They are GPM parts from hobbyetc.com. When you look on their sight, the parts are technically for the electric OB4. But some of the parts will fit on the Nitro.
The one's I have are the front and rear bulkheads. The problem with the front bulkhead is that there isn't a way to adjust belt tension. Initially, it isn't a problem, but as the belt gets older and streches, I will probably have to rig a belt tensioner.
When trying to figure out which parts fit, look at the part on the sight and compare it to the one in the instructions.
Asmenoth
03-06-2001, 07:10 PM
Oh yeah, and two more things. To get the rear bulkhead to fit, you will have to remove some material from the y-brace. The stuff that must be removed is right where the y-brace attaches to the rear bulkhead. The material kinda looks like molded-on plastic spacers. Shave that area smooth, and the y-brace will fit perfectly.
The other thing. The rear peice that covers the back of the rear bulkhead, don't order the aluminum one. It will ONLY fit the Electric OB4. I found this out after I ordered it. The peice for the electric OB4 is not as wide as the nitro part.

Here's something else. www.hongnor.com (http://www.hongnor.com)
That's the company that makes OFNA's cars. OFNA is just the US distributor.
On the Hong Nor sight is a link to an Australian hobby shop that carries all the hop ups that are listed in the instructions that the LHS don't seem to have or, for some reason, can't get.
Now, of course, the prices are in Australian and I can't remember the exchange rate off hand. But I think the American price is half the Australian price, or little more tham half. And they do ship internationally. http://www.rccaraction.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

That kinda looks like the one that came with my NOB4. At least it appears very similar. I'll have to check, need to change the gears anyway. I have the "speed" set-up not the racing set-up.

Asmenoth- The one that comes with the kit is a lever arm type two speed. This one is the clutch kind. These are a lot smoother and are the prefered 2 speed of choice by most people. (at least the ones i have talked to).
Its sweet isnt it? http://www.rccaraction.com/ubb/smile.gif I found it on hong nor's site. I believe it was in the gas onroad car option parts section... http://www.hongnor.com I still havent found out how to order parts from them yet though. mabye someone else knows?? I havent checked out that link that Asmenoth mentioned yet... mabye they have it. It does look like you could just order the clutch piece and the collar it attaches to and modify the stock one...

i got a set up question for u guys..
i was running ob4 yesterday on a straight line and it started to spin out as soon as i slow down or let off a little on the trottle...me and couple of friends just drag racing and this would happen to me .....
any suggestion??

nitrogt15- Make sure your brakes arent locking up as soon as you hit them, that would cause it to go out of control. If that isnt it, mabye it is a glitch problem???
Ok guys, i took the ob4 out for its solo run the other day andd thought id share some observations.... Tighten up them wheel nuts!!! I lost a wheel nut to the dark dungeon of the street. I found the wheel though http://www.rccaraction.com/ubb/smile.gif Also, my flywheel came loose, so be sure you tighten up that pilot shaft too! I dont know if it was wise, but i put a small dab of thread lock on it. If i remember right, i think this was looked down upon, but it did it anyways. Last thing, i run an RB x.12 (my first rb engine) and it seemed to run a little leaner than i wanted it to for break in. I had the high speed wayyyy out (like 5 turns) and didnt really touch the low speed b/c that dern handle was in the way. I noticed though that the low speed needle comes completely out of the spraybar fairly soon, so i didnt think it would make much difference since i was running it at mid throttle. Still, it seemed a little lean. There was good smoke when i advanced the throttle to 1/2 and seemed like lots of oil/fuel coming out of the pipe. Anyways, i hope to have it broken in in 2 more tanks and let it rip!!

mighty taco its funny you should post the thing about the wheel nuts cause today I lost one to.LOL I love this car and the more I drive and experiment with it and tune it I feel more at ease with it.It is very fast and it seems its alot more stable than my n4-tec pro.I raced my 4-tec pro alot last season and it never felt this good,And I did alot of testing and tuning on my n4-tec to.But with my NOB4 Im already past the stability of my pro and I was hoping and expecting that due to the better design.I set my brakes to where I can almost give full braking with out locking up.I use a XR2 and love it with this car,605BB with the metal gears (optional) and it is all the speed I need for it.I bought some of the 21mm "X" patterns from buy HPI and they are awesome and I think I might get some more.I thought that being narrow that I couldnt get good traction with speed but man do I.I am gonna get the 2shoe 2 speed real soon and I want to get the power clutch too but I can see getting anything else but CVD's for the rear the car is flatout awsome and I really can wait til racing begins..The body that came with it sux but hey a simple complaint like that doesnt bother me at all cause I dont like the accord anyways..

Thanks 25RS let us know I got mine for $55 I think.I ran my baby today and I went to take it easy cause I wasnt running the body I know dumb idea but I really didnt cars if anything broke to much cause it would tell me someweak links ala the rear bulkhead and front bumper and I think Ill be doing like Asmenoth and getting the front and rear aluminum bulkheads and maybe a couple of other things.Heck I might sell some of my cars to get alot of things for this car since it is my primary car for summer,Next to my T-Maxx.I cant say enough how much I like this car!!Oh yeah it took about 5 different flips to break the things that I broke hehe and it was windy here in Michigan today and I did a wheelie with a lil bit of help from the wind but I did do a wheelie for about 10 to 15 feet and it came down nicely with no problems I broke it on the way back to me.Asmenoth did you pay $45 for the bulkheads or did you get them cheaper??

