View Full Version : NO TRACKS IN SAN DIEGO

It is a %$#&*#$ joke that there is not a track somewhere in or near San Diego. Beatiful weather ALMOST year round and we don't have an offroad track. Complete and absolute waste. Half of these manufacturers build their products in southern california, no tracks to break our parts so we can buy more. Yea I travel to Hemet to race but it sure would be nice to race closer sometimes. Sorry people just venting my frustration that I gotta stare at my cars more than I get to drive them. I'm out.

I agree. It's BS. I'm ready to build my own.

How would you guys think a track here in 'Diego would be supported? I am thinking of starting a business. SD offroad track, top of the line with an on-site hobby shop. Where do you think it should be located? How many would show for a Tues-Thur-Sat race series? Just tryin to do some research. Thanks-
"Drive it like ya stole it!" ;)
Hammer I hope you do it. I think it would do great. I hear people at the local hobby races talking about driving all the way to Socal to race on tuesdays. If you made a pavement track and a dirt track you could rake in the bucks. People are just waiting for a place like this to be local. If you are serious let me I would want to contribute in some way. Maybe even go in on it. It seems like North County is a good area for this type of stuff. I think it would do really well. The closest off road track is in Hemet. Let me know my email address is danquinonesjr@home.com :) :)

That goes for me too. I'm all about starting a track in San Deigo. A friend of mine actually started looking at leaseing a building / wharehouse to open an indoor offroad track somewhere around oceanside. The costs are way up there though.
But its not completely out of the question.
Maybe an outdoor track is the way to go, with a small on-site hobby shop.
If you guys start to build one, and need any help, email me at hairball@onemain.com. I'd be happy to pitch in some time and effort. :)

I think dhw is working on a track but they are still planning on it..

DHW will never build another track, John is too cheap.
We racers gotta step up, it's just too expensive for a 15 year old to get it started!!!!

LOL, Yeah thats is true we 15 year olds cant start a track we need some help. Maybe we can get everyone together and start looking for a place for a track :)

15?? Heck, I'm 22 and can't even think about opening a track becuase of the cost involved.
Me and a friend were looking at renting / leasing a wharehouse to build an indoor off-road track, but the space alone was close to $3000 a month. So we started looking for local outdoor land to rent. None to be found in or around Oceanside California.
I really really want to open up a track / hobby shop, but the costs are insane. I've been wondering how a place like SoCal affords the building they have. Someone said Hemet is basically free land to the owner, so If I could hook something like that up that would be sweet.
Anyone know somebody with an acre of land to spare?? :)

I do!!! in Chula Vista!!

Hemet isn't free, it's a buck a year.
The Temecula area still has plenty of open land begging for a track to be put on it. Anyone interested?
No matter where it it I will be there every spare minute I have, I want more practice!!!

I haven't raced Gas Truck in almost a year!!
I have only practiced like 3 times this year with my xxx-nt! I would be there practicing day and night to get my skills back! ;)

If this thing ever gets off the ground, I can speak for 3 people in saying that we could help.
Heck, I think w/the amount of people interested here, we could all just meet at some predetermined construction place, everybody brings some plywood, cones, whatever and we might have a decent turnout.

Ya, but trying to find a good spot to build the track is a problem.
I looked into leasing a wharehouse in Oceanside and it was close to $5000 a month!! Add things like electricity, water, etc... you get the idea. That was for a 4500 sq/f building. They had a 8000 sq/f one for a little more.
I was thinking of an outdoor track next, but land is SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO expensive around here ($15 a sq/f, 1 acre min purchase, 43,560 sq/f in an arce which comes out to be about $650,000 an acre), it wouldn't be worth even trying to start a track. I was looking at commercial land. You couldn't legally open a track on residential land.
Unless someone has a serious hookup, (Like The Dirt in Hemet, $1.00 a year land fees) Building a track is pretty much out of the question.
I'm starting to wonder how SoCal Raceway in Huntington Beach pulls it off...

I just find it hard to believe that there isn't a public motorcross or bmx track anywhere around here. They're all over the place in Colorado, as well as Virginia. I'm not about to move for the sake of a hobby, but for cryin out loud...there has to be something. The big question is where the hell is it????
Hairball

Its probably because of all the sue happy people in California, and the insane cost of everything here.
Its seems everything in Cali is like 50+% more expensive here then it is anywhere else in the USA.

Heck, you guys can come to my house in a month or two and drive on my track once it's done if you want, until we get another one down here.
Although I must say, Hemet is definitely worth the hour drive to get there. Anyone on this board with a gas truck I highly recommend you go give that a shot. "A full hour away!!!" turns into "It's only an hour away!!!" after just one night up there.

Hey..I'd go for that Aaron.
As far as the track at Hemet goes, what are the ground rules for racing 1/10 scale trucks there? Do they allow 4wd's? I sent an email to address on the page, but have yet to receive a response.

You guys know there's an indoor carpet track in El Cajon, right?
I believe they have ramps and whatnot made up for carpet "offroad" racing if you're looking for offroad action, though I might be mistaken. If I am, I'm sure they would get it going if there was interest.
Ever since DHW closed its facility in Clairemont Mesa, I've been hoping a new one would pop up somewhere, but no such luck. Land is just so freaking expensive in SD right now. Finding an empty warehouse isn't that difficult, but finding one that can guarantee you a long, cheap lease is VERY difficult, making it really hard to put the time/money into building a nice indoor facility when you never know how long you'll have it for.

