I brought my T3 to practice at the track a week ago and someone turned on their radio while I was on the straight, ran into the wall, and a BL xxx-4 ran into me instantly and he broke multiple front peices while I drove away. hehe

Also he blamed me for not telling him I was stuck on the straight and said those crashes can get spendy while holding his $400 radio, and $800+ g+ xxx-4.

Everybody should take responsablity for their own crashes and damages to their cars. I had a GS Strom buggy run into the pit wall and smashed into the right rear strut of my HPI NMT. His car went air born and cart-wheeled into my face. It hurt a lot but I returned his car to him and asked "Is this yours?". The guy asked if I was OK, and I told him I was fine. I had no grug on him, I just asked him to slow down on that corner because of the pit. Well with a little blood coming from the head and a bent shock shaft, every thing else was fine. I was lucky enough that he missed my fingers. If he had gotten those, the day would have ended for me. This R/C racing, sh*t happens, nothing really any one can do about it expect prepare/fix for it. Just don't ask the other guy to provide insruance for the damages.

T3 status: On a shelf, waiting for electronics to run it. Mainly used for keeping the other racers and noivces on their toes. And to get others to join the hobby (T3 is very dependable, not even broke a part yet!!!).

Sunday Race Report:

Racing was crap, but my day was otherwise good. First two races my batteries kept coming out for some reason, so I tightened down the screw down. I came back in the third qualifier to TQ and qualify first. I started out first in a-main and got in the first corner tangle and then dropped to last place, I couldnt catch up and ended up with 4'th.

Here are some pics

microrcdude

Ya, they are just the regular shocks with fuel tubing as limiters inside them. I'm not sure on the length of the limiters though. :)

OK all you T3 freaks, I would really appreciate your expertise with a problem I'm having. I have read through almost all of the T3 forums and I see nothing about this. I find it hard to believe I'm the only one that's had this problem. I love my brushless T3. I've owned and do own almost every electric rc vehicle known to man and it's by far the coolest. It seems to be the best of all worlds.......

Now the problem. It will not go straight. I've taken the front end apart like 3 times and cleaned everything. I bought a HS5645MG so there is plenty of centering torque (160 in/oz's). I've messed with toe and camber till I'm factory team anodized blue in the the face, but it still wanders left and right. Any suggestions would be GREATLY appreciated

pudder
01-20-2004, 02:44 PM
Well to do this there are a few things you must make sure:

-NO play at all in any of the front end parts (ballcups, bearings, servo, etc.
-all four tires must be mounted correctly and balanced
-truck equally balanced on both sides

I think one or two of these might apply here. I might be going into too small detail right now, I really have no idea. :)

treepete
01-20-2004, 02:59 PM
Ball cups and bearings huh. I'll check em all out again when I get home from work. Would that really make it wander left and right?

I wanted to get some opinions on gearing for a T3. I have a T3 for my wife and she wanted to get a bit more power (was running stock), so I put a 19t spec in it. She says she doesn't really feel much of a difference, so I figured I'd mess with the gearing a bit. Currently it's 87t spur, 20t pinion. Was thinking of going to 21 or 22t. What is a good gearing combo for a 19t spec on a BIG track?

In my T3, I currently run a Reedy Ti 11x2 with 17t/87t gearing and it works great. Going to try a Integy 10x3 with same gearing the next race.

I dont know man. I ran my 18 turn with like a 17 pinion, but just for bashing...

you can try a higher gearing like a 21tooth as long as the motor or ESC arent getting too hot.

Is the servo saver too loose?

Does it wander back and forth on the same drag or does it sometimes pull one way and other times pull the other way?

Lastly, don't some radios have a knob or setting for tweaking servo travel and centering? If your radio has that you can try checking that as a last resort.

treepete

Returning from a left turn it wanders left. Returning from a right turn it wanders right. Servo saver is actually pretty tight. I have an M8 and it's definitely not that. I'm going to replace all of the ball cups as soon as I get a chance. And the from wheel bearings. If that doesn't work I'm driving it off a clif and getting a T4! Thanks for the suggestions!