Asmenoth
03-25-2001, 04:27 AM
I payed $45 for them. Now remember, they are designed for the ELECTRIC OB4 (at least the ones from Hobby ETC. I'm pretty sure you can get proper Nitro OB4 bulkheads from the Australian store). The rear ones are fine, after modifying the 'y' brace. The front ones do not have a way to adjust belt tension. Unfortunatly, my starter box motors gave out on me just before those arrived in the mail. Since I have been "between" jobs since then, the box had to wait. So I havn't run it yet, but since my new job just started, I will be getting a new box next week.
The front bulkhead should work, but as the front belt gets older and streaches...dunno. Might have to rig a belt tensioner.
Yeah, I've also broken a rear bulkhead, but it was one he** of a bad deal with a board. Would've wrecked any car. Since then I've had it out and given it some more reasonable abuse and it's been fine. I think you can buy a half dozen sets of plastic bulkheads for the price of the aluminum ones. Plus if you hit something hard enough to break the bulkhead you'll certainly bend the hinge pins, and if the hinge pin is bent you'll have lots of fun getting out of the aluminum bulkhead. Oh well, nuff said. Anyone having problems with the one-way in the two-speed? Mine will turn about 20 degrees before it locks. I noticed that HPI uses the exact same bearing and it locks instantly.

I havent had any problems with my one-way yet but have you tried cleaning it?Im not saying you dont know about that but Im asking anyways.Sorry if I sound degrading but Im only asking http://www.rccaraction.com/ubb/frown.gif,Yeah your right about wrecking and bending breaking things I have alot of aluminum on most of my cars and my driving skill is good enough to stay away from the boards. But we all end up in the boards at one time or other LOL.Yeah I looked at the cost of alum. to the plastic but I want to have durability. My Rr. bulkhead broke at the shock tower http://www.rccaraction.com/ubb/frown.gif and did you look at how much Ofna wants for the aluminum front and rear bulkheads $70!! that is why I want to get the ones from GPM $45 Ill be selling some of my cars that I dont care for or want to race and stuff and make my NOB4 the way I see it should be in my eyes and I think Ill love driving it even more I know when I did this with my N4-tec pro I was happy.I hope you fix the one -way 25RS

What tires are you guys running? I was thinking about getting some v-rages. Anyone run these? I heard that slicks are the onl way to go, so i figured these should ork pretty decent. Also, who else has found themselves stiffening up the front end tremendously from the stock setting? I just put some hefty springs up front in hope of making this thing a little more controllable.
For rubber tires, I have found that the HPI R series, x-patterns, B15-40s, Pit 30Ds, all work very well. The new HPI belted radials will be very good too, because you can buy them in 27R-33R compound which will last forever judging from the wear you get from x-patterns. Oh, the pro-lines will grip but they wear out way too fast, probably 10 times faster than the others I mentioned.
MightyTaco
04-05-2001, 08:27 PM
I heard that the pro-lines waer really quick too. I think im going to pick up a pair of hpi slicks or x patterns... we will see.
Does anyone else get wicked torque steer? This thing loves to pull off to the one side when you peg the gas..
That's a result of the bump steer if you don't have the servo mounted right. Or it could be an alignment problem. Try some extra toe-out up front to see if it helps. I'd go for the HPI slicks if I were you. 27Rs for WNY climate.
Asmenoth
04-06-2001, 09:19 AM
Yeah, I agree. Go with the HPI tires. I've got pro-lines on the car now(kinda practice tires) and they are wearing out pretty quickly. I've got the X-pattern bellted and non-belted tires as well, the belted on my electric TA03Pro car, and they do very well.
As for that bump steer thing, if you don't have one, get a Hudy set up system, it works really well. It's dammed expensive ($90 for the set up parts and $30 for the board), but if you can get a deal on it, or have the spare cash, it's well worth it.
MightyTaco
04-06-2001, 11:39 AM
25rs- Thanks for the tire advice. As for front toe, ill mess with it a little. I fixed the bump steer problem last time i set up the car so i know it isnt that.
asmemoth- id love to get one of those set up systems, unfortunately i dont have the cash to shell out. I think i will see if i can pick up some stand alone camber gauges or something... I know someone makes them... right?

Well I have my OB4 Nitro compatition kit put together finally! But I am having a couple of problems!! The one and most important is the rear end belt tensioners and bearings keep poping out!!! This has been my BIGGEST Problem since I have been working on the car!!
My other problem is it wont shift! I have adjusted the clutch but Im not sure if that is the problem, Im really not sure on how the 2 speed works, the 2 gears on the motor shaft are tight and both connected to the 2 on the rear axal so how can it shift to a 2nd gear?? (Im using the OS CVX motor)
If anyone can offer help on the belt tensoiner/bearings or the shifting please do!
MightyTaco
05-23-2001, 11:02 AM
Bearings popping out... Hmmm. I have never heard of this one. All i can say about that is make sure that the rear bulkhead and diff is build and installed properly. As for the two speed, which one do you have? The lever or the clutch? If you have the lever type, mess with the adjustment screw adjusted right. If you tighten it, the engine will rev higher before it will shift and the other way around if you loosen it.
CyberTreg
05-23-2001, 11:02 PM
Yeah I'm pretty sure I have it together right. It's my 1st RC car but I went right by the book on building it. This is really a pain tho!! I crashed it hard a couple days ago when the come loose the Diff moved forward letting tons of slack in the belt and lost the brakes! WHAM! Hit the Curb!
The clutch I have is like the one in the pic on page one of this post. But Im still a little confused on how it will work when all 4 gears are thgether and the 2 on the motor are tight with each other. Anyway....
I think maybe I'll glue that rearend together
cuzz Im outta ideas and it wont stay where it belongs! That or drill 2 holes in the sides and run screws threw washers to hold them in place.
One more question, my kit did not come with the shaft (Gear shaft) to make the middle belt go on the right side. Just the shaft to make it left side. Is this normal? Or did I get screwd? Actually I got 2 left side pulley shafts!!

