked.
Heck, our indoor track has a bullet hole in the glass on the front door.
That's a 45-60 minute drive (depending on if you risk a ticket or not lol).
It's a bit of a drive but if you only go twice a month or less, it's not too horrible. Plus it winds up being a bigger event. It's a lot of fun. We get pizza, take drinks, carpool, it's a ball.
Sometimes going away from home to do something you do every day is pretty cool.

I feel your pain - our local indoor dirt track (A-Main) is shutting down in a couple of months. I don't live at the track - I've only raced a few times over the last year - but it's sad knowing the place won't be there when the mood strikes.
While I'm bummed to see the local track go away, I'm hoping to see a resurgence in "grassroots" racing pop up. It may just be a group of guys in a parking lot, field, or someone's backyard. Maybe it'll be of a slightly larger scale on a plot of donated land - but it'll be nice to have some options that aren't connected in part or in whole to the financial success of the hosting hobby shop. I think many of us have become too used to having a perfectly maintained surface, heated pits, and a fully stocked hobby shop 10 feet from the track.
Considering the majority of the population is looking at tightening their belts, scaling down spending, looking at more realistic and affordable forms of entertainment, RC racing/bashing may actually see some growth at the local level. There are quite a few people that had far more expensive hobbies that will be looking for something to do after taking a hit to their wallets. I'll always be of the opinion that our hobby offers some of the best bang for the buck of anything out there, and you don't have to spend $1000 to have a blast.