And the from wheel bearings.

How did that "from" get in there?????!!!

jdm3849
01-24-2004, 06:10 PM
With a servo that has that much torque it needs to be as tight as possible. I have around 133oz. and needed to use 2 pairs of pliers in order to get it tight enough.

I've been pretty preoccupied with school and other stuff latley, plus the weather hasnt been to great so I've bairly touched my RCs over the past few months- aw well, I'm waiting for my brushless anyways [being repaired].

I think I may sell my rustler though, and after that I may buy a novak ss system. We'll see though.

I could be running right now but poopy old hacker seems to be having some issues with repairs....

Rumor has it they've stopped making the sport/competitions and have started a new line, so repairs latley on the older models are takin a loooong time. :(

For the past couple of months (4-5) I have been racing my tc3 at my local track. I was always winning events in "novice" class and decided it was time to move up to stock. After getting my rear end handed to me I decided it was time to auctually start getting serious about racing and not just casual running.

Due to the fact that my diff's feel like they have sand paper instead of bearings (this has gotten worse over time) and there is a nice click sound comming from the front one every time it compleates a rotation I decided to rebuild the diffs and most other parts of the drivetrain.

I am going to replace the diffs (currently stock) with new ones but am in a delima as to which to get. Associated makes two kinds a heavy steel kind and a light plastic kind. If I am going to be racing stock (p2k) on a tight hightraction carpet which kind should I get? Is there another company that makes after market diffs that are better?

Any tips on general performance/maitnence are also welcomed.

Well my day shaped up to be pretty damn good.

I got a good night of sleep and raced sober. Qualified 3'rd in the a-main and finished 1'st place. :) I think I was 2 laps ahead of second place in the end. I missed every crash and pileup and never made any major mistakes myself. :)

That is a pretty general question. Tell us what you will be running on, or a specific tread/rim style you want to get and we could help you out a bit more. :)

-------

I've completed race day 1 so far, and will be heading to the track in a few minutes. I think I'm qualified 2'nd overall so far, only a few seconds behind first place. I've been playing with gearing a bit too and have found a ratio that provides lots of speed I need for the track layout I'm running on.

I had a great time racing this weekend, but despite a few problems in the last qualifier I ended up qualifying for 3'rd starting position in the a-main. I had a fairly good start, and mostly everyone crashed which allowed me to get ahead. I held first place throughout the race, and that's what I took home. :)
BTW: for my races I was running matched GP 3300's with Novak Atom ESC, JR XR3, Hitec 625 servo, and Fantom 404 motor.

I also got a Novak SS Brushless system and tried it out in my T3. The thing flies! In the morning practice I did manage to crash my truck pretty hard with the bl system, and broke an a-arm and bent a hingepin.

Hi this is my first post, but dont consider me any type of "newbie" to RC. i have a factory team t3, i got it from a guy about 9 months ago. i have never had any problems until now. No matter how tight the 2 screws are on the front mount, it ALWAYS ends up (literally, my body will end up sticking straight up in the air) only connected to the body itself, not the car. any tips on how to figure out what to do to fix this problem or to aleast figure out what is going on?

Thanks,
Zach

pudder
03-08-2004, 05:37 PM
Are you talking about your front body mount to the front bulkhead screws? Your bulkhead is probably stripped, you can try to put some CA glue in the hole and then it might thread itself okay, but if not you will have to buy a new bulkhead.

pudder
03-09-2004, 06:33 PM
I've already tried the B3 body on T3 thing, and it doesnt work because of the longer T3 chassis. To make it fit you'd have to hack up the body. As well, the T3's rear shock tower is higher up than a buggies. You can really only use a T3 body on the T3.

Since it is Easter today and all, racing was yesterday so I went. I raced alright and had a lot of fun. I was gaining on first place constantly in the main, but a few errors on my part cost me to fall back to third, nevertheless the day went great.