Wow, i started this thread back in march? Yikes. where did the summer go? There is a full year on my OB4 now :)
Ok, setting up the OB4. This is my setup. It still needs some work because it pushes a little too much. If i put stickier tires in the front, it spins out.. I did try Take off cs22's all the way around and that seemed to work out good. The car just doesn't feel right. In the spring i will get it all hooked up for racing season. Anyway, here is my current setup:
Springs(f/r): TC3 Blue/TC3 Copper
Shock Oil: 50wt all the way around
diffs(f/r): 100,000wt/50,000wt
Camber(f/r): -1/-2
toe(f/r): -.5 deg /-2.5 deg
tires(f/r): HPI 27r slick / HPI b15-40 Slick
Ride height(f/r): 5mm / 5.5mm
Sway bars: rear only
Rear 3mm spacer under bulkhead
Next year i want to get some of the cs22 tires i mentioned and then go from there... probably mess around with the sway bars and ride height till i get the car to handle like i want it to. enjoy!

Who makes alot of aluminum parts for the nitro ob4????
Check on ebay and search, ofna ob4. You will see parts by a guy that has machined his own design for a chassis and ultimate y-brace. He also has a ebay store at http://members.home.net/2wheels-14000rpms/Ebay/3.htm
You can also call nitrohouse.com or bruckner hobbies, they both have ads in RCCarAction. Or go to www.ace-hobbies.com.
Nitrohouse even has some Titanium parts as well. I have ordered form all of them and Nitrohouse has the lowest shipping rates.

Good luck.!!!!!!
Thanks man... I was thinking of the double sided tape and maybe a tie wrap, but the rubber band is even better. Wont transmit vibrations to the receiver.....

PS: Nice car....
Hey y'all! Sure is quiet around here. Anyway, just ordered my OB4 from Ace hobbies. Is it just me or is that a heck of a deal?
I am just getting back into the hobby. Used to mess with electrics back in the 80's. But this time around I want nitro! I got an OFNA MBX R2 for Christmas and am pretty impressed with it. Decided I wanted a street car also and the OB4 looked like a much better value than the other cars in its price range.
I have been paying closer attention to parking lots. Is this some kind of disease? Do you get run out of parking lots or do folks pretty much leave you alone? Assuming you use some common sense as far as noise and staying away from "civilians" etc..

is this thread dead or what?
I've never seen a nitro ob4 up close... could it even compete with cars like the nitro tc3 or the trinity reflex nt? i didn't know if the ob4 was on that level... i was thinking of getting one and putting an mt-12 in it since my brother in law got the force 12,... i'd like to smoke him LOL
any thoughts?

The mt 12 would be a great engine for this car. I have an rb x.12 in mine and it flies! But it keeps up with the best of em once you get it dialed in just right for your track. I still run rubber, but the "fast guys" run foams. Just flip back a few pages and do the 3mm shim under the rear bulkhead trick and put some good and heavy diff oil in the front. I had 100,000wt in mine last year, but it pushed a little with the tires i had on.. i may switch tires or lighten up to like 50k.. anyways, its a great car especially since it has the clutch type 2 speed and side blet option... i bought mine before the changes doh!

3 more questions:
can you run a rear exhaust engine in an ob4?
can you run an SG crank?
is there a Centax clutch option?
thanks
MightyTaco
02-15-2002, 10:40 AM
1. Yes, you just need the proper manifold.. the kit has the one for a side exhaust.
2. Im almost positive you can. i do know the kit doesnt include the nut youll need for the bell.
3. I have heard people running em, but i dont have any p/n's
Here is a pic of my car wayyyyyy back when i first built it showing a rear exhust mounted engine... The ver. 2 kits let you put the middle belt to the left side of the chassis as opposed to the center of the car like mine.

I have my ob4 almost done... I just need to install my engine!
I have an mt-.12 with a standard crank and I'm a little confused about the flywheel in the kit. It just has a through hole... no taper to fit a collet! Also, the through hole is a little small and it won't even slide onto the crank - this is no problem, I can easily open it up.
What's the deal with this flywheel?

SWEET RB pipe :D
Hitec 5625 digital servos for throttle and steering. These are sweet! I have a lot of experience with the 5925's and 5945's which cost around $80 - $90 but these babies are only $55 each and they do the job great! I think I have a new favorite servo.
The only running I've done has been 4 tanks with the body off running fairly rich and I don't know how much faster this thing will be! At my rich setting, doing 1/2 throttle speed runs, it's downright ballistic! I think I'm going to like the mt-.12!

hey guys,
what do u reckons a worth while hop up for this car? the aluminium y-brace or the aluminium gear brace? my gear brace is really flimsy and the tensioner sorta hangs on its side! but i think the y-brace would toughen up the rear too because the plastic ones also too weak.
what do u think?