There is a big open lot on Broadway in Chula Vista. I dont know if it is still for sale though or rent or whatever. I dont know if it is big enough, you might be able to build a tight track but I do not know because I have never been to a real rc track...Maybe a dirt oval..

It is a hobby shop/track if I am not mistaken, in El Cajon. I don't know much more than that. One of the operators of the track is a regular visit to my site (check my profile for the address). Get on there and send him a PM, his nick is Mopar. I'm sure he can provide you with the address. There's also a good San Diego Racing thread over there...

Sorry guys...I totally lost track of this thread. We are still waiting for the papers from NORCCA then we can start building, we could use any wood...stuff like that or if anyone knows where to get a cargo container for cheap please email me. Every one will need a NORRCA membership to run on the track, We dont want to get shut down if someone gets hurt like on the last track.
We just got the ground leveled to start building but we need the papers from NORRCA to even start thinking of building anything.
If you got any Q's feel free to email me at

I have a 1/5 scale Buggy and a couple MT's (Titan and EK4). I will bash with you sometime. What part of San Diego are you from?
Here is a link to "The Dirt" racetrack website:

Just click on the scedule button and it will give the times and prices.
BTW, are you guys aware of the new track just north of Escondido? Here's a link to it:

It is finally finished and has had its grand opening race already. Not much activity right now though because the weather has been so bad.

Yeah, I saw the track in Fallbrook, almost Temecula. Pretty far for me since I live 4 miles from the Mexico Border in Imperial Beach. The only time I get that far north is when the Helicopter Fun Flys at Palomar.
It's nice for me since I live in Escondido. Only a 15 min drive from my house, just about exactly halfway between Escondido and Temecula. I guess for you it would be nearly an hour drive, which is what I have to deal with if I ever wanted to race at "The Dirt" track in Hemet. No fun to drive that far.

Well, you guys have it lucky for the most part. I just moved about a year and a half ago from Coronado, and would give anything, Except my RC's to go back. Hemit is a 90 mile drive from Coronado, and didnt have much luck to do so. Discount Hobby Warehouse used to have a track some years ago. Untill they moved, but Last I heard they built an off road track in a college area in Kerny messa i think? Right around ware Hobby People is, about 5-10 miles away I think? Ile look it up.

Yikes! Coronado to Hemet. Man, thats one heck of a change.
There was a track for a very short time in a park in Kearny Mesa right behind the bmx track. I think it was ordered torn down by the city because they found some kind of chemical in the dirt. Real bummer because it was a nice track, perfect location. Anyways, now I think there is a track in a small corner of Kearny Mesa High, but I've never seen anyone run there. Don't know of any others except for Family Hobbies in Santee. Kind of small though. I like SoCal and have been there a few times but it's indoors and too small to run my 8th scale buggy.

I used to race at the original DHW track in Clairmont, part of the LBR crew. It was the most fun I had in my 6 years of racing r/c. Live in AZ now and the scene is pretty good. Been out of it all since 2001 (no tracks in SD to race at) but recently got back into it.
I'll be back in SD soon, maybe I'll check out the Santee track if it's still there. The Palomar track looks great but it's pretty far north...

Are the best/nearest places Dirt in Hemet and SoCal Raceway? Or?

Depends on what you want to race. 10th scale offroad electric, Family hobbies in Santee. 10th, 8th offroad, ARC Raceway in Murrieta or Palomar R/C raceway in between Escondido and Temecula. Been racing 8th scale offroad buggy Sat nights at ARC myself.

Does anyone (even outside of CA) organize R/C races on the beach? I brought my car to a beach on Coronado this past week (just south of dog beach) and it was a blast. I ran mostly in the hard packed sand where the tide has washed out.
Some portable timing gear, 10-20 people, some cones for a "track" - that could be a lot of fun. What do you think?

hey when's a good time to just go "practice" at the track. I don't want to race. I just want to run my old truck at that track. And how are they with old Tamiya electric trucks? Will my electric get too damaged running that track?

I have been having fun at the ARC Raceway in Murrieta. I live in N. Escondido so Murrieta is only a 30 minute drive for me on the weekend. I have been taking my brushless Rustler there. I like to watch the really good guys run their 4WD 1/8 scale buggies. It is amazing how quickly a vehicle can get around the track with some skill and 4WD.
I have considered checking out the Family Hobbies track in Santee since I run electric. Any recent input on the family hobbies track?

anyone? They all must be getting ready for the "End of Summer Slam" on Saturday (9/2/06). It is the official grand re-opening of the Family Hobbies track.
I did a little research and found that the store was sold with in the last few months and the new owners are all about keeping a track in San Diego. They re-did the track and from the pictures it looks good.
The web site http://www.3familyhobbies.com/ gives some information. It has the race days listed. I called a few weeks ago and asked about the track. I believe the you can practice there during normal business hours except of course for the designated race days (Wednesday night and Friday night 7PM). The website has some pictures and a video.