How do you like it overall? Is it everything you thought brushless would be?

pudder
04-12-2004, 06:40 PM
I knew from the start than the Novak SS isn't as extreme as some of the other BL systems out there, but for the price, performance, and durability I love it! Performance is great, good torque and speed, and runtimes aren't that bad either. I haven't bothered to time runtimes, so I'm not sure how long batts last. The thing I love the most about the system is that there is virtually no maitanence. You can run pack after pack after pack and there is no performance drop, your motor always runs at a good temp, and you don't have to spend money on brushes, spring, and comm cuts like you would with a brushed motor. It is the ultimate for bashing.

I should be doing a review on my web site soon, I'll be sure to post a link. :)

Pudder: Would you say the novak BL is faster/has more torque than a good mod? What pinion are you using? What kind of bats?

pudder
04-14-2004, 06:46 PM
Well, if it helps, RCCA described the Novak SS BL with 5800 motor similar to a Reedy Krypton with GT7. My experience, I'd say its how they say it is. There are big advantages though, the performance is still smooth, you dont have to change brushes or cut comm, or clean the motor. Also, you have more gearing options because the motor is more effecient. You get good runtimes, much better than a mod motor. I just used about 1 tooth down from the pinion I was running when I ran it in my T3, but that was on a tight carpet track. I run 15/87 in my Stampede, which is about 2 teeth lower than running a stock motor.

Fast T3
04-19-2004, 10:22 AM
oh i can help you on that one you MIGHT be able to keep your gearing the same but in most cases you might have to gear down a little bit 1 tooth or so usally they are great tires and your truck dosn't scrape the chassie on the ground when you bottom out

pudder
04-19-2004, 10:44 AM
Well, judging by the much larger diameter of the Mashers, I'd try gearing down about 3 teeth to start out with. Just keep an eye on your motors temperature, as well as the performance.

Fast T3
04-19-2004, 11:27 AM
i hear that preload does NOT affect my spring stiffness is this true
BTW i have Masher 2000's and you don't need to go down 3 teeth only 1 or none i ran my T3 with masher 2000's on a tight race tack with the same gearing as i run with dirt hawgs or an other tire for that matter and it was only a little hotter but then again i am 1 tooth lower than i should be in the book so you never know you really just gatta go with what feels good to you and test all your gearing opions 12-20 teeth with a 87 spur and 14-22 with a 83/84 don't know which is right and 12-18 with a 90 spur

I still strongly reccoment gearing down about 3 teeth for the tires. Its better to start lower and work your way up than risking overheating your motor.

Just to let you know, your motor is too hot when you burn your finger on it in under 3-5 seconds.

I believe the question of controlling bottom out is more a matter of shock oil weight than spring tension. The oil controls how quickly the shock compresses. Spring tension controls how quickly it uncompresses. Sure, spring tension has some affect on shock compression, but really you are relying on the oil.

However, I don't think there is a way to completely eliminate bottoming out with the standard equipment and still maintain any rear bite at all on a dirt track. Not to mention, the stronger the springs the more "bouncy" your landings can be. And bouncing is no way to keep your tires glued to the dirt.

I don't claim to be an expert so feel free to correct me if you think I am wrong.

I have found that the stiffer the spring, the higher, or less droop, the car has. But I hate having super high ground clearance, it makes the truck handle like ****. If you get a good suspension setup going, you can run with green springs. My reccomendations are to run green springs all the way around, with 40wt oil all around. The green springs give a nice responsive ride, and the 40 wt oil gives plenty damping for large jumps. I race offroad and run green springs with 30 wt oil and that is good for some decent jumps.

Fast T3
04-20-2004, 08:54 PM
hey i run 40wt oil and i have green springs. does pre load make your truck more bouncy over small bumps?

Fast T3
04-20-2004, 09:18 PM
ok this is why i am asking all these dumb questions about pre load

go to http://www.rc10.com/basicshub/setuphelp/setuphelpt3/setuphelpt3.htm click on distance from spring cap [or something like that] under front shocks and read it now the biggest question is. is this true? is it true that pre load does not change your spring rate?

pudder
04-20-2004, 10:03 PM
It has no effect on spring rate, but it does adjust ride height.

jdm3849
04-20-2004, 10:09 PM
It actually will affect the rate if used beyond the point where the suspension maxes out.