There has been other guys asking the same thing,And what it boils down to is your pocket.Niether of the stock parts are bad parts so you really dont need either..If I was to recommend a part to get it would be the bulkheads frnt and rear. Now those tend to be a weak link in the car...Maybe some rear CVA's or the 2 shoe 2 speed if you dont already have it.

Hi Guys!
I'm selling my OB4. Its got every option on it. It has the oneway in front and ball diff in rear. Everything is purple down to the screws except the graphite. Since everything is purple it means that almost everything is in aluminum except the graphite pieces. No clutch.
If anyone is interested, send me an e-mail at hsulbc@earthlink.net
The reason why I am selling is because I saw the LD3 today and I want to make room now for the LD3 which is expected soon in RTR form by Christmas.
As to what the LD3 is like well... imagine if OFNA / Hong Nor were to make the TC3 using the hubs and suspension arms from the OB4. Also LD3 will sport metal ring and pinion gears at both ends. Sealed gear diffs also instead of ball diffs like the TC3.
Well anyways if anyone wants my OB4 send me an e-mail. If you prefer to wait for the LD3, I don't blame ya, its worth the wait.

YR4, they actually have the LD3 out? What's the cost? I'd love to get my hands on one if parts are available for them. While I can full option out a TC3, everyone has one. But if I can trick out one of those, and use the Megatech arms (that should be cheap) it would be great!

According to the person I spoke with, the car is still in prototype stage. However, most of the pieces (almost all) looked finished because they were molded pieces. As to the material, the molded parts seem to be of a harder composite similar to the Associated composite because the shock towers on the car I saw was made from the same material. (No more aluminum shock towers).
What is needed to be finalized was the rear hubs which needed to be reconfigured to allow fitment of the wider 30mm or even 32mm foam tires. Also since the rear hub is like that of the previous OB4, there would not be any tie rods in the rear like the Associated so that may be favorable to those who didn't like that design on the TC3.
As to fitting parts onto TC3 and back, the LD3 differential bulkheads will fit exactly into a TC3. However, because the LD3 is metric and the TC3 is standard, the diffs are not interchangeable between bulkheads as in LD3 diff in TC3 bulkhead and vice versa. So what's the advantage for TC3 owners? An option for steel gears (ring and pinion) and gear diffs as opposed to ball diffs. Yes I know that if you go to that expense you might as well buy the LD3 but this is an option for those diehard dedicated Associated drivers.
Okay when is it coming? The RTR is almost finished. In fact the car I saw was the RTR chassis. Since the OFNA people airship their products in from Asia, the RTR will be available before Christmas. I wouldn't expect the Pro until after the new year but don't rule out the possibility for a double release. If you got to have one right away, the RTR looked good and still handled very well on the track. I saw it get into a fight with a 1/8 and all it broke was a body mount.
So for those of you who are tired of replacing belts, this may be the car for you.

I haven't bought many hopups yet. I changed the front diff to a one way diff. I changed the brake disk to a carbon disk. I didn't buy the alu parts (yet) because they are to expensive in my opinion.
I buy my parts at my lhs or i order them throught the internet. I know two sites in the netherlands that sell parts for the nitro XT4. The parts are the same as the OB4 but the partnumbers are different:

rc/guitarman - go to the America's Hobby Center (http://www.ahc1931.com) site and click alum hop-ups. They have many alum. hop-ups at half price compared to the OFNA hop-ups. They work just the same and they're even the same color of purple anodizing.
The best hop-up you can get are:
Alum. rear bulkhead
Alum. front bulkhead
Alum. Y -brace
Alum. side belt tensioner
Alum. side belt pulleys
Alum. drive pulleys
Most of those parts you can get at Americas Hobby Center. However the pulleys are only available from OFNA / Nitrohouse at $20/pair.
If you can pop for $70, I would suggest you buy the Delrin arms (also only at OFNA/Nitrohouse) for the OB4. Get the fronts only. You'll almost be indestructable after that. However, I do not recommend the alum arms because they can bend.

I just bought my first rc car. It's a second hand Ofna OB4 nitro for a good price. The guy didn't drive it very much so it is in a good shape. He sold his engine separately and now i'm looking for an engine. My local shop sells the following engines and i also noted what the guy (i bought the car from) said about these engines:
- hpi: not the most powerfull and fast engines
- OS: good but not the top
- picco: the top but they won't fit an ofna OB4 whitout modification
- nova mega: the top but they won't fit a ofna OB4 whitout modification. They are only for serpent cars.
- nova rossi: same as nova mega. he didn't know if they would fit
- RB: the top and would probably fit my ofna ob4 (true?)
Is this true? And what would you recomend? I allready have a starterbox (bought it second handed). I want to drive at the local track so i don't want a cheap and unpowered engine.
I just started this hobby and i hope i will enjoy it...

