Hey guys. Hopefully I'm going to get enough money for a T-Maxx here pretty soon, but I might not have enough for a battery/charger. I have a 9.6 volt battery I use to power another electric car I have, but could I use that battery for the EZ start on the T-Maxx? Or would it hurt something? Thanks.

you may be able to use it but it might note have enough power to turn the piston and to light the glow plug at the same time to start the engine. But I might wrong

Well, what kind of battery are you supposed to have to use the EZ start? I thought that you were supposed to use a 7.2 volt battery.

I read something on this website that sais a six cell battery pack isn't powerfull enough for the engine and to use a seven cell pack

You are suposed to use a standerd six cell pack(7.2V).

So I guess what I'm trying to get at is can I use this 9.6v Radio Shack pack without hurting it? I'm completely new to this hobby, and I don't want to do anything wrong to my first nitro truck. And also, why does it matter how many cells the pack has? Oh, and, how much would a desent battery and charger cost?? And would it matter if the battery/charger was top-of-the-line or not? Sorry for all the questions.

hmmm I have a 9.6 volt pack I'll have to try that, the e-z- start will probably die faster cause the extra volts.

If you want to save money you can but a pull-start for it for about 20bucks then you won't need the ez-start system. Its more convient and makes the truck weight less. cause of the electric motor it uses to start it. Just an idea you lhs should have them. Great choice of a truck I must say also! http://www.rccaraction.com/ubb/smile.gif

Yeah, I think that's what I'll do, put a pull start on it, then I won't have to wait till the battery charges. My B-day is coming up, (around Christmas), and all I asked for was some $, so hopefully I'll get enough to buy a T-Maxx. But I didn't know you could put a pull-start on the engine.....cool! For around $20.00? That's even better. My friend is getting an E-Maxx, so hopefully I'll have some competition.

Oh, yeah, Ranch: I'll let you try starting it w/the 9.6 first, and tell me how it goes! http://www.rccaraction.com/ubb/wink.gif (j/k!)

A fully charged 9.6 volt battery could easily burn up the electronics or the motor or switch inside the EZ start.

I don't recommend it, and don't go calling Traxxas when the EZ start fails.

They won't warranty it.

Oh, I better not use it then. Aren't you supposed to use a 7.2v battery? It wouldn't really matter if you got a top quality battery just to turn the engine over then would it?

I actually use Radio Shack 1200 mAh batteries as my EZ Start batteries. I got 2 of them for $15.00 and they do a great job as long as they are FULLY charged. They last quite a long time too. It usually takes about 17 minutes to fully charge these batteries using a timer type charger.

Yeah, you have to remember you need a glow igniter ($10 for a alkaline one) if you switch to use a pull start.
You can get it at tower or some LHS's.

Here is the one i use:
