Easy on the caps man, you are gonna make us deaf over here.

I've heard that the .21 conversion is very expensive. Because of all the transmission problems that will occur. The T-Maxx was designed for a engine no bigger than .16. All in all, the MP is your best bet, if you do the math, you practically come out even! You can get the MP running for give or take $375-480(+-)

check out www.ace-hobbies.com (http://www.ace-hobbies.com)

thats where i got my mugen buggy and my ofna monster pirate. they stock all the parts for the pirate, and are very knowledgeable. 269 will get you a kit w/o engine. and then u add radio, servos and engine and u r set. btw the kit comes with a pipe and header.
then there is the 349 kit or something and that comes with an ofna hyper engine.

about the 21 tmaxxes.. they are fast. but its brutal on the stock tranny gears. you will end up spending 200 for the new chassis and hardware to fit the 21. then another 150 for a pullstart 21 engine and then you need a 1/8 scale pipe and header. so thats alot of $$ and then u blow out tranny gears. and the only metal tranny gears available are 50 bucks a gear. and tranny has 3 gears i think.

thats often what is misleading about the tmaxx and the way people talk about them. like oh yeha well my Tmaxx is blah blah blah, but did they tell you they spent 2,000$ on it ???

welll...
first i would like to suggest the ofna Monster Pirate. its popularity is growing quite fast, and hopups are on they way.
The Monster Pirate is a 1/8 scale as well so its gonna have the power of a .21 engine. also you can get an optional 2 speed which will up your top speeds to 60mph or so.
here is a pic for a size comparison--
http://albums.photopoint.com/j/View?u=1311024&a=10179321&p=48019762&Sequence=0&res=high
The MP is the big yellow one on the left. and in the back, the purple thing is my mugen mbx4rr.
I guess the downside (depending on how you look at it) is thats its not an RTR kit. however in my mind having it not be an RTR is a huge plus for two reasons.
1- yer not stuck with crappy electronics that you end up replacing.
2- you have your choice of motor. and your not requited to use a pullstart, therefore you can drop any .21 engine in it you want... from 1hp to 4hp.

this can be a downside tho if you look at it as- i will end up spending more because its not an RTR, but really you can spend the same as an RTR if u buy crappy componensts to complete the kit.

i would take the MP over the Maxx any day. Especially if i were you, coming from onroad, you are gonna expect speed. and to be honest, the maxx is just flat out slow.
mind you people are gonna come in this post and badmouth all the ther other trucks and worship the Maxx. ignore those types of posts, and read ones with fair honest comparisons, not the that one ***** , this one rules posts ( they will only steer you in the wrong directions)

Admittadly the MAXX does have some killer suspension on it. But as of yet, i havnt found terrain that gets my MP hung up or stuck. The maxx also has reverse, many tho, think its just useless added weight, and if you kno how to drive the truck you wont need it.

and to answer your Q about 1/8 buggies. they will be a big investment 1000 bucks or so. they are not built to climb rocks and do serious offroad like the MT's are. they are very low to the ground, and belong on the track. they are great jumpers and are wicked fast- 60mph plus with a good motor in it.

also if you wanna see a monter pirate in action along with my buggy and maxxes check out my video page on my site.

How about the nitro quake from duratrax it seemd like the same as the monster pirate but has more ground clearence. also a newbe queston here what makes a truck 1/8th scale or 1/10? I was looking at the spec on the t-maxx and the monster pirate the length of each truck is almost the same like less than a inch diff the with is close too so what makes them different as far as scale goes i thought it was actual size vers a real car. any help is greatly needed

the quake is rtr, the monster pirate is not. because it comes wit an engine servos etc, u dont have the flexibility right from the getgo.

the Tmaxx is 1/8 scale according to roar rules. however traxxas markets the truck as a 1/10 scale truck because they didnt feel like making a .21 engine for it.

so the difference in 1/8 and 1/10 is mainly engine size .12/.15 or .21, and also size.

thats why the maxx is so darn slow. it just doesnt have the type of engine it needs

Yea the Pirate would be a good truck to buy...Im getting one this summer :D. I watched my friends t-maxx when he drove it around and i have to say im dissapointed with the engine and how little power it has...Yea the t-maxx has great suspension but it is really underpowered. If you want the t-maxx to be even with the pirate your gonna have to spend an extra $200-$400 on it. And one more thing...The Pirate has a bit of a problem with the differential housings. They have been known to fail, but thats only with a high powered engine(picco/o.s.). But if u do get a highpowered engine u need to buy the SABR diff housings. I don't think u should have a problem if u buy the OFNA hyper with the truck.

Dirty Pirate

its reliable, but is not a hot motor. pretty mild. and i would opt to ditch on the pullstart. nobody has any luck with pullstarts. u might wanna get a starterbox and a non pullstart motor. it will save you time, money and frustration in the long run, i quarentee that

If you still might be thinking of the Quake you can get that in just pre-built form (no radio or servo) The servo that comes in the RTR is really not strong enough anyways. It does ok but a mg servo is what is needed. The engine it comes with is very easy to get use to and tune. Do you have an lhs? What do they stock parts for?
I have had my Quake for over a year now and still like it very much. The engine, no its not the most powerful, but it still gets an over ten pound truck to go like 40mph. I use an 11 tooth bell and now 20% nitro(use to use 16%) and I get just over 36mph but I get to that speed quicker. The stock bell is 14 tooth thats what will get you 40mph with stock engine. I dont miss that 4mph at all :)
I think you will like any of these but I do feel that the maxx will wind up costing the most in the long run.

I would be most interested in finding out what th ground clerances are for the monster trucks being discussed here. I feel that thats one of the most important things for a monster truck to have.

QUAKE&SHAKE

The Quake has 3" with slight trimming of the chassis between 3 & 3 1/2"

The T-maxx has 3 1/2" right?

The Mp is about the same as the Quake I have seen a MP with 4" but that took more mods than just trimming the chassis I believe.

I myself dont put clearance as the most important
1st power (.21 has power)
2nd stability
3rd speed
4th Big tires
5th clearance

The extra clearance the maxx has in the center doesnt come into play often if at all. The obstacles that stop my Quake I dont think having more clearance would have helped at all.
I have been in more situations where I have had to pull the throttle all the way and the truck was JUST able to get out of the spot. The engine was screaming giving all it had. The power of the .21 is what got me out not clearance. Like I mentioned Power(3 times more),
stability and speed(approx 10 mph more) outweight the 1/2" less clearance to ME. :)

ooh u mean mine :) :) :) :)
my MP has 4in of GC on it. and it didnt take all sorts of costly hopups to do it. just some simple grinding etc and new set of front shocks. and i beleive 4 inches of GC is more than a stock maxx has.. fyi.