Won't fit? I don't know what they are talking about. Anything will fit the OFNA cept maybe a .21 without tons of modifications. I run a Pull start trinity picco P15 without any problems. A non-pull start rear exhaust engine should drop in. There might be a problem if you get CG crankshaft, but a standard crank is no problem. Ask if you have any other questions. I would think a good budget OS .12CR would be a great combo for racing.
engeltje158
12-05-2002, 10:59 AM
The guy I bought the car from told a picco engine and a novamega engine have other cranck shafts than the other engines. And thats why they wouldn't fit. And RB has two types of crancks: a standard and a serpent cranckshaft.
What's a CG cranckshaft?
I'm thinking of a non-pullstart as i have allready a starterbox.
Devin
12-05-2002, 11:05 AM
A SG has an inagrated clutch nut as a regular shaft. A standard requires a clutch nut for the clutch shoes. You generally only use a SG for a centax type system and the OB4 doesn't have that. They require a clutch nut to thread on the shaft. You can buy a standard crankshaft Picco. Im sure the new Serio engines have them. Also a OS .12 or .15 CVR are available in standard shafts. That's the only limitation of the engine. They will fit and work no problem if they are a standard crank shaft...don't let that guy fool you. I race a Ofna OB4 pro with a trinity picco P15 and the thing halls ass.
Edit, its a SG shaft not a CG...sorry.
Devin
12-05-2002, 11:11 AM
You can run this engine no problem and it's non-pull start with standard crank shaft. It's also only 134 bucks from tower.

Hey guys I'am very new to this car but not so new to the hobby I got a third hand Ob4 from a friend that knew nothing about the hobby and since he has had this car he has almost totalled it twice I got it without a engine manual since when he first got the car it was in perfect running order since then he has shot the piston rod through the bottom of the engine, broke almost all four shock caps, broken off the bottom of the carbuerator, drilled a hole through the tuned pipe(he thought it would make it louder), and snapped a lower A-arm which he I guess shoe gooed back together. i got this thing for almost nothing and was wondering if anyone had the part numbers for these: crankcase, lower A-arms, and shock caps.
Thanks for any help.
P.S. as you can see at least one of my friends isn't very smart.

I've had two OB4s and many engines. Whatever the guy said about the engines not fitting in the OB4 is garbage. I've fit everyone of those engines in the OB4 both SG shaft and standard shaft. In fact, the OB4 is the only car that can fit ALL types of engines that I have seen. The stock engine mounts allow for plenty of adjustment forward backward and sideways that there is no reason why any engine would not fit.
So pick an engine. The world is your oyster!!:D

Hey Devin,
Guess what my current project is?????
With the adjustable motor mounts, you can fit just about any engine, even a .21 I was thinking about the larger .25 type buggy motors. However, I am afraid the torque from those things will not only rip-up my two-speed but also my belts before I could get past 10ft of the starting line. Ha!
When I get the motor to mount, I'll show you a pic.
Also, when I rip-up the gears, I'll show you a pic too.

These are the part numbers from my manual. Hope they are they same for you guys in the US.
Shock caps - ES-45C
Lower Arm - H-06
Crank :( I have no idea.
By the way are you guys mostly driving the Version 1 or 2? Has anyone out there bought a conversion kit for a Version 1? I would love to upgrade to the Version 2, as I have heard that the Version 1 two speed doesn't handle the higher horse power engines very well.
Any comment/advice would be appreciated.:D

Sorry, I don't know about metal spur gears. I haven't had any trouble with the plastic ones. They a little bit of wear but they are holding up just fine.
Just make sure you have a good fit between the gears. If they are too far apart they can strip the spur gears. And that's a pain:mad:

Good luck with the .21 conversion YR4Dude, I bet the power would mess with the drive train a little. I haven't had any problem with the .15 picco.
Those part numbers are Hong Nor part numbers and not accessable in the US. I suggest searching for the part number on www.nitrohouse.com.
As for the Version 1 to 2 kit, for the 99 dollars you spend on the two speed clutch type, why not buy the whole version 2 kit for 190 bucks?

Well Browny, I have been running the dog out of it lately and it's officially on the shelf until February now for the winter. I have had problems with the belts time and time again. That seems to be my only crutch with the car. I've found the causes of each occurance, but I am going to buy an NTC3 over the Holiday's and keep the OB4 as a back up car. I want the shaft driven features that the NTC3 has to offer, so I can eliminate the belt issue all together. I am also going to strictly run the Southwest Series next year which is a series of 8 races, over 8 months, run on large asphalt tracks across the state of Texas. It's a great learning ground for the major events, if I ever make it that far. My wife and I are also having a baby girl in April of 2003, so I'm sure I won't have near as much time to run as I've been accustomed to so far. How's the racing going down under??
Browny
12-11-2002, 06:28 AM
Know what you mean 'bout the baby. We just had our second three weeks ago and I know time will be a rare commodity. All the best with the baby thing. Keep me posted.
Racing has finished here too. I came first in my class for the season but it's not much to brag about. Next season I'm racing with the big boys. I'm looking forward to that.:D
Best of luck with the NTC3. I had a little drive of one recently and I did like the feel of the car. A lot of spares available too, but expensive down here.
So being from Texas you must be either a Cowboys, Texans, Spurs, Mavericks, Rockets, or Stars fan. Sorry don't know much about Baseball.:o

I just enjoy having all of the teams to watch. I spend more time watching college football then anything else. NFL bores me most of the time and the Cowboys are doing terrible. Hope they bring Jimmy Johnson back to get another couple of super bowl rings!! Sorry it took me so long to respond. I've been a little busy with the holidays. So what's the traditional Christmas dinner in Australia??? I should have the TC3 by mid January, along with a new modified MT12. I won't be giving up on the OB4, it will just move into a secondary position. So did you say you were going to run with the big boys next season?? Good for you. Everyone has to make the change in order to improve their skills..... Oh well, talk at you again soon.

