View Full Version : Wild Willy2 top end speed?

Don't laugh as I know the WildWilly 2 is hardly a speed demon and is never going to go to the races however I have noted a slightly poorer top end speed compared with my old WildWilly! I currently have a 7.2v Sanyo 1400 which I'm assuming if I upgrade to 1850 or even 2400s I will see a much higher top end speed? Is this the case? If so what battery pack would be suitable? Should I change the stock 540 motor? I still would like a good 15-20 minutes running but would like to see a higher top end speed? I've already ditched the mechanical speed controller in favour of the Futable MC230CR but want a little more speed?
Any advice would be greatfully appreciated?

heres my setup
ball bearings
Novak rooster
street body(not the jeep one now)
speed gems ruby
The car has alot more speed now. Also, clean the motor every now and then, and defitely get a 2400 or even a 3000.
Batteries with a larger "mAh" (milli-amp/hours) will not give you more speed--it'll give longer run-time. More voltage (higher than 7.2v--like 8.4v) will give you a faster car.
If you want more speed, first upgrade to bearings. If you want a little more speed than that, get a 27-turn stock motor.

Thanks,
Any particular brand of 27 turn motor? My ESC can handle down to 20 turns. Would this mean a faster ride? Also how many turns is the standard 540 motor?
How about Tamiyas sport tuned motor, I kind like the Tamiya brand name but does it have the performance?
Finally just what kind of performance increase can I expect, I dont wont to get my hopes up too much!
Thanks again,

Sorry Tadium,
Have you a reference to the street body, is it a Tamiya option, any links or pics would
be nice?
Thanks again

actually, the body is off an old tyco super scorcher of mine. I had to do a little bit of work to get it mounted, but it worked out fine. ill try to get pics, but i can't find a free provider right now. I think the lowest turn motor you can get is a traxxas stinger. I havent seen one perform, but they seem good.
I found the old body was a little bit too top heavy for my liking, so I switched it(the new body looks like a lamborgini, but a very bright yellow!!
TC3- that is actually my motor in it right now. Talk about cool timing

also, the motor will probably need to be geared down to get the highest speed
Seiko,
I don't know how many turns a standard 540 has. I also don't know anything about Tamiya's Sport-Tuned motor.
If you want a faster truck, the first thing to do is get bearings. You'll see a small but noticeable speed improvement. A 27-turn motor will give you a significant speed improvement with little to no hit on how much run-time you get.
Unfortunately, I don't know enough about motors to give you a good recommendation. I've been buying Monster Stock Jr and Midnight motors with good results.
A 20-turn motor would be noticably faster still, but you're going to start seeing shorter run-times as a result of the higher current draw.
I'd start out with bearings and a 27-turn stock motor. If you decide that's not enough extra juice you can jump up to something. Learning to control a faster machine takes a little time, so you might not want to jump from the 540 to a speed demon motor!

a standard 540 has ussually 27 turns except traxxas ones which have 30(or 20 for the stinger) but if its a tamiya its 27turns

if that stocker isn't fast enough for ya, look into like a 16turn motor. they are really quick. i'm sure your motor will go alot faster if you do that.

Thanks guys, ok bearings it is. I'm still confused about the motor though, why would a 27 turn stock motor be any different to Tamiyas 540s if the 540 is also a 27 turn? Can there really be such a difference in performance?

A standard RS540 motor with 27t has the timing set differently to a P2K or whatever with 27t..... As for the Tamiya sprt tuned motors I think you would be better off with one of the other brands of 27t motors. Atleast they have replaceable brushes.

Thanks,
What kind of prices are we talking for a 27 turn stock motor then? Lowest, highest and average prices would be a help when I shop around!
Cheers,

for 27 turns, i would go hands-down with P2K, i bougt the P2K pro, 25 bux, worth every penny. hope this helped. ;)

Thx to everyone who posted advice, I ended up choosing a 21 turn (dbl) and the bearing set. Quite a nice speed boost although my poor 1400 nicads only last 15-20 minutes now.
Anyway, more speed is what I wanted, more speed is what I got!
Thanks again,
