Here's progress so far..found better tires..
http://content.communities.msn.com/isapi/fetch.dll?action=view_photo&ID_Community=ProjectTwin&ID_Topic=1&ID_Message=21
I found out for sure that it is 1/30 scale, not the 1/24 like I thought.
Tomorrow I'll start the tube frame...
The truck will have 4 1/2" wheelbase, dual motors, ESC..and of course, a lexan PT Cruiser body.

Well, layed out the chassis on paper..and slapped together one side of the chassis.

Here it is on the drawing I made..with the tires at the approximate place they'll be..

What did you weld the thing together with? A portable blow torch, or can you use a Hobby Size blow torch?

Well, got the other side of the chassis done. Now It's time to join them and build the roll cage. I can't get the ESC or the servo I need right now, so the suspension will have to wait a bit.
I should have full chassis/rollcage pics tommorrow.

Does it have any off-road capibilities? Or is it just a novelty truck? And what did you take the axle and suspension parts from?
ProjectTwin
03-02-2001, 09:17 PM
It'll be driven for sure..If it's fast enough to get air, I'll have pic of it, lol. The truck should also do well in the rocks, we'll see..the tires are a bit stiff, but maybe weight will help..
Here's the rear axle..minus the housing for the gears. Notice that there's room to adjust gear mesh with different gear ratios, depending on pinion size.
http://content.communities.msn.com/isapi/fetch.dll?action=view_photo&ID_Community=ProjectTwin&ID_Topic=1&ID_Message=30
Now for the inside of the axle assemblies..
This pic shows the square tubing that's slid over the 7/32" brass tubing. The purpose of the square tubing is to strengthen the axle and make mounting for suspension.
http://content.communities.msn.com/isapi/fetch.dll?action=view_photo&ID_Community=ProjectTwin&ID_Topic=1&ID_Message=29
Then I inserted a bushing into the 7/32" rod to accept a 1/8" drill blank, that will actually be the axle.
http://content.communities.msn.com/isapi/fetch.dll?action=view_photo&ID_Community=ProjectTwin&ID_Topic=1&ID_Message=34
Then just slide the axle through..
http://content.communities.msn.com/isapi/fetch.dll?action=view_photo&ID_Community=ProjectTwin&ID_Topic=1&ID_Message=28
And here's a pic of the ring gear...
http://content.communities.msn.com/isapi/fetch.dll?action=view_photo&ID_Community=ProjectTwin&ID_Topic=1&ID_Message=37
Now for the part most of you guys have been asking about.. ELECTRONICS!!
Here's the ESC..It's capable of handling 5-10 cells, has forward/brake, BEC, Low voltage cut-off, over temp safety cutoff (handles motors down to 22turn), FET's are rated at a 26 amp continuous current, but has been tested at 20. Peak current rating is 200amps.

The truck is useless without being able to steer, so here's the servo I picked up. It's not very large, but has 18 oz-in of torque at 6 volts and a 60degree transit time of .14 seconds. Not too bad for a small truck!

Well, that's enough pics for now, lol

Where did you get the body?

03-03-2001, 02:29 PM
whats the overall lenth? and what do you plan to use for shocks?
ProjectTwin
03-03-2001, 02:52 PM
I'd guess the body is 6-6 1/2" long. For shocks I have some from a die-cast toy from walmart..lol
ProjectTwin
03-04-2001, 12:43 AM
The lexan body is a slot car body. The die-cast one in the pic with the canned heat durango is a body from a 1/24 scale model kit, made by Testors, I think.
The whole chassis has been soldered, and it is very strong. The rear axle was easy to make, but the mose time consuming part of the project will making that front axle...I'm gonna dread it, but have to do it, lol

I still say you go with the touring car shocks with the absolute lightest springs you can find (make them if you want!) and use water as shock fluid. Water is pretty thin, so it should be easy to bleed. Hey, it couldnt hurt to try!
And for steering, use dual axles made from 1/8" slot car axles. I say you turn it into 4 wheel drive.
pwetty pwetty pwetty pwweeeaassee make me instructions to doing this? I wont pay $300 for this, but I will pay for instructions! Wif chairwees on top?

If you boil the tires, wont they become softer? just an idea, and the truck is gonan have a solid drve line right? no diffs for ultimate off roading. what kind of motors will you be using, more power! arg! argg! arggg!

Very cool truck man! I want to try a similar project myself and I was wondering where I can order a lexan slot car body like the one you're using. Thanks and keep us posted.

Come on man I've been waiting for more pics, post more. Oh Grandmosterofpool, My lhs has a slot car track and sells cars and all acesories. but that probably doesn't help YOU!! Mr. MAXX
grandmasterofpool - www.parmapse.com (http://www.parmapse.com) makes them, in fact, them and Trinity started as slot cars, and get them from your local Slot Car Track.