Have you heard anything about this OFNA LD3? Apparently it's a bit like the NTC3. Shaft drive etc.
Bring back Aikman, Moose, and what was that Tight End's name, Novacheck (poor spelling I know:o ) Now they were Cowboys.

Nope it does not fit. Cause its for a Standard shaft. This mugen engine is a Sg shaft or p Shaft. The flywheel wont even go on the shaft. I know i need a diff flywheel and clutch nut. But cant find any that ofna makes for them. Or can i use any clutch? Cause i find it to be cheaper then just getting the flywheel and nut. Since ill have back up shoes. I live in Texas and the only source for parts is nitrohouse. There prices are good and there delivery takes 4-5 days. I've placed about 4 orders through them over the last 8 months and they haven't missed a beat. They carry the full line of OB4 parts. The manual is incorrect on several part numbers, so trust the folks at nitrohouse since they know what they are talking about. I run the top of the line Airtronics servo for steering on the front of the car w/o crossing to digital servos. It works great with the new low budget Airtronics MX3 FM radio, but I still run the standard airtronic stock servo on the throttle control. As for breaking gears, are you breaking or stripping them? Also, are we talking about gears in the drive system or in the servo's. If you are breaking them in the drive system, I assume it is from an impact of some sort...but if you are stripping them, you might have some parts out of alignment or some major tweaks causing the problems. Other problems might be diff's not operating properly or you might have some dirty bearings that have locked up. Just my two cents based on my own experiences with the. I haven't had any problems with the servo's, but have had multiple belt/gear issues. I seem to have worked through them now...

Hi guys,
I'me thinking of buying a second-hand NOB4 once I sell my HPI Pro2 and was wondering what you guys think of them.
Are there many problems with them? ie quality issues, handling probs etc?
The car I am thinking of buying, won the B final in the UK rubber nationals last year. It has...
Nitro OB4 w/ STS MT.12 engine (brand new, just run-in)
STS MT12 exhaust system
Loads of alloy and graphite hop-ups,
Kiel Metal gear servo,
std acoms throttle servo,
Brand new thunder tiger starter box,
Brand new TTR glowstarter,
3 set of rubber tyres , 1 brand new set of foams.
2 matched Team Orion batts for starter,
2 GTP bodyshells,
1 Trick bits 1100mAh rx pack.
He's asking £250 ($375) for the lot which seems a pretty good deal to me.
What do ya think? Thanks....

01-19-2003, 12:24 PM
If your're interested, I can offer you a similar deal for less. Say $325USD??
The car is a fully hopped-up OB4 sold formerly belonging to an OFNA Team driver.
rccarkilla
01-20-2003, 10:27 AM
Hmmm, I would be interested, but I live in the UK, lol. If I were to buy your car, it'd mean shipping it over the pond (very costly) and it's take for ever to get here most likely. The only way I could see it being worth my while would be if your car was $300, as this would allow me to pay for shipping and cover the import taxes.
The car I might be buying has been heavily modified apparently. The belt has been swapped from the right side of the chassis to the left, and there is every alloy hop-up fitted available. He also says there are only 2 examples of that spec car in the UK (nice bragging point, lol).
Have you got any pictures of your car? I'd be happy to consider your car, as I've still got my eyes open for good deals ;)

Devin
01-29-2003, 10:22 AM
Personally, I didn't like the ball difs that were an option from Ofna. They were pretty much the ones that they use on their electric cars and it didn't work well with my nitro. I say if you have a large course with long sweepers a solid locked rear dif (or gear dif with thick oil) and a one way would work very well. You need good traction on the track too and you probably will be running foams too. Good luck

man...this thread is slow. I know it's winter and not too many people are racing right now but I was wondering if anyone had any new ideas or equipment that they were running on their OB4. I personally had to buy a new chassis as mine was bent about 6 mm in the rear as it bent at the midshaft and things were starting to bind. Now the car rolls nice and smooth now. Need to break in my new piston/sleeve so I can start racing when the weather gets warmer. :) Where are you OB4 guys! Eric P...you still around here?

I got an OB4 nitro off my friend recently. He only ran it 4 times and lost interest in nitro cars.
I had to rebuild the whole car since my friend doesn't know what he was doing and the whole car was binding and etc..
I notice the stock shock shafts are really short so I changed to longer one.
Does Ofna sell a set of tuned spring kits?? So far I put some heavy Congo yellow springs in the front and Serpent red in the rear. The car works pretty good with diff and foam tires. Just a lot of chassis roll. Stock sway bars are junk and I plan to change the blade to some higher quality ones instead of those piano wires.

Hi Guys,
I can see there is some excitement on how the LD3 will come out. I noticed that the suspension on the LD3 is the same as the Nitro OB4_PRO/RTR Hopefully this will mean we might get better local parts support.
The 2002 Nitro Sedan Season was very good for me and my NOB4-PRO. Took a couple of 1st and 2nd place finished in the local parking lot wars. I'm in the off-season mode if there is ever one in Texas. Until then I'm at the pond with the R/C boat dudes -at least until the weather becomes a little less hostile…
The LD3 is supposed to be available "soon"…I'm still waiting. Meanwhile the deals on brand new OB4-PRO's are just incredible! you can still get a winning chassis for less that $240.00 (with all the trimmings included).
Good Luck and Kick some RC-Car Butt!