Racing is about to start up here again for the offroad season.

Since carpet racing was long done, I dug out my T3 the other day and gave it a good cleaning, setup the truck for offroad, and gave it a good once over look.

Racing will be starting up in just under 2 weeks here. Hopefully I'll have some pictures soon. I plan on racing in the modified class with my Novak SS5800 BL.

First race of the 2004 offroad season was today. I didn't have my B3 going so I used my T3. I bought some Pro-Line Lug Nut M2's for the rear and gave them a try. They hook up really good on the track, and my truck ran pretty good all day except for with one battery pack, but I need to change out the connectors. I had problems with gearing, and had to run 15/87 all day, which was overgeared, another reason why I like running my B3 with mod motors...

I should have some pictures later.

No, I didn't win. I probably would have taken second place if I hadn't had dropped out of the race due to glitching (most likely caused by a broken connector). I think I will only race stock with my T3 since its too much of a bother to gear it for modified, plus I'd rather rocket around the track in my B3. :D

pudder
07-05-2004, 12:27 PM
Check all of your ballcups and make sure they aren't worn at all, that can develop some slop. Also, make sure your servo saver is not too loose which can lead to some steering problems. Another thing to check is the bearings/bushings in the steering components.

dalejrfan8

You could try replacing the servo case if it is worn out at the top where the shaft comes out. Otherwise there isnt much else besides getting a better servo.

The 19 was better than the 20 because it accelerated faster and the top speed was still decent. You won't notice much, if any of a top speed difference. I would still stick with the 18 on tight tracks but if the track is fast go with the 19. I would never race with the 20. The acceleration isn't fast enough for racing. dalejrfan8

It would cost a lot more money and there is no room to go up a tooth in the gearbox because everything is so close. If change an internal gear it will throw your gear ratios way off and you will most likely need to buy a new pinion and spur to fix it.

I am with Fast T3 why would you want a 2 speed on an off road car? Unless you have half of a track that is full throttle and half is a tight turning slow speed section. I don't really see an advantage in having a 2 speed. But it is your truck so more power to you. Make it work and beat your competition with it.

I've heard of people using 2 speeds, and unless you have a brushless motor, its not really going to help you a lot. Electric motors don't have the high rpm torque that gas engines have for second gear, and they also increase rotating mass.

heres a good one for you to figure out:

which is better onroad: foams or street treads??

area: parking lot
surface: freshly blacktop

i have both foams AND street treads
just wondering.

pudder
08-25-2004, 01:02 PM
Use street treads. Foam tires get chewed up real easy on asphalt, and they also get dust on them which makes them slippery. Don't wreck your foams, use rubbers.

Make sure your gearing isnt too high --81 spurs are usually used in B3's.

i have used a 81 in my truck, aslong as you use a small pinion you are ok, i think i ended up doing 17 or 17/81.

The 2004/2005 Indoor Carpet racing season has started in Winnipeg, and I raced my T3 on Sunday. I got to use my new GP 3300's and I was going to buy a Fantom tuned Epic Binary 2 Pro motor, but they didnt have them in stock yet so I borrowed a like-new Fantom 404 and ripped up the track. I Tq'd and placed 1'st in the main.

Awesome job pudder!

I am rebuilding my T3 during the cold months. Is there anything you guys suggest that I replace. I plan on replacing the ball bearings, shock seals and wheels/tires.
Anything else?

pudder
11-23-2004, 03:05 PM
Other things to think about are suspension components, they get worn out after time too. Check them for play. Also a diff rebuild may be needed? I dont know when you last did one.

I know I am going to get a new front bulkhead, front and rear suspension arms and front and rear axle carriers. I have already done shock seals, shafts, and differential rebuilds. Racing carpet track I want to have a really tight truck, and from how it is right now it will do me good in the season. :D

I just put on new suspension arms and did a rebuild of the diff last week. Guess I should have mentioned that. Sorry.

