View Full Version : opinions- where do i go? scx-10 mods

before anyone ( Eric) says it, i know where most of you will tell me! lol

But, thats not the question. The scx-10 is a trail truck, without a doubt. Mine has evolved once again, and i did a suspension stretch to fit the new lid. I added a roof rack ( 1.6 ounces) and some headlights, (1.4 ounces, with switch and wiring, and battery supply) trying to keep it light on its feet. with battery, i am currently @ 4.5 pounds on the nose.
Now, the question lies, do i continue, doing similar to x-con mods, or stop, and run the truck as -is? I think a snorkel will look good, but i am desperately trying to avoid a top heavy rig again. any thoughts?

Stop and run it as it is. You've already learned your lesson when it comes to getting carried away. By the way, do you have photos of the headlights? I'll be doing something similar soon and I have no idea how to go about fabricating the cups.

me? carried away? :p

The lights are simple , Pasan. the simple cheap flashlights, made from platic, and run on a single "AA" are the donors for the light buckets. dril lthem to accept a 5 mm led, and hot glue them in place. a ball cap visor light was the donor for the led's, including the switch, and the batteries ( two 3v flat batteries). will post pics for ya.

Keep Going!!!!

hehe, well Joe, if you remember the other truck, i did get a bit overboard- making for a quite the top-heavy rig. Still very capable, but in a scale comp, it was certainly compromised.

Isn't that the reason we buy new rigs? Once you've gone too far, start another one, re-instate your solemn vows to not do it again, repeat as required!

You'll just end up with an identical Jeep. Make it different. Swamp Dawgs all around and a 2 inch lift.

I say you all ready have a scale rig.

Now have a comp scale rig.

I've decided to not go all out on my scx-10.

Just going to add weights to the tires.
That about it. My next body I might do some lights.

Do what ever with scale stuff for looks.. it's just gonna get ripped off anyway.

BUT, something you should do is 4-link it. I did it both front and rear and it made a noticeable difference. Only cost me about $10 to do.

i think you should build it into a 4 wheel drive sand or mud bog drag jeep

scale comp
First off, those two words should never be together. Whoever came up with the idea of combining them is a retard. Scale crawling is all about scale looks and scale driving. Not ultimate performance. Who cares if it's a little top heavy? It's not supposed to be a comp rig. I think X-Con looked great. It looks a lot like my CR-01, except yours was prettier.

I say leave it as-is and go drive the thing.

I like it. Looks clean and simple. Can't argue with that. :D

Thanks Ron! She's gotten a few new goodies over the winter, and I'm looking to add a couple more things, mainly in the lighting department. I've got some ideas, but I'd be interested to see how you set up your lights...

I'll get ya some pics, but i have to tear out the wiring first, to make room for the new winch. Finally got in on the 3racing winches, ( man, some of those got stupid high on fleabay), and some HPI bumpers for it.

On the fence if she gets more lights on top or not- the front two do a decent job on their own. Loving the way you did the rear of the body on yours too- looks killer.

( Bring it to BF for the moonlight trail run- dairy queen is on me again!)

well, little update.......

I cut the grill with the molded winch out of the jeep in favor of a flat grill and a functional winch from 3Racing...

http://i100.photobucket.com/albums/m8/z-man280/scx-10/82949726.jpg

and mounted up the HPI bumper and winch.....

http://i100.photobucket.com/albums/m8/z-man280/scx-10/2b7a3d6d.jpg

note: i didnt have the speed control for the winch, so i did the next best thing. I "hotwired" the winch to a servo pc board, glued the pot, and set it in with the rx. I then ran a on/off switch ( pictured) to cut power to the winch when not in use, to avoid any "creeping".

the stock hook sucks too,...so with some lexan and a sharpie, me and my dremel got busy fabbing up a little tougher one.

http://i100.photobucket.com/albums/m8/z-man280/scx-10/89649085.jpg

de-anodizing a msc heat sink made a great bumper mount for the rear, and i hacked off the extras on the bumper to make it a true tube style. The holes in the middle are provisions for a hitch.

Try telling that to the 120 people that spend all year getting ready for the Tamiya/MSD scale nationals in May.

I like the rag top. Looks good.

How strong is that winch? Will it lift the whole truck off the ground like your other one would?

z-man280
03-20-2009, 10:51 AM
Yes, Chad. 3Racing really did their homework. Its been marked as a blatant rip-off of another's work, but it does the job nicely. It will pick the jeep completely off the ground ( roughly 5 lbs.) with ease.

should have mire spare tire rack made by end of the weekend. Thanks for the comments guys. Cory,. that Naugahyde is TOUGH! I don't see it tearing any too easily.

thanks:)

I try to go for a walk every night, and of course, the Jeep is my walking partner. About a mile or so, and whatever terrain i can find, the jeep gets tossed at it. It has rolled a few times, and the top and framework held up good so far, so we will see.

What happened to keeping it simple and the CG low?

We all knew you couldn't leave it alone!

the great thing is, 99% is done to the body- so if i feel the need to be more "comp" ready, i can simply drop on another body:)