Nitro is still on hold up here in the east.. Hopefully at the beginning of march I can break in the new piston and sleeve on my Trinity Picco and then go racing... I'm having a good time with carpet racing though.
YR4Dude
02-25-2003, 03:57 PM
Y'know Eric, you're absolutely right!!! The LD3 should bring better parts support to the OB4 at least in the way of suspension. Hopefully there will be lower priced Delrin arms as a result of this. The new LD3 will develop new rear suspension hubs that will fit 30mm tires better and still will be compatible with the OB4!! So long as OFNA or HONG NOR maintains support of the car in belts and pulleys, the OB4 is still a good parking lot racer. (Now I regret selling my OB4)
However guys(anyone new to OB4 interested in one) make sure to get a later version OB4. IF it is new in the box, make sure it comes with the large Red, two container carrying case. This is the model that comes with the revised belt configuration and the clutch-type two-speed(a $100 value). Don't get the one that comes with the purple case. This is the earlier version which could cost you another $200 just to bring it up to date.
Hey Eric - can your Force 12 Mod tutorial be applied to other stock 3 port motors?
EMT^Racer
02-25-2003, 10:59 PM
how much rpm does the stock force engine have? the ofna site says 38000.... i always thought it was around 28000.
also, i remember an article in a mag advertising that it can do something like 56mph. i know that realistically the car will struggle to do that, but anyways, im using 45t/41t spurs and 14t/18t pinions. would it be worth changing the pinions to 16t/20t???
one more thing, do u guys recommend getting a new pipe? i was thinking of either a cvec, rb polished (the one for the x12) or a novarossi pipe.
Devin
02-26-2003, 01:30 PM
The LD3....just saw pics of it in Xtreme RC cars. It looks good, I wish them best of luck. I think if I got a new car than it would be a Serpent 705, I can just get parts so much easier. The ob4 is a good car though so i'll stick with it for this season. We'll see what happens next year.
Eric Perez
02-26-2003, 11:01 PM
The LD3 - It sure looks like a NTC3 spin off... I'm anxious to see it on a race-track!
On the question of what pipe to use for the Force12. I'm running a Nova/Mega .12 C1 pipe that came with the Serpent Impact with the side exhaust engine. Good all around pipe makes the engine happy at all points around the track. Keep in mind the 4-tooth split 2-speed helps alot in that department ;)
The short stock Ofna pipe is good for pulling RPMS on big open tracks. I loved how the force 12 traded punches with the Mugens on the straightaway.
Never count out the Associated pipe for the RC10GT-RTR it packs a mean punch.
Don't go with pipes with more than 2-chambers if you want your engine to breath. If noise is a concern then the 3-chamber pipes are worth taking a look.
Make sure to buy pipes that you know work. Sometimes the no-name brand tripple chrome-plated pipes are no better than stock.
Sometimes the gearing needs to be changed to take full advatage of a tuned pipe change.
Hope this helps

are the alum a arms worth it or should i just stick to plastic?
YR4Dude
03-05-2003, 10:52 AM
Unknown Member: Don't get the alum. arms. They'll just get bent and throw off your suspension set-up. If you want to spend money on better suspension arms, take a look at the Delrin ones from Nitrohouse. They're very pricey but worth it.
If you're looking to prevent breakage with your suspension up front then you may want to consult with Devin's double bumper set-up. I remember the picture from the HPI forum but I don't think there is one in this forum since we moved from there.
Devin: could you please post another picture of your bumper set-up?
In regards to the car pulling to one side, check your alignment and also check to see if your right side bearings are not binding. Also check and see if your bottoming out your chassis in the rear end on accelaration. If it is bottoming out, you'll need to either stiffen the rear or add more ride height.

YR4Dude
03-05-2003, 02:12 PM
You'll find the arms in the general parts list for the OB4. Why they did not put it in the options list, I don't know.
By checking your alignment, is exactly what I mean. Check camber on front and rear, check toe-in /toe-out for front and rear and most importantly, check droop for front and rear. One thing to check that is trick with these pillow ball cars is to check proper track width (distance of wheel from centerline). This is something that is adjustable on these cars that normal C-hub cars don't have. You don'e want your right side to be out further than your left side or vice versa.
Get yourself a good alignment board and a simple camber gauge.
Other systems are available and does a better job but they're expensive. You could do the same with the simple items I mentioned and some careful time and patience.

If you are breaking arms on the front, make sure you fix your bumper. Y is right in that category. I took a super nitro rs4 foam bumper and trimmed it to the edge of the rims on either side. Mounted it to the wide pro bumper plate for the OB4. Go to your local hardware store to buy fasteners and large washers to affix it to the plate. I have yet to break any arms since making the change on my OB4. I will post a picture later, as I do not have it available at my office....Good luck.