I have broken my front bulkhead 3 or 4 times. I don't know why.

when i had my FTT3, the part i broke the most was the top brace, now that i have the RTR version(used), im hoping that wont hapen any more :)

pudder
11-24-2004, 06:15 PM
The part I've broken most is the front body mount because I race indoor and some of those hits can be pretty hard... I did find out I broke a top plate a little while ago but it was only on one side anyways. I just put the Racers Edge Aluminum brace on my T3 now.

This (http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXCZM9&P=7) fits the T3, right? I think I will pick up a set of these, and a Hitech 645 and a larger (? that would give more acc. right?) spur gear. It's been sitting on it's stand for about a year since I stripped the servo's gears, and it doesn't like traxxas servos, so maybe this christmas is revival time for it.

dalejrfan8
12-01-2004, 07:18 AM
The hitec 645 might be a little slow. I have one in my T3 and it is sluggish. Yes those tires will fit your T3.

pudder
12-01-2004, 09:35 AM
Get the 625. I have 2 of them and use them for racing too.

Thanks man, found it on Tower, so I think that will end up as part of my Christmas present.

Oh yea, what is good gearing for a Monsters of Touring 13x2 motor with those new bigger tires, setup for bashing, grass, gravel, and using 1500/1700 mAh ni-cd's?

And, should I keep on using the hard springs from AE, or switch back to the softer silver spring (this is the rear, front still has silver)?

pudder
12-01-2004, 02:28 PM
Why are you running such hard springs? You would get improve your trucks handling a lot by using green springs. As long as you have the right piston and oil combo you can get shocks with green springs to handle almost everything.

I would try gearing the motor around 15 for starters. See how it is from there.

punkrockracer
12-01-2004, 07:25 PM
I wanted it to sit tall above the grass, and at the time, I was trying to jump some pretty hefty jumps. I think I will invest in a spring kit, along with the new servo, tires, and a couple of different sized pinions and spurs.

microrcdude
12-01-2004, 11:04 PM
If you want ti to be tall, get the Masher 2K's by proline. They are the tallest tires that fit the T3 without modifications. Gearing may need to be ajusted though.

punkrockracer
12-02-2004, 12:22 PM
Na, that would take away too much acceleration, and I don't need the tires to be that aggressive. After I get the new Team Orion tires, I imagine that I will have enough clearance and can get a little softer springs all around.

Right now I just want to get the new servo in so that I can use it. It's been a year or more since it has ran due to stripping the servo riding on road with it.

So this Christmas will be the resurection of all my RC's...finally put in the new radio on the E-MAXX, got the spur replaced and the engine tuned on the T-Maxx, and now to work on the T3.

12-08-2004, 09:20 AM
The thing is the T3 was meant for racing, and with Factory Team upgrades there wasn't much else that really needed to be improved. That was years ago too remember. Now it seems that just about every vehicle these days has a full lineup of aftermarket parts from different companies!
---------------------------------------------

After racing in the truck class at the local carpet track for 4 years, I'm deciding its time to move on to something a bit more challenging with a bit more competition. I'm asking for a Corally RDX Touring Car for Christmas. It will give me something to work on and since the truck class has been kinda poor turnout so far this year it would be nice to get some more excitement happening. :) I'm sure I'll still race my T3 once in a while, but I'll probably move my focus onto touring car.

Seeing that almost makes me want to delve into on-road. Then I remember the closest road to me is a main high-way, and that the closest track is more than an hour away. Dang I hate where I live!

Oh yea, a pair of Fusion Batteries, the club pack w/ Deans installed, and a bag of Deans connectors has been added to my wish list.

Ya, the closest paved road to me is the highway too, but if I had a car like that, odds would be I wouldnt drive it on just any paved surface. I have a Tamiya M03L for that. :)

I would love to race on road cars, the only problem is I have no where to practice. There is a track about half an hour away, but that is a long way to go if I want to practice 2-3 days a week and race. My car would get run over on my street because people fly on it.

pudder
12-09-2004, 09:16 AM
My track is half an hour away too. But since I live outside of the city I'm used to longer drives. So basically the only time I have on track with my onroad vehicles is pre-race practice lol other than the races.

Now that I think about it it isn't that far away but for a coulpe days a week that is alot.
