I own both a T-Maxx and NMT!
The T-Maxx is a great TOY! To get it to perform well, however, you have to sink a lot of $$$ into it to perform like a stock NMT. If you want something for the back yard that's fairly durable and don't feel the need for speed, then get a T-Maxx, it's a great beginners truck! I don't like the electric starting system, however. It doesn't ignite the glow plug until the engine starts cranking, thus, invites flooding, which can frustrate even experienced enthusiasts. I use my glo starter to ignite the plug, and the T-Maxx starter to turn the engine over.
The T-Maxx is a great entry level truck, but in my opinion, it's quickly outgrown!
The NMT, however, is a different story! I love it. It's beyond the realm of a toy! Right out of the box, it's a zippy little truck (even with the stock HPI .15FE). The steering response, and acceleration are surprising!
I've got a O.S. .15CV-X Hyper in it w/ a 2-speed tranny and it clocks in over 50mph.
I tuned the suspension with 35wt. Trinity silicone and Associated gold springs on the front, and 40wt. silicone and Associated silver springs on the rear. With that setup I've been flying 25+ feet off a 2 foot ramp and sticking the landings. At lower speeds and a higher angle Ive had it about 6ft. in the air and stuck the landing.
I have yet to own a 2wd vehicle like the GT, however, my last time out I broke the front differetial shaft and finished the last tank of gas in 2wd mode. It wasn't near as fun while bashing. I could see how it would add some excitement to racing! With my torqy O.S. .15CV, it was like running on ice, I couldn't keep the rear from spinning around.
Overall, the Nitro MT is a tough, fun, fast, truck, while the T-Maxx is a tough, fun truck!
You just need to decide what you want to do, and what level you are willing to take it!
-Low maintenance/skill thrashing = T-Maxx
-High speed medium skill thrashing/racing = NMT
-Racing = GT
A little more than my 2 cents worth, but hope this helps!

Is the NMT good for backyard runing? I was also thinking of a NMT. I have heard they have a little durability problem. is that true?