I will sum up what I have done with it. Well I have my ob4 for about a year now. I bought it I broke in the engine and then I went to the track for my first race. The tires I had weren't good at all, so I changed the tires to some ellegi rubber tires. Then as I was trying to found out about the ob4 in the net I found the best site Eric's site. Then from there I began learning more about setups and about the ob4's pros and bads. So I changed my rear diff to a ball diff I lube my front gear diff I used 2.5 degress toe out in front 1.5 degree toe in the rear I use the ofna stiff springs with 35wt oil in the front and the ofna white spring and 25 oil in the rear I didn’t take off the roll bars my right height is less in the rear so can keep the rear end better I have minimum caster. At the begging the ball diff worked fine and I won one of the biggest races in my town but after some time when I was accelerating the ball diff moved freely. What do you think about the front solid axle diff would help handling? Also during the race I control the car because when I accelerate the 2 speed shift quickly and the car spins and also even when the 2 speed doesn't shift again the car spins. I can't get the Clutch Type 2-Speed in Cyprus is there another way. Can I use the tg10 Clutch Type 2-Speed? And the last question can the ob4 cooperate with the serpent 705 ntc3s mtx 3.
Thank you very much!!!!!! Hve a nice day!!!

hey didrace maybe you need to tighten the screw that is inside of the axle of the ball diff, don't tight it too much just enough for the axle not to lock up...also about the locked front i havent tried that but i like the way my car handles with a locked diff in the back and one way in the front. The only bad thing about front one way is that the back wheels only brake. Good Luck

Solid axle on the front end works great! However, you must run a free moving diff in the back.;)
If you look at all the Yokomo RTRs they come with a solid axle front and a free moving diff in the rear. Simply done for one reason, to make it easier for the newbies to drive.
Also one of the Team Associated drivers run the same set-up for his TC3 electric with great success.
So if you're looking for controlability and steerability without the twitchyness of a front oneway, a solid axle front is the way to go.

Thanks!

Last year I stuck with gear difs both in the front and back.. I did buy the ball difs but that pretty much sucked for me. I converted the rear ball dif into a locked dif and i'm going to try a front one way. Im having a great time with a one way in my Xray EVO II so I want to try it on my ofna. 1/8th scales use this combo...why not try it?
YR4Dude

What I meant by a free moving diff is a ball diff that is set loose but does not slip. Or a gear diff with light oil inside. Either diff moves freely but does not slip.
Devin, make sure you get a Lola body before you try the oneway and locked diff. As you know the 1/8 uses that set-up also but with Can-am style bodies. I run a Lola on my Yokomo GT4-R with that same combination and it runs great!! One of the OFNA team guys did it with their OB4 and his was hooked up running 26mm tires in the back!!! My Yokomo has to run 32mm just to do the same.

So you don't think the locked rear with a front one way would work well with a Stratus race body? Many of my racers around here do not let people run the Lola body style. You don't think the stratus would give enough down force?

Typically the solid axle & oneway setup is run in 1/8 with CanAm style bodies. There have been instances where the 1/8s ran touring style bodies but not with great success. So basically the same would be true in 1/10.
Even when running the Lola bodies, people would tack on an extra strip of lexan at the rear of the body to gain more necessary rearend downforce.
Honestly speaking, I think the Stratus body is a bit overrated. I wouldn't trust the solid axle set-up with that body. I would insist on at least running a diff that's on the tight side so that there is at least some room for diff action in the rear.
However, if you insist on running a solid axle with a touring style body, you should consider the Protoform Opel. The rear wing on that body is HUGE.

Thanks for the advice.. I run really thick gear dif grease in my rear dif so unloading due to surface traction is limited. I might play with it anyway as it will be interesting to see how it works...i most likely will not race that combo.

Well i think for putting all the hop up parts for my ob4. Is it worth it or it is better to buy a new car such as the serprnt 705 ntc3 etc. Is the ob4 a car that can cooparade with all the other cars

Is an Ofna OB4 nitro strong enough to hold an powerfull engine like an RB or an novarossi (a competition engine)?
Or the belts, gears,... strong enough to hold the power?

Alot of people puts RB and Novarossi engines on their ob-4. I onced put a big block 15 on my ob-4, it was hauling ass but I only used it on the street just to race with my cousins.

I recently installed a front one way and i just tried it out. I also changed the brake disk with the optional brake disk (the carbon one i think).
I know i don't have any brakes any more on the front wheels but if i brake hard the back of the car brakes out. Sometimes the back of the car spins 90 to 180 degree. Is this because i just brake on the rear wheels or what could be the reason? (I didn't have this before.)
UNKNOWM MEMBER
03-23-2003, 04:09 PM
that is a con about one ways....try to adjust the brake so it hits it very lightly or u can try clicking the brakes when u want to stop...When im at the track i never use brakes.
Devin
03-25-2003, 03:22 PM
If you have exp on your radio, try adjusting the brake down to 60-65% max, than you'll not be slamming on the brake and causing your rear end to swing out.
Devin

What are your guys setups for outdoor asphalt racing. I run foam tires approx 60mm high. Im going to start running about a 5-6mm ride height and adjust from there. It's going to take a while to get used to nitro again from racing indoors on carpet with an xray all winter.

Who are you talking to? My ob4 is still getting setup. The track I have run on so far has been crappy so I really need to go a high surface track....when that happens the OB4 likes it stiff! Double purple/purple foams and stiffer springs all around.

I heard the Ld3 is going to replace the ob4 or already has are we still going to be able to get parts.
The reason I am asking is because I got a Ob4 for free in alright condition but it needs alot of parts so I was hoping I would still be able to get them. I also need to find a force 12 to replace the one the previous owner broke can anyone point me in the direction of where to get one?

I never measured the speed but it goes fast. It depends on the gearing and the track.
I can keep up with a serpent impulse or 750 if they gave a normal engine. If they use a turbo or some sort of tuned engine then they or faster (sometimes a lot faster).
